Maryland Win Season Opener
Maryland 20, Michigan State 9
In the season opener for both teams, UMD hosted Michigan State yesterday. The game began with two turnovers in a row, or maybe three depending on how you count. On Michigan State's first play, their running back fumbled the ball, which was recovered momentarily by a Terrapin defender. His posession didn't last long, as he fumled it after only a couple of steps, and Michigan State regianed posession. Now with a first and ten but ten yards further back, Michigan State's QB threw a pass over the middle that was picked off. The Terps took advantage and stuffed it in for the TD to take the early lead. Maryland never looked back, despite a safety that made the score 10-2 at one point in the first half.
Someone had greased the balls before the game, because fumbles came fast and furious over the course of the contest. Only a few were lost to the other team, but no one could hold onto the thing. The e-mailed recap lists 'turnovers for' at 4 for UMD and 1 for MSU, yet lists 'interceptions for' at 0 for UMD and 2 for MSU. I am confused what they mean by 'turnovers for,' so I'm not sure who in the end gave up the ball more. I'm pretty sure it was UMD leading in what I would call the 'take-aways' category, because this was the key to the game.
Down in the first half, MSU put together a long, efficient drive towards the Maryland endzone. The Terps had no answer for the mix of run and pass that MSU used to work their way into the red zone. On third and goal, however, and ill-advised pass made across the field after the QB had rolled left, ended up being picked by the UMD safety, and the Spartans came away with no points. This was really the turning point of the game. MSU never put together another drive quite as effective, and the Terps were able to use the clock to their advantage through the second half.
PS I hate, absolutely hate, the layout and categories of the EA emailed stats. I need to remember to jot down the important info and stats after the game as I usually have, such as pass completions and punt average. I just didn't think aobut it this time with the emailed stats. But these emails are a joke; 'Scrambles?' 'Audibles Called?' Pretty clear these are more about fighting the cheese than giving me a box score that looks like football stats.

Ooh, I had forgotten about that! 3rd and 28 or something, an incomplete pass, and nice easy first down thanks to the penalty, and the drive kept going! That was huge, that and the pick in the endzone were the key plays I thought.nyisles16 wrote:Zepp - great game... I think ya paid off the refs though on that roughing the passer call![]()
that & my 4 trips inside the red zone with no points
I am on now and would like to get in a couple of games tonight if possible.

Maryland Goes to 2-0 With Road Win
The Maryland Terrapins came away from Heinz Field with a tough fought road victory over the University of Pittsburgh last night in their second game of the season. The 42-24 win behind a 180yd, 2TD rushing performance by HB#44 Lance Ball moved Maryland to 2-0 on the season.
The game started slowly, with the two teams trading punts and fighting for field position through the first quarter. It took a mistake for the ice to be broken, as Pitt.'s QB #3 Tyler Palko made a poor pitch on an option play that could not be handled by the running back. UMD's LB #55 Trey Covington picked up the pigskin and rumbled the 40yds for the score.
Pittsburgh needed only 20 sec. to reply, as they struck back with a 76yd run from FB #31 Conredge Collins. The teams traded TDs again, UMD's QB #14 Hollenbach hitting WR# 17 Oquendo for a 46yd score, and Pitt's Palko hitting HB #34 LaRod Stephens-Howling out of the backfield for a 78yd TD with only 1:45 left in the half. Maryland was able to eek out a 7pt lead before the break with a 62yd TD pass from Hollenbach to WR#84 Isaiah Williams, making the score at the half 21-14 in favor of visiting Maryland.
The second half continued the scoring extravaganza, but the first score of the half turned out to be a bit of a momentum swing. Pitt came out of the halftime break swinging for the fences, and a nifty play broke the UMD defense open for what looked to be another long scoring play. But UMD's FS (can't remember exactly who) was able to keep the angle and chase the streaking receiver down, pushing him out of bounds just at the 1yd line. UMD's defense stepped up and put together a brilliant goal line stand that forced Pitt to settle for the field goal, making the score 21-17 UMD. The rest of the 3rd quarter saw more big plays, a 57yd TD run from Ball, the MD HB, followed by an 81yd TD pass from Palko to WR#87 Marcel Pestano, ending the quarter with the score 28-24 MD.
In the final stanza UMD finally made some separation between themselves and the hosts, scoring on one long, 12 play drive that ended with a 1yd run from #44 Ball, and capping the scoring with 2:24 left on a 31yd TD pass from Hollenbach to #84 Williams. Pitt was unable to score in the 4th quarter, and the Terps were relieved to escape Heinz with the victory.
Hollenbach was efficient, throwing 11 for 18 for 230yds and 3TDs and 2INTs. HB #44 Ball was the player of the game with 180yds on 20 carries, including 2TDs. WR#84 had 121yds on 3 receptions, and also scored 2TDs. Meanwhile SS#12 Marcus Wimbush recorded 2 INTs.
For Pitt, QB #3 Palko went 12 for 17 for 331yds, 2TDs, and 2INTs. FB#31 Conredge was the leading rusher for Pitt, gaining 84yds on 4 carries with 1TD. HB #34 Stephens-Howling was held to just 8yds on 4 carries, though he did have 110yds on 4 receptions out of the backfield.

Great game, Vader. The final score was much further apart than the game felt throughout. Only at the end, after that 12 play drive, did I have any real confidence I could win. Every time I took a lead, you just struck right back. That bad option pitch turned out to be key, as that defensive TD was massive. And that tackle at the one was GIGANTIC, I'm so glad I tried hard with that instead of giving up on the play! Who knew I could stop you with the goal line stand, and then I was sure I would get a roughing the kicker to give you 3 more chances!
Wow, heck of a game. We must get more games in with a mix of different teams, we seem to match up very well. Good luck the rest of the way with your Panthers!
