I will pay premium if one of you guys can help me out in getting a Wii. Please.
But I could be wrong, and be unable to get one easily. We'll have to wait and see.
Wii officially $250 on Nov. 19

Current estimates for the Wii continue to suggest that it will not be all that difficult to find on/around launch day. I would expect that it's a sincere part of Nintendo's strategy to have a Wii sitting on shelves for every disgruntled PS3 shopper.

Not very encouraging hands-on impressions of Wii Sports from IGN's Matt Cassamassina, one of the biggest Nintendo shills in cyberspace:

"I think it is cheating. You don’t have to go through the full motion. In Wii Sports Baseball, you could make a full throwing gesture with the Wii-mote to hurl the ball at the plate. Or, you could quickly flick your wrist to replace the full-blown motion."
He's complaining that little motions from your seat are just as good or better than mimicking, on your feet, the entire athletic motion of throwing the baseball? I would have expected this myself, and am not disappointed to hear it. In fact, I would be disappointed if it were the other way around - I never thought the big gestures seen in the commercials were anything but exaggerated gestures for commercials.
Then there's this complaint:
"Wii Sports Baseball has other puzzling deficiencies. For instance, when you want to throw a curve ball, you don’t actually motion it, as you might suspect. No, why would you want to use a gesture for a console whose primary purpose is to promote unique and innovative ways to play? To throw a curve ball, you first select it on the D-Pad and then make a standard throwing motion. Huh?"
Huh, indeed! What, does he want to be throwing the controller now, too? I guess I'm dim, but I'm not sure I see how, outside of throwing the remote, one would 'actually motion' a curve ball.
I'm sure there could and will be better implementation of the controller than these launch-special, bundled, controller demos, but these complaints strike me as a little too much. I haven't played these games yet, but it seems his expecations were quite different from what mine are. We'll see.

I think I understand what he is getting at and if I'm right I kind of agree with him. It would be much better to use the Wiimote at different angles for different pitches rather than selecting the pitch and using the same motion to make the pitch each time.Zeppo wrote:"Wii Sports Baseball has other puzzling deficiencies. I can't believe player movement isn't controlled by the gamer in Wii Tennis. So all you do is stand in front of the TV and swing your arm?
I understand Nintendo is using Wii Sports as almost a pack-in tech demo for the Wii and Wiimote, but that tennis gameplay would get old pretty quickly, I would think.

I don't disagree there, I just don't understand what he means by 'actually motion' it, and I think it reveals some unreasonable expectations.ScoopBrady wrote:I think I understand what he is getting at and if I'm right I kind of agree with him. Remember Pk, this was my one concern with these sports games. And now I see you're a bit concerned as well.pk500 wrote:Dan:sportdan30 wrote:The Wii sports collection concerns me a bit. For instance, in regards to the tennis gaame, all you do is make the motion of swinging the racket. You have no control of running to the ball. The computer runs for you?!?! I'm hoping the other sports games are bit more involved.
Anyone have anymore information?
From my reading, I have gathered that the Wii Sports games all are pretty basic. More pick-up-and-play than anything else. Sports party games, designed for ease of play and fun.

True. I'm not as concerned as it may appear, as I'm not buying a Wii.
I'm all for pick-up-and-play, but not being able to control the movement of a tennis player is a lot like not being able to control fielders in Sega's WSB 2K1 on the Dreamcast.
Pretty lame.

I, for one, am disappointed in the games not requiring a full motion for the functions, but I still can't tell if that is the case for everything or just pitching. In other words, I am hoping and expecting that when I am controlling the batter, that my movements with the Wii-mote are fully represented. So if I go back just a little or a quarter of the way, the bat will respond the same way. Not just swing back fully with any indication that I moved the Wii-mote in a backwards motion. The blog states that you cannot control your characters in tennis but he does not specifically state whether or not you have full motion of your racket swing. He only picks out the pitching in baseball as “cheating” on this aspect.
My main fears went away when he explained who bowling worked since it appears that this does in fact use the full range of motion to execute your movement. Even if this is the only game that does that in the Wii-Sports pack, it still shows me that it can be accomplished (and done well according to the blog) so my hopes for more games to utilize this in the future is much higher.

I've always been concerned about the simplicity of Wii Sports, as before Wii Sports was announced as a pack-in I wasn't even considering buying it. The reports of people having control issues with COD3 and other FPS's have me much more concerned for the longevity of the Wii.pk500 wrote:I can't believe player movement isn't controlled by the gamer in Wii Tennis. I think it will definitely take developers time to come to grips with the console and figure out the best way to implement control schemes. I was hoping Madden would detect the direction of your throw as a means of determining the intended receiver, but maybe that will come next year.
Still, the potential is there, and most reports I've read have me encouraegd that the WiiMote is sensitive enough to execute some fairly comprehensive motions. The Wii Sports pack-in is intended to invite all gamers, NOT to show off the potential COMPLEXITY of the controls; we'll have to hope for EA/2k and others to provide that.

The Cube was always a second class citizen meaning it had to say in the bedroom on the non HD CRT WEGA. After seeing this, I think I will have to make room for it on the big screen.
Can't wait!

After learning more about wii, I am very excited about it but not sure If I will pick it up. I love the fact they pack 4 games with the system and also how you can download old games. Also love the controller and that you can play gc games on it.
Only thing that concerns me is if wii is going to be one of those systems where it's fun for the first few days then you get tired of it really fast.
But what a great deal at 250 bucks.
