PS3 Impressions Yes Another One....

I wrote a series of articles about the HDD upgrade process a few months ago. Summary is here: HDD Backup and Recovery Adventure
I lost years of PSX and PS2 save files (memory cards). It was rather depressing. Make sure you do file-by-file backups of your important files.

A bit of clarification on the disk format issue. When you send in a PS3 to Sony for repair they really aren't repairing your PS3. They do just like Microsoft and pull a refurbed unit off the shelf.
The problem lies with Sony's DRM. Anytime you put a hard drive into a different PS3 it will need to format your hard drive in order for you to use the exchanged unit.
Now if they actually repair your system then there is a chance the hard drive will not be formatted.
That's why I say call Sony ASAP today and request your system get repaired instead of being swapped out with another. Also record your serial number just to make sure you are getting back your PS3.
That's when my PS3 fails i'm going the heat gun route or third party repair.

Pretty much what I expected, though not what I wanted to hear. I can't get to my files now because of the error, (can't do anything but power back off) so I'm probably screwed.
I haven't sent the unit in yet, Rod, but I plan on papering it with *please try to save the saves* paperwork when I load it up.
But in all honesty, I'd rather get a new unit for free than pay to get the same one fixed, even if it means I have to start somethings over.
Kids will be upset about LBP, though.

Not that this will do any good for Web at this point but the PS3 does have a backup feature. You can backup your console to a flash drive or probably even a USB hard drive. We should probably all be doing that every so often, just in case.

They actually repaired mine and sent me back my unit. But they only had to replace the Blu Ray laser.Rodster wrote:A bit of clarification on the disk format issue. .
I don't think that method worked for me Web. I had them put a note in my file saying to send me back my same system and to not to wipe the hard drive, and I also wrote a note and put it inside the box as well. Considering they received my shipment yesterday and then sent me a package about 3 hours later, they must have just pulled a refurb unit from the shelf.webdanzer wrote:Pretty much what I expected, though not what I wanted to hear. Didn't work for me either. My new unit is on the truck for delivery right now.HipE wrote:

Amazing turnaround, but yeah, can't be what I sent in.
Received my new PS3. Despite losing my saves, that is some amazing turnaround. I sent my system out on Monday, got one back Friday of the same week. That's pretty darn good.
Losing saves is so deflating, though. Demon's Souls makes me want to cry, and I was at the last bit of Uncharted 2 as well. My kids had lots in LBP they lost too. Ah well, will back up this time.
Good news is that I expect to be playing the new Show (and Heavy Rain) a lot lately, and I'd be starting from 0 there anyway.

Buy a Slim and install a 500GB notebook hard drive. Just make sure it's a 5400rpm drive.TheGamer2 wrote:anyone in the chicagoland nowhere to pick up a 250? A gamestop friend says they're sold out in the entire state.
Here's a $70 notebook drive.

Hell no!
Not bought a single thing on PSN, won't put any money in the account.
Rumors tho that you have to have a Plus account to be able to use Hulu Plus, which for $10 a month lets you watch TV shows you get on regular TV with commercials you can't skip. What drugs are these executives taking?
There's also speculation that you have to get a Plus account for cross-game chats.
