Nah, not interested. The standard service is still free, something MS can't claim.

The standard service is still terrible, something Sony can claim.

Bottom line Sony lost the online segment this generation and copying Live and adding some marketing bells and whistles at this point is too late.

I mean what happened to Home? Remember how that was going to change the online space?

True Danimal, but for someone who just wants the occassional demo, PSN still works fine for me. Home was a disaster, and my online gaming nose dived a few years ago, so I can't really complain. It's pointless for me to spend $50 a year. In a five year span, that's $250. Too much imo.

Now, that's not to say they one day Sony may jerk us and force us to pay. But as it stands, I'm not missing XBL or Playstation Plus.

Fair enough but if anyone is paying $50 a year they are not looking too hard. I managed to snag several times in the last few years 12 months cards, one time as low as $19 a card. Needless to say I have 6 cards sitting in front of me so I am covered for the foreseeable future.

Yeah I dont think I have ever paid full boat. Not that I wouldnt have. Its light years ahead of Sony and its worth it just to hang out with you clowns. Plus there is the added bonus of listening to Zeppo coach the power play in NHL. 8)

Which reminds me I need to start looking...

Sounds like the PS3 may have finally turned the corner for Sony:

"July 29th, 2010 at 9:36 am -

Over the last couple of years, Sony has looked like a complete embarrassment with its yearly losses due to the gaming division, which in result, dragged down the total numbers across the board for the electronic giant. However, Sony has finally started reporting in the black after the opening fiscal quarter for this year (April 1 to June 30).

Finally in the black, Sony has reported that the company has pulled in profits of $295 million dollars in just that short span. This puts the company on pace to break well over the billion dollar mark come the end of the fiscal year in 2011. Sony’s entertainment division saw an increase of 34.2% year-over-year which is a very strong increase on an overall scale.

This trend should continue for the console creator as the year goes on and hopefully it leads to something better for consumers, such as another price cut."

GT: is this $295 million mark, the amount the gaming division made? Or by the overall Sony company?

They are still being outsold every month by the Wi and 360. They may be making money but I wouldn't be too happy if I were Sony.

Well fvck me... My PS3 suddenly can't read Blu Ray games nor movies.

It plays standard dvd movies (ps2 games) just fine...

Tried a Maxell Blu-Ray lens cleaner but it didn't help.

Sony already had replaced the BR drive a couple of yrs ago (for free) but the warranty for it was only extended for 90 days.

Has anyone had this problem?

Yes it's happened a lot judging by the complaints on the Playstation forums. Just don't go to the forums and say the latest firmware update broke your PS3 or they'll call you an Xbox fanbois. :)

Starting 10/18/10, you won't need the Netflix disc for use on the "watch instantly" movies.

About time! :)

Yeah they are also promising 1080p content and some content with 5.1, which isn't offered on any other Netflix boxes yet.

But still don't see too much content on Netflix streaming that I'm interested in, either SD or HD.

If they had old seasons of the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, etc. on HD streaming, that would be worth it but it doesn't seem they have that much in the way of old HBO shows, especially in HD, because the DVD and Blu-Ray box sets probably still sell.

The Wii should really get this too, since you can't even play (without a hack) a physical DVD movie on the thing.

I have one of the coveted 60GB, 4 USB, backward compatible PS3's and it runs fine. However, I prefer to keep my systems in a cabinet rather than exposed, so heat and reliability are the most important things to me. I just replaced my 360 Elite with a new Slim and love the reduced noise and confidence that its not has hot. Have the ability to swap my 360 for my neighbor's PS3 slim, and then sell my fat to cover the cost of my new 360.

Anyone think that's crazy? Is the PS3 slim as quiet and cool as the 360 slim? Not that my 60Gb PS3 is loud, but you can certainly hear the fans go into overdrive if it's on for a while.

Thoughts appreciated as I'm likely pulling the trigger on this today.

And if anyone is interested in a 60GB Ps3 fat with BC, post an offer.

I have both the 360 S and 250 GB PS3 and both are quiet and so far reliable.

Keep the Phat Sport, they're coveted for a reason. ;)

If your Phat dies on you there's a third party service company that is now doing re-ball on PS3 motherboards. http://www.gophermods.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=5

Finally getting a ps3 - just traded in my wii and games for $230 which will give me enough to get a used 40GB PS3 for around $220.

Anyway.. games? I'm sure by now there are some great ps3 games I can get realitively cheap?

MLB The Show - that's getting purchased right off the bat
Uncharted?
Killzone?

Thanks!
