Players in general do seem to track runs and force loose passes much better this year, while stepping in and intercepting passes better than last year. Going forward players are anticipating the ball in a more realistic manner and will often set off on a run where they expect a ball to go. This makes the game feel more on edge and mistakes are more realistic as a result.

I'm just having a hard time playing defense. Too much WE over the years I guess. But it's next to impossible to contain players. Like shut down passing lanes and having the pass it back.

AI passing is far too accurate, very similar to NHL and hey they want their game.

If you play on manual settings, scoring a goal is more rewarding the PES has ever been.

Messed about with the Virtual Pro online club tonight. Interesting. I'm not sure that I like it, but it's a different sort of experience than standard OTP or last year's clubs.

Since mt nephew's internet is down for at least another month (no co-op with Borderlands), I picked FIFA up instead, and WOW, I am glad I did.

Thanks for the impressions everyone as this game is FANTASTIC.

It plays so smooth. Manual passing is much better this year as it is a bit more forgiving but still a HUGE challenge.

I found myself stringing passes together, but lacking that final good pass on most occasions.

It makes the game feel mega organic.

I know some have mentioned the graphics, but it looks terrific on my 42" HDTV :)

This is soccer nirvana!

I'm still quite a bit underwhelmed. Gameplay is solid, with some positive changes to what was already great in 09. Manual settings are a revelation, but the too-fast pace, even on slow, effectively kills the ability to play with all settings on manual, as the CPU opponents close faster than you can hold down the button for a decent long pass.

Then there's all the little inexplicable flaws, like the 50+ bugs documented in manager mode and yet only 6 fixes in the next patch (with no more planned according to EA). Even when the big problems are fixed, like disappearing players, we'll still be stuck with idiotic stuff like white balls in the snow, cup finals on weeknights, stands half full for all matches, big name European transfers to Korean club sides, etc. There's also the custom tactics that they forgot to set for everything but the top-tier sides, leading to that old FIFA bugaboo where all opponents play exactly the same (only now it's everyone but Man U, Barca and a handful of others).

Then there's the normal EA greed thing gone wild. The lack of international tournament modes (both clubs and nationals - the absence apparently designed to sell us CL and WC editions later). LiveSeason is no longer included, but available as paid DLC (although the entire thing is broken at the moment and pulled from the store). I'm also wonder how long it will be before online becomes an complete and total cheezefest with all the DLC "cheats" available for purchase.

Online team mode is still sweet, but again not without issues. I am having a way harder time keeping track of the action in online team mode with any of the camera angles than with 09. When it works. Hopefully it was just a US launch server jitter, but I wasn't able to connect most of last night and when I could was getting some very weird stuff like my controller showing up with other people's names.

I don't regret the purchase, as 10 is still great for offline multiplayer when both sides don't use all assists and no doubt for online leagues with trusted folks, but it's a long way from a perfect experience and likely will have a pretty limited freshness date due to a mostly broken single-player experience.

Strangely, the PSP version (and probably the PS2 version) has improved by leaps and bounds this year to the point of actually being playable. Not only do sides play differently but they have this great inter-screen showing the tactics they employ. Plus all the modes are there - league, tournament, etc. I must admit that again I am enjoying the current-gen soccer experience more than next-gen, which was a phenomena I thought was limited to PES.

There, my 2¢...

The OTP camera default angle was aweful. Jumping straight into that mode I didn't change it on time and I was completely lost in the 1st half of my first game. Once I switched to tele it was more playable, but I had some lag in my games. I am sure it'll get better.

On the EA greed thing Blub...

EA lost the Champions League. And I thought I read somewhere that FIFA wants it's own game so that's why you see another game.

The live season does suck because you don't get a freebie.

PIGPEN:
The game does feel organic, more so than any other videogame I've played. Just amazing.

OTP questions

Post by wco81 »

1) Is it still the same 5 minute timers, in the game session and in the position-select screens?
2) Is it possible to kick any player who's not clicked in (set to "Ready")?
3) Is it possible to view the connection status (green or red) BEFORE joining a game session?
4) Are players still at the mercy of waiting for laggards to click in in the position-select screen or can the captains boot anyone before starting the game?
5) Is there any change to the UI for booting players in game than "List All Players" screen?
6) Is there any kind of stat-tracking for individual users from OTP game to OTP game?
7) Are there ranked OTP games to track records?
8) Are people using DLC boosts in OTP games?

