Ergo, the data say otherwise, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say football is in trouble. Spoken like a man who took one too many blows to the head.
I don't see the NFL losing it's spot as the king of sports any time soon. It's by far the most high entertainment/low time investment product of any sport. I can't see any other sport overtaking it.

Since the last two Super Bowls are the #1 and #2 most watched programs in the history of U.S. television period ..Not just sports....I dont see where he could possibly be off track.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
I totally agree...well put. Listen, I'm a baseball guy thru and thru but realize that, although it's still "America's Pastime", football is and will be the #1 spectator sport for a long while. Low time investment is a great point. Once a week the NFL teams have to put on a show whereas baseball, basketball, hockey need to do it numerous times a week. It's tough to watch every Phillies game throughout the year. I try but its tough. I think another point is the Fantasy Factor. My interest in the NFL has gone thru the roof the past five years with fantasy football and things like NFL Red Zone. Troy needs to reevaluate those statements...IMO.Brando70 wrote:"At some point, the TV ratings are not going to be there. I do agree with Aikman that expanding the game schedules is not a good idea -- part of what made pro football great was keeping the games to Sunday and Monday night. But his point about people not caring about the Thursday night game showing indifference to football is wrong. Unless you have DirecTV, you miss a whole bunch of games. It's a minor problem, not a portent of doom.
Diablo, good point about fantasy. I am in a pretty intense keeper league and that fuels my interest in football almost as much as the sport itself.

Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
Well, if people realized their cable bills increases are driven by sports and since the NFL is the biggest sport ...
The Thursday night games degrade the quality of play. Imagine a team playing on Sunday and then having to fly across the country to play Thursday night. They've eliminated the days off and preparation for the players. Injured players and even healthy players don't have a chance to recover.
Sure TV pays the bills but it's compromising the sport. Nothing new of course but they're really pushing it.
Also, shouldn't it be time for a new thread?

We usually start a new one around the NFL Draft. The season is over so not too much to say unless Troy goes Troy, then it's news.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
Of course Brando is right that there is no rational basis to say the NFL is in trouble. However it does feel to me like the NFL is probably at a popularity peak in terms of interest and ratings. Baseball is coming back, the NHL is returning from oblivion, and the NBA seems to be regaining some mainstream appeal.
I do have also have to say that compared to attending NHL and MLB games, attending NFL games is an awful experience. The security, absurd amount of stoppage time and ads, cavernous stadiums, violent drunken fans (maybe this is a draw to some!). Very much a tv sport, whereas I would say the opposite about baseball.

Much rather watch an NFL game at home where Id rather be at an NHL game.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
There is no greater OMG feeling in sports than going to a night baseball game and going to your seat and watching the bright green grass and red clay when you walk out from the concourse of a baseball stadium. I've been to many baseball games over the years and it still gets me how beautiful a baseball diamond looks all lit up.XXXIV wrote:Agree!Naples39 wrote: Very much a tv sport, whereas I would say the opposite about baseball.

And you guys are right, watching an NFL game live sucks. It's definitely a made for TV sport. Also a 100yds doesn't look all that impressive live as it's made to appear on TV.

No sports are more visceral in person than motor racing and boxing. And TV doesn't deliver anything close to the live experience for both sports.

Can't speak on racing but boxing is an experience in person...especially when your crazy ass brother sneaks into the world champ's entourage and joins the pre fight jaunt to the ringpk500 wrote:No sports are more visceral in person than motor racing and boxing. An NFL game live really depends on the game you see. I had an amazing time at the Packers-Bears NFC Championship game. This past season I went to the Vikings-Bears game, which was a laugher, but also got to see a Hester kick return live. It's also interesting to watch the plays develop. It's one of those things I enjoy doing once every season or two.

Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
If you can catch 'THE BRADY 6' on NFL network, see it.
It's about Tom Brady's story and his struggles to reach where he is, future HOF. Shows the 6 QBs that were picked before him and where they are now, all out of football.
And the guy who was the 199th pick of that draft, the last QB chosen, is a 3 time SB champ and HOF'r. he even breaks down crying remember how on draft day he thought he would never get drafted when he kept getting passed up.
After watching this I gained a lot of respect for Brady. I take back all the bad things I said. It was ignorant of me thinking he wouldn't be anything without the tuck rule. No, he earned everything he got. I now wish he would have got those 5 SB rings.

I never hated Brady for his skills on the field. He's earned with what he's done with his career. Definitely a HOF'er. I remember everyone gasping when Drew Bledsoe went down and Brady getting the #1 spot at QB.Lancer wrote:If you can catch 'THE BRADY 6' on NFL network, see it.

If it wasn't for that game with the controversial non-fumble, history might have gone differently.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
Maybe, maybe not. That had no carry over affect for the other two SB's. Although Billicheat was in his prime, impersonating a cameraman and under the radar before he got caught.

Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
It's shocking to me that any discussion about Brady on this board will inevitably disintegrate into a rule that was on the books years before it was called and something every coach was, is, and always will do. Brady is a HOF'er because he is one of the hardest working players in the NFL. He is a student of the game and has been since Michigan. He wasn't handed gifts, he works hard to get the most out of whatever natural talent he has. A lesson lost on too many pro athletes who think they "deserve" everything they are given.
On a more neutral topic, RG3 runs the second fastest 40 time for a QB ever behind Vick. Good thing too because he's likely gonna end up on a team where he's going to be running for his life.

Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
I read the colts may take RG3 over Luck. I could see that but I'd keep Manning to mentor whoever they pick.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
I know Luck had a stellar college career but those types of players can either fall in the Peyton Manning or David Carr category. You never know but the I pity the guy whichever team picks him. He will be under enormous pressure to produce right from the start.
Re: NFL Season 2011-2012
Peyton would have to take the vet's minimum to stay with Indy.
Rumors were that he wanted to play in one of the last games of the season but he couldn't throw more than 25 yards so they were thinking of playing him in the red zone.
