Re: The really great TV thread
I finally got around to starting Boardwalk Empire. Just finished the first episode, and I am very happy with it. As much as I anticipated it, I expected that it would be by-the-numbers in many ways. It's really much more peculiar than I expected, and I'm thrilled about that. I think the casting of Buscemi was inspired, not just because he's a fine actor, but because his performance contradicts so many of the traditional characteristics of a mob boss archetype. The music, cinematography and period detail are all fantastic.
It is a bit stingy with exposition, and Winter is clearly not afraid to challenge the audience with unconventional pacing, humor and characterization. I'm sure that attitude will result in some clunkers, but on balance I think it'll serve the story well.
I'm anxious to knock out a couple more episodes this weekend.

The proverbial touch paper ignites after two or three episodes. If you like "Boardwalk Empire" now, you'll effing dig it in a bit.
Like you, I have enjoyed this series from the onset. But it's even more compelling now as story lines and characters flesh out.
Buscemi is fantastic, as always.

The Walking Dead premier definitely did not suck.

Really, really liked it. I was expecting it to be a bit toned down for TV and I'm glad I was wrong.RobVarak wrote:The Walking Dead premier definitely did not suck.

It was a fantastic premiere. I talked my wife into watching it by just calling it a "new show that's supposed to be really good". The word zombie never escaped my lips. She was hooked by the end of the first 30 minutes. Can't wait for next week.

Last night's Eastbound & Down had so many ridiculous quotes in it, I wanted to write them all down. Best episode yet.

Indeed. Nucky and Jimmy get more and more interesting as the onion layers of their character are peeled.JackB1 wrote:Another great episode this week!pk500 wrote:Rob:

I love gratuitous sex as much as the next guy, but what exactly was the point of the lesbian scene with Jimmy's girlfriend? Save that angle and spend more time showing Gretchen Mol getting done doggy-style in full glory, like the episode two weeks ago.

I still think Jimmy is the weakest part of the show. Almost feels like DiCaprio in Gangs of New York -- out of place.
Re: The really great TV thread
Yeah, that scene was pretty lame.pk500 wrote:

I just knew Jimmy was going to get that sniper dude to take out the guy who cut up his hooker friend. Brilliant scene with the camera going thru the bullet hole

Re: The really great TV thread
Well put AND I couldn't agree more. I loved this week's episode. I got a chuckle out of the scene with Jimmy at the hospital with the sniper. Loved Jimmy's line when his new friend explained how he took out the German sniper..."Well, f@ck him."pk500 wrote:Indeed. I heard that line a different way in something else.
"There is no 'I' in 'team'...but there is a 'u' in 'Shut the f*** up!'"
I kind of like that version better. Can't remember where I heard it, though.

Db, gotta agree that the first episode of the final season wasn't too terribly impressive, which was a disappointment. It seems as though they tried to rush some of the storylines in the premier. Actually, there seemed to be too much going on in the first show that they didn't really have time to focus on any one particular story line.
It didn't seem too believeable that a guy who was disinterested in playing football all of a sudden decides to join the team after a little pressure from people he doesn't even know. Also, to see Julie go off to college without either her mother or father driving her seemed a bit unrealistic. I'm growing a bit tired of Landry and am kind of hoping he's only going to show up periodically now. All in all, the acting seemed a bit forced and felt rather 90210 esque. Hopefully tonight's episode will be a stronger performance.

Julie's full lotion milk buckets still looked good.

Re: The really great TV thread
The second episode is MUCH better...tho they are really stretching for some of these storylines. I don't remember rolling my eyes so much during past seasons. Hmmm...guess we'll see how it plays out. And yes...me likey milk buckets.sportdan30 wrote:Db, gotta agree that the first episode of the final season wasn't too terribly impressive, which was a disappointment. Agree, the second episode was better than the first. Though I still think the acting isn't quite as strong as the seasons that preceded this one. A lot of that has to do with the introduction of new characters. Still, it's a show I look forward to each and every week.

I'm not a horror guy and I've never been one who cared for the idea of the undead movies or whatever, but I just finished watching the replay of the Walking Dead and I'm pretty hooked. Thanks for the head's up on this one boys. Really looking forward to Sunday night.
Re: The really great TV thread
Bumping thread for last night's Dexter and, too a lesser extent, The Walking Dead.
Two of my favorites right now.
I think last night's Dexter had perhaps it's single most significant scene in the overall Dexter story arc. Very touching (unrelated) exchanges for Dexter and Deb's characters and a resurgent performance by this season's Jonny Lee Miller.
TWD, I think, had a third episode more on par with the first after talking a slight dip, IMHO, in episode 2. I am concerned that the protagonist is beginning to appear too flawless, though this may be a result of the source material. His erstwhile partner, on the other hand, is far more flawed, but is not really likeable in many ways. I'm curious to see how things develop but in a show that is about the human stories as much as the encroaching horror, I hope the writers can strike a consistent tone throughout.

Re: The really great TV thread
I can't believe their are only 2 episodes of the Waling Dead left, then you're going to wait probably a year for the next 13. I understand it was a risky move for a series like this, but would it of killed them to make 13 episodes for the first season?
