Teal wrote:So, question: how does the data, text, calls work without being under contract to one of these entities? Is it just pay as you go, what? And is it cheaper in the long run, about the same, or more expensive?
Everything stays the same. Put your SIM card in and go. Slight chance you may need to go to at&t to get a SIM card that fits (few difference sizes) but they can do that for you no problem.
This is the advantage of at&t and t-mobile in the states as they are gsm providers so they work seamlessly with unlocked phones. Sprint and Verizon only work w a few phones that are unlocked.
Anyone with Verizon here?? I have been with AT&T for years but for some reason my data seems to be burning up way faster than normal and its pissing me off. I have a 5 GB plan that I have never come close to using (usually use like 3.5/month) up. This past month I barely made it with the same surfing habits as usual. I have a 25% discount with AT&T with my minor league baseball alumni membership but I would get 21% with Verizon with a teacher discount. Verizon has their LARGE plan for 8GB/month but they are running a deal that gives you an extra 2GB/month making it 10 GB/month for $70/month. There is a $20/Month line access fee. Does that apply if I bring my current iPhone 7 plus with me...can I use my iphone 7 Plus with Verizon.

Have you considered Straight Talk? I've been on the service for a little over two years and couldn't be happier. I pay $46.60 per month and it comes with 5GB of LTE data and after the 5GB it gets throttled to 3G unlimited data. Everything else is unlimited and you can bring your own phone. For $55 per month you get 10GB of LTE data.
Straight Talk uses AT&T and T-Mobile, you choose which carrier you want. And no bullsh*t fees, just sales tax and the 911 tax.

Thanks for the info. AT&T has a Mobile Share Advantage plan that would add 1GB to my current plan and then do something similar to what you mentioned...once the 6GB is used they give you unlimited at a lower data rate. My plan would go up $5 with that deal. I might do it if this data burn continues. Would save me the hassle of switching providers.

Pretty sure you would have to get a new phone if you switched to Verizon as the iPhones are different for each carrier.

Yeah I figured that out after some research. Thanks.

How many phones does that cover, Rod? This might be where we go when we get past the stupid ATT monthly payment on these phones we have...

That's for one phone, not sure if ST has a family plan but my total cost is $46.60 per month on AT&T's network and you can use pretty much any GSM phone.
OnePlus 3T is releasing and people on the OnePlus forum who own the op3 are losing their minds over it. It does seem very odd to release another phone so quickly, especially when Carl said OnePlus would only make one phone per year. I am looking forward to next year. Note 8, s8, pixel xl or iPhone plus? I NEED quad HD. Full HD kinda sucks...
fletcher21 wrote: I NEED quad HD. Full HD kinda sucks...
Why, are you watching movies on the phone?
Occasionally, but even normal websites and viewing pics is worlds better on QHD. I always spent big money on a flagship. I gave a cheaper phone a chance. I'm happy with it, but not ecstatic. Next year will be an embarrassment of riches for phones. It'll be hard as hell to pick one.
Well the tradeoff for the higher resolution phones is greater energy consumption.
I use the Xfinity TV app. on my iPhone and iPad and don't see any difference between HD and non HD channels. The app. probably limits bandwidth on the streams.
For HBO Go or Hulu, I send the video to my big screen via either Chromecast or AppleTV. Obviously phone screen resolution doesn't matter then.
You might notice a difference for something like Netflix 4K, but then again, you might not.
But the Samsung phones (S7, Note7) rate well in other attributes like color gamut and brightness:

Incorrect. Like the cellular iPads...the iPhones are usable on each carrier. The key is going into Apple and getting a new Sim card and activating it on whatever carrier you choose. Apple uses their own sim cards...so that way they could make ONE model of iPhone to cover all carriers. The Sim card is then activated per the service you want to use.

You're lying if you can tell the diff between FHD and QHD. Give me a break. I can look at the Pixel and the S7 next to each other and they are basically indistinguishable. Come on Fletch.
iPhone 7 has two different modems this year for the first time in the product line's history.
In addition to the Qualcomm modems that they've been using, they are also using Intel modems as well.
However, the Intel modems do not support CDMA so if you're in a Verizon service area that still has CDMA base stations, you're going to need the Verizon SKU which supports CDMA as well as LTE.
Some claim the Qualcomm modems outperform the Intel modems too. Apple presumably is buying Intel modems for lower cost than the the Qualcomm baseband chipsets.
I can't speak for all phones, but viewing a photo on my wife's s7 compared to my op3 is very obvious. I might just prefer Samsungs color palette, but the s7 just looks way better to me. The icons look much more high def, and things just pop more.

Or maybe OnePlus doesn't exactly get the highest quality panels? Samsung makes the best phone screens on the market, if you prefer OLEDs. Everything else is second place really when it comes to brightness and viewing angles. Resolution doesn't mean sh*t at that size. That's my point.

Fair point. I guess deep down I'm a Samsung fanboy and shouldn't hide from it lol. Hopefully the note 8 doesn't blow up. I'm hoping that is my next phone. If OnePlus can make a phone that truly competes with Samsung for a budget price I'll stick with it, but I don't think it's possible to topple the note for anyone. Note is king of the hill in my limited knowledge having opinion.
fletcher21 wrote:Note is king of the hill in my limited knowledge having opinion.
This is true.
To be honest, only LG with their V series is even trying to compete w/ the Note. The V20 is a fantastic phone, but lacks the stylus that makes the Note so appealing. So if you want the best of the best, and you're cool w/ a slightly bigger form factor, the Note is where it's at. I just wonder if this exploding battery thing is really going to hurt them next year from a sale standpoint. The refusal of some idiots to return theirs makes me wonder. The Note cult is strong and I have a feeling next year, after the new one is released, things will be back to normal. And you can damn sure be confident nothing is going to happen to next year's model. Safest phone in history!

I'm actually hoping to capitalize on the exploding battery debacle. Samsung is never one to discount things at release, but maybe they'll include a free wireless charger or some other perk ro get people back
So my phone kept going more berserk. The insurance deductible was 100 bucks. Or I could just buy an Android go-phone for 30. So that's what I did. Not a cutting edge phone, but I really don't care about that. However, I've never had anything but WP. So, you Droid folks, hit me with essential and must have apps, if you'd be so kind...

First of all, it's ANDROID, not DROID. Verizon marketing at it's finest, lol. DROID was licensed from Spielberg to launch Android phones on Verizon...and everyone saw those commercials and it stuck. But it really only refers to Android phones manufactured by Motorola (and two HTCs) that launched on Verizon.
Second...no one can tell you what do download and use. It's up to you. The problem w/ bottom of the barrel go-phones is that they are going to be missing software and features that full fledged Android phones will have. So not sure what exactly you're missing, but there's a reason I didn't recommend one of those.
Scott, I really don't give a damn, man. About the technicalities or the other stuff. And I'm not a tech geek, so I'm just interested in essentials. I have a phone that can make calls and texts. Other than that, I require very little.

Here's the kinds of things I'm looking for. Is there a map app better than the native Google maps for turn by turn, that sort of thing. This thing is quite different from what I'm used to...
