Honestly this is typical Sony. Basically everyone of us is open to identity theft now and they take a week to let us in on it. Where are all the f***in defenders now. SDF lets hear you spin this f***. Maybe Kevin Butler can do a nice funny commercial.

Unreal this is not headline news on a big site.

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained," Seybold said.

"We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience."

I am f***ed. Thanks for telling us about this serious breach one week into the mess.

Isn't it awesome that the tone of the message is like, sorry we got your dinner order wrong we'll be right back out. Instead of we f***ed up, people have all your information and we didn't tell you about it right away exposing you to a greater chance of having your identity stolen.

I didn't think it was possible for Sony to be a bigger bunch of ass clowns but this is beyond anything I could imagine.

Typical Sony CYA, they have always operated that way. Fortunately for me I had recently removed my CC info from my Sony account and that card was recently shutdown but not because of this issue. But yeah everyone has a reason to be highly pissed at Sony.

following Sony's "zelous" actions several weeks back, that hacker group went on record, saying Sony is putting their pen*s in a beehive.

I believe this statement/prediction is proving to be true.

Bank of America will also offer protection for these matters.

Chase (the bank my card is under) would likely find a way not to. They are bad news.

Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is "demanding answers" about why Sony Computer Entertainment of America failed to inform customers of the data breach of the PlayStation Network on April 20.

"When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised," Blumenthal said in a release. "Compounding this concern is the troubling lack of notification from Sony about the nature of the data breach."

"Immediate" notification? I understand why a politician would say such things to the media, but it sounds like Sen. Blumenthal needs to bone up on his information security law. The states have different laws on this, with some allowing up to 60 days to notify the victims. In Blumenthal's state of Connecticut, for example, "the law allows time for the Business to complete an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the breach, to identify the affected Connecticut residents and to restore the reasonable integrity of the data system, before issuing its notifications." Indeed, no notice is required in Connecticut if, after consulting with the law enforcement agencies, the Business reasonably determines that the breach will not likely result in harm to the affected individuals.

Hate to break it to some of you guys, but chances are your info has already been taken before. And if this is a first time for you, my guess is it won't be the last.

Anyways, from someone who's had their card info stolen twice before, I think this is all much to do about nothing. If an unknown charge shows up on my account, I call my bank and it's immediately refunded. So long as I complete the affidavit they send me and return it to the bank, it's their loss...not mine. And if I'm not watching what charges show up against my bank account, then shame on me. In this day and age, it's become part of life...plain and simple.

Just pointing out the law, Vin, and the reality of the world we're living in. I'm more pissed about not being able to get updated Show rosters this past week than anything else relatingto this story. :D

My question is, if Sony's just the latest in a long line of companies to be hit with this, why all the venom from some people?

I'm not going to defend Sony but it's interesting that people are blaming them more than the thieves.

Sure if my house was burgled and the security service I hired f***ed up, I won't be too happy with them. But I wouldn't forget about the thieves either.

I never had my credit card info. there but people are speculating that Sony kept. your PSN passwords in the clear rather than encrypted. That would be stupendously inept security programming if true.

I've read elsewhere that the breach was more the hackers trying to get hacked consoles back on PSN -- the PS3's encryption key was cracked (again because of poor security design) and there was a cat-and-mouse game for a couple of weeks as Sony issued firmware updates to prevent pirated games from running including getting on PSN while the hackers cracked these firmware releases as they came out.

So the hackers may have been able to pull the login and personal info. when they had broken in but it's not clear if they did copy that data.

Why did people put their credit card info. on a free service? When I registered in 2006, there wasn't any DLC and in any case, I wasn't going to put my credit card on there. ARound then, there were efforts to get people to sign onto digital wallets but I believe other gaming services had been hacked.

Only way I was going to buy anything was through those prepaid cards and I've never bought anything there. My iTunes credit is only from gifts, not any of my credit cards.

Best approach is not to buy anything from these services. Amazon has my credit card because you can save a lot of money buying there instead of retail. But otherwise, paying for DLC or online play is for suckers.

Sony has really managed to ass this up. Hopefully not much comes of it, but this is a potential disaster for Sony. I'm not too worried since there are 77 million accounts to choose from, but if the hackers decide to sell the info to organized crime in another country then we could be looking at some massive fraud.

Thanks for showing us the superior way, WCO. You are truly superior, so much so that I think we should call you Superior Man. I guess I am a dullard for ever buying anything via DLC when I could have just bought MP3s of my Rock Band downloads and played along to them in my mind.

BTW, if you've ever handed your CC to a waiter at a restaurant, congratulations, you've made a completely unsecure transaction.

As for Sony, seriously f*** those idiots. I didn't have any CC info on PSN, and my address is probably two moves ago, but having e-mail, password, and DOB compromised is just appalling and annoying. Now I get to play the password change game today for some of my accounts.

Odd as it may sound, i'm not sure if I gave sony my CC info. Is there a way to verify that without being able to log into PSN?

Look at your next monthly statement for unusual charges, then you'll know. :)
