Man City Remain Undefeated, Shutout Munich 2-0

Post by Zeppo »

Manchester City got back to their winning ways this evening in a visit to Bayern Munich that resulted in a 2-0 win. The first half was a spirited affair, with the home side, who were playing with a sense of urgency from the opening whistle, taking most of the chances. WC hero Schweinsteiger was the most dangerous of a talented attacking group, and he tested James on more than one occasion in the first half hour. But City were content to sit and absorb the home side's early pressure, seeking instead of building posession to take advantage of an overextended Munich side. Their strategy seemed to bear fruit in stoppage time of the first half, when Vassel took a pass from the middle into the box and was cut down. The foul drew a penalty for City, though no card was shown. Andy Cole stepped up confidently, but his strike from the spot was brilliantly saved by the mighty Kahn, who lunged to his left to only just parry the ball wide of the post. Cole kept his dander up, however, and on the ensuing corner kick from the foot of Reyna, he was able to get to the ball with his head and this time Kahn had no chance to make the save. 1-0 at the break, and the visitors couldn't have been happier.

The second half was more of the same, as City, now with the lead, continued to sit back and absord the Munich pressure. At the hour mark, Dunne struck a restart that found its way deep into Munich territory, giving them the throw but well into their own end. The throw in was immediately contested, and Reyna ended up making a quick touch pass into the box towards Sinclair, a sub who had just come on to replace B. Wright-Philips, and the winger's first touch of the match turned out to be a wicked strike off the outside of his boot that curled away from the sprawling Kahn and into the far side netting. With the 2-0 lead, City sat back and were content to defend for the final half-hour. They were playing a dangerous game, however, which was made clear when first Makaay and later Ballack made excellent bids to break onto the scoresheet, but James and the City defensive group were up to the challenge and held on for the win. With two games remaining, Man City's 'magic number' to ensure promotion is now 2pts.

B. Munich 0 : 2 Man City

Man City: Andy Cole 45'; Sinclair 60'

SoG 12 : 6
SoT 3 : 3
Corners 4 : 3
Fouls 7 (9) : 6
OffSide 2 : 0
Poss. 53 : 47

no bookings
no injuries

Great game, Leebo. I really was lucky that my sit-back-and-take it strategy worked out so well, because there were more than a few times early on when you very nearly broke through. The penalty was well earned, I thought, but wouldn't have felt robbed if Kahn's save were the final word. Luckily for me, Andy Cole somehow put that header on net, something I don't think he did once the rest of the game.

Good luck in the second half, and who knows, maybe we will run into each other in the Cup!

Barcelona and VFB Stuttgart to clash.

One look at the schedule for today and Stuttgart vs Barcelona stands huge. With everyone except Manchester City open to relegaiton, each game moving forward has enormous implications.

Barcelona survived a brilliant effort from Stuttgart in the first half of the season, forcing a 1-1 draw. Last season saw 2 very close matches between these clubs and I expect nothing less than a nail biter today at Nou Camp.

With so much on the line it will be interesting to see how the match opens. We could see two conservative teams that are looking to avoid making the costly mistake, or a couple of teams looking to gain control early.

Stuttgart is coming off a good run of form as of late with 2 wins and a draw in it's last 3 matches, including a valiant short handed effort against D2 leader Man. City. Barcelona is also finding it's form as they are looking down at a three teams in the standings and are a confident side as they move into the second half of the season.

Good match buddy..Don't worry about it...it's all in good fun. Just watch out next time because I'm coming in spikes up! Good luck to you the rest of the way as well.

Match Report:

Fiorentina 1- Werder Bremen 0

Much like their first meeting of the season, all that was needed was a single goal to seperate these two clubs.

After a series of misses on both ends, a crucial giveaway in the Werder Bremen half led to a long struck goal by Toni in first half injury time.

Werder Bremen showed some spirit in the second half, hitting a few posts and also showing a more physical style of play.

Fiorentina Werder Bremen

13 Shots 15

7 SOT 3

5 FK's 8

4 Corners 3

8 Fouls 5

0 Yellows 1

53 Poss. 47

Goals: Toni 45'+

Cards: Borowski 64' (Yellow)

Where's the Bastard now?

Well, I'm getting a game in against Mo tonight, then I may well be unavailable until Next Friday. Too many things going on this week and I'll be out of town the first part of next week. I might have spots here and there (and will post if that's the case).

Otherwise Zep... give me a forfeit. Sorry guys. I'll reassess if I can committ to next season.

Man City Wins Fifth Game, Clinches Promotion

Post by Zeppo »

The champagne was uncorked in a delirious Manchester City locker room this evening as City defeated visitng Barçelona 3-0, their fifth win in seven league games, to clinch promotion into the DSPremiership for next season with one game remaining.

City came out with urgency and attacked from the opening whistle. After several chances went begging, particularly crosses from the left that found some heads in the box but failed to find the target, Musampa took things into his own hands in the 24th minute. Racing down the left wing, he beat his defender by side-stepping a slide tackle, and brought the ball into the box. Taking one touch towards goal, he blasted a shot that beat Valdez and ended up in the far side netting.

Nine minutes later, Bradley Wright-Phillips opened his account when he found himself in possession of the ball near the top of the box with no defenders nearby. One touch towards goal to tee it up, and another to blast it into the net, and the City lead was doubled.

The second half saw more City, and Musampa created more havok on the left wing in the 62nd minute. This time, after dispatching his over agressive defender, he took the ball into the box and drew the center-half away from Robbie Fowler. A nice little pass resulted in Fowler's one-timer from six yards that gave Valdez no chance, and gave City their 3rd goal. That's where it would end, and the City players could hardly contain themselves after the final whistle. With one game to go, City are already assured of promotion into the DSPremiership. Fenerbahçe supporters are wondering where the goal scoring was in their last season in the league, a question City supporters found themselves asking all last season. Now, they are arriving at a good clip, but far more impressive has been the defensive effort, as City have given up only one goal so far this season.

Man City 3 : 0 Barçelona

City: Musampa 24'; B. Wright-Phillips 33'; Fowler 62'

SoG 19 : 7
SoT 9 : 2
Corners 7 : 0
Fouls 5 : 2 (3)
Offside 0 : 1
Poss. 58 : 42

Bookings: none
Injuries: none

Great game, Jack. I took advantage of a very in-form side, as many of my guys had yellow or red arrows, and none on the pitch were blue. Dunne was out with the grey, but I was able to possess the ball enough to keep that from being a concern. Musampa was tearing it up down that left side, and B. Wright-Phillips was very useful with his speed. What can I say, you opened the door with the over-agressive defending, especially on the wings in your own end, and there's only so many times a guy can dribble into the box from the side without finding a way to score. I wish I knew what has been different this season from last, because I would bottle it and sell it online if I could! Whatever it is, the goals are coming and I can only hope that continues next season. Good luck the rest of the way, and fight, fight, fight to stay up!

OK. Though I think if you're playing mo at 10CST/8pm, then (assuming the game will be over in about a half hour, it should be 11:30 Eastern, 8:30 Pacific. Though if I've made a mistake, let me know....I'll come at 12:30 Eastern if that's the case.

Ok, two corrections then.

Mo and I switched to 7:30pm pst. I can play as soon as we're done... for some reason I was thinking 20 minute halves, but you're right, we should be done in a half hour. Talk to you around 8pm pst then?