1) No, I played several OTP random matches last night and the most I ever saw clock at was around 1:45, but even then it sometimes ticked down in 10-15 sec increments. It didn't do this all the time so I dont know why it was doing it, but it did. The most I waited around to launch was about a minute. Also, all the guys that wait around without choosing a team...they get booted automatically and not assigned to a team...thought that was great.

2) I didn't see a way to boot anyone before launch...I was only captain once though

3) Only connection status I saw in OTP was the same one from last year.

4) Again, I didn't see a way to boot but didn't really have this problem since most of the laggards were booted before the position select screen.

5) I only saw the list all...doesn't mean something diff isn't there though

6, 7, 8 - dont know

I think I'm going to pull a tjung here and say this is the finest game of football I have ever played in the years of FIFA, PES and the second rate games.

There are some tweaks I would like to see made but the game is just plain organic creating a fun football experience.

As strange as it sounds, the game reminds me of how MVP felt. That game felt like anything could happen and there was nothing canned.

Scoring goals in the game, if you play on manual or manual shooting with few assists feels just sublime.

I agree about the goals. PES has always been king of satisfaction felt after scoring a goal, but FIFA 10 now maybe even trumps PES in that department. Building up a play and then striking the ball into the back of the net has never been more satisfying. It's ashamed that there are so many glitches being reported because this game so far for me is utterly fantastic. I was worried going in since NHL 10 got such high praise and I thought it was essentially rubbish in terms of AI and gameplay, so I was concerned the same might hold true for FIFA. FIFA 10 has perhaps exceeded my expectations more than any sports game in recent memory. Glitches aside, this is a brilliant game with a lot of really cool features. The developers deserve all the praise they are receiving.

Two things.

1. New patch out on 360. http://fifasoccerblog.com/blog/new-patch-out-on-360/

2. The game is far and away the best soccer game I've ever played. Struggling to make the default scrubs in the Online Clubs actually win is incredibly rewarding. I do hope that the matchmaking improves, because it's not fun getting stomped by teams with 10x the XP of our club. But still, it is damn fun!

This game is the best soccer game I've ever played - totally agree with you and honestly.. I'm not so sure much else sports gaming wise is going to get much playing time.

I was up all night playing, had some friends over and today one of them calls me and says they picked up an x360 and the game.

The word "organic" is now a common video game term and that term fits FIFA 10 better than any sports game I've ever played - and I'm not a soccer freak. :)

I read the list of fixes the second patch makes, and it seems to address many of the major community complaints. It's great to see EA interacting with the FIFA community and making fixes so quickly.

I am still enjoying the game a lot. FIFA 10 may be the best EA Sports game I have ever played. I tried out several of the modes beyond Manager mode and had fun with all of them. It's fun to upgrade your player across the various modes of play.

The thing about FIFA that is still impressing me the most is the flow of the matches. EA nailed it this year. The flow is not so realistic as to make things tedious and long for a video game, but it is not so simplistic and overly fast that it feels cheap and dumbed down. They hit a good balance that suits my gaming preference to a tee. After playing a match with 5-min halves I actually feel like I've played a somewhat proper match of football, with a reasonable amount of quality chances, building up some nice plays, and encountering a satisfying number of set pieces.

I am going to play many hours of FIFA this weekend. It is quite an addictive game.

I totally agree and was thinking the same thing last night. Love the flow. Love the organic nature. Pretty much love the game in general.

Interesting article on how FIFA turned the franchise around for the 360.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/f ... ial?page=2

Those of us who played a lot of '08 know that the short answer to that question is "copied the hell out of WE/PES." A quote from the lead developer:

"I've been a massive PES fan since the original PlayStation. Indeed I played it almost exclusively until FIFA 08."

I still wish they would work out the matchmaking issues in club play, but this is the first FIFA where the sheer sense of joy that I used to get from WE is present in the single-player game.

Playing with everything set on manual and world class level is tough! I'm reducing players of the calibre of Gerrard and Torres to Sunday league scrubs!!

Best wishes,
