Some context - that exact same injury happened to a patient of mine. Except he was hit by a car.....

What a crazy sport.

LMAO! You have got to be kidding. They need to just cancel the season. Even if they come to an agreement in December after a 2-week break (as if they really need a break), the winner of the Cup will have very little legitimacy in the eyes of many fans. Thanks for your great leadership, Gary!

Both parties are seriously underestimating the ripple effect this lockout will have on the fans not to mention your daily sponsors. All along the current fiasco I mentioned that Bettman had a mid-December deadline in his mind. Should we even live to witness a 42 games season, I doubt the games will be sold out particularly south of the border.

This lockout will be very different in the fact that hardcore fans like myself will never spend again big bucks to watch a live game. If there's a season, I'll be in the comfort of my living room or sports bar. Enough spending money with the current regime.

Sad.

Honestly though, for all the ups and downs and recriminations of negotiations, I've been telling anyone who asks me since August that I predict the NHL season would start in January. If that happens I don't see any reason to do anything but shrug and say this is pro sports today.

It would be a huge mistake though to cancel the whole season. It's not like cancelling the season solves any particular issue. The strike shortened season in 95 was hardly the end of the world from an on-ice perspective, and as long as the playoffs are full length it doesn't hurt the legitimacy of the cup champs IMO.

bettman.

This whole thing is shameful.

I hope Marc is right and it does start in January cause that is when I usually start my serious watching.

I think that that opinion of the asshole is held universally with one exception. NHL owners. Who then by definition must also be regarded as idiots.

Well, at least they agreed to meet Monday again. Whether it'll be a fruitful meeting is another story.

Looks like yesterday's meeting was just a pre-cursor to a substantive meeting wednesday. The general consensus is that the owners are content to wait for a new proposal for the players, but the players may be feeling an increased sense of urgency.

Let's hope for a progressive proposal from the players today and a reasonable response from the owners.

And to escape the depressing lockout, here's an awesome photo I saw online yesterday to remind us of pure hockey bliss.

Players show significant movement in presenting big proposal today. This proposal "works off" the owners demand, and includes a 50/50 split of HRR, as owners have been driving for.

In return, players jacked up "make-whole" from $211m to 390. Other issues like contract length...etc, not the focus.

No longer can the owners say "they're not speaking the same language" in proposals--now they are speaking the same language regarding HRR. They're meeting now to respond.

I had to laugh, I was at the Grey Cup in Toronto last night, and one of the biggest cheers was for a sign they showed on the Tron that said "100 years, 0 lockouts" in reference to the CFL.........

Take it for what it's worth but Blues beat writer Jeremy Rutherford's twitter just a few minutes ago..

Jeremy Rutherford ‏@jprutherford
Steve Burton of @wbzsports in Boston is reporting that a deal to end the lockout could be announced soon. Burton is very tuned into Bruins.

You know, at this point, the only excitement I can muster is "yay, maybe my NHL 13 rosters will get updated" and not much more.

I'm sure I will cave down the road, but at the moment I have no desire to give the NHL or the teams any of my money.

BS. So, that means they've been secretly negotiating the last few days (including the weekend) when just last week they couldn't even get anything going with a mediator present. There are planned meetings between owners and players tomorrow. Most likely nothing will come of it.

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/12/03/s ... l-lockout/

BOSTON (CBS) – The NHL lockout has been going on for 79 days and on Tuesday, a select group of owners and players are scheduled to meet in New York.

Sources tell WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton that an unannounced meeting was held Monday with a high-ranking official from each side, and significant progress was made toward salvaging the hockey season. It’s possible an announcement could come as soon as tomorrow or Wednesday.

Burton spoke with Bruins forward Milan Lucic at Joe Andruzzi’s foundation dinner, and he’s very excited about the possibility of getting back to work.

“You know if your sources are correct obviously it’s great news,” says Lucic. “It’s great for the fans I think especially. I know they’ve been probably going through the most heartache than anyone.”

Lucic says he was optimistic that the season would be salvaged and that played a big role in his decision not to go to Europe. He admits that it will take him a little longer to get into shape than those who are playing right now.

“You’re not in game shape if you’re not playing games,” Lucic said smiling. “It might take me a little bit to get back into game shape but you know I’m confident in myself that I’m going to be able to get back and I know guys in Europe that I’ve talked to, that they would like nothing more than to come back here and play in the league that they want to play in most and that’s the NHL.”

When things appear too good to be true…

This continuing lockout is unbelievably gratuitous. When you run the numbers, the sides really aren't all that far apart. Still, there's so much acrimony and handwringing after every meeting. And the Federal mediation last week appears to have been a total sideshow.

I was under the impression, and it seems most hockey writers are too, that this session shouldn't be a game changer. I could definitely believe that there is talk going on behind the scenes, and the players are increasingly willing to move their position, but it seems there is a contingent of owners who are trying to undermine the union and win a crushing victory.

This isn't 2004 with a total reworking of the league. Losing an entire season this year would be incomprehensibly dumb, but I have lost faith in the owners coming around.

"By far" the best day of negotiations in the whole lockout yesterday. "Cautious optimism" abounds.

Looks like we're in for some pretty heavy negotiations the next few days. All signs are good, but everyone is paranoid that something will go wrong.

Well the fact that both parties agreed to agree that it was a positive day is a good start. When things start rolling a bit without Bettman in the meetings yesterday, what does it say about the role he plays in this sport? Is he irrelevant? Are the owners finally realizing what fans have known for years?

Being cautiously optimistic is alright, but frankly I personally have given up and lost all respect in both parties which claim they are fighting for the well being of the sport while in fact greed and selfishness ruled in the negotiations.

It's December already and a crucial week to get the ball rolling with the entire season on the line, along talks of decertification from the PA, there's a perhaps a little more sense of urgency now if the season is to be saved.

While they are slightly different issues in comparison to the last lockout, I can't help but feel that all this could and should have been avoided in the summer as both parties dragged their asses and decided to play the cat and mouse game.

Personally, I am at the stage where I don't care anymore if they announce that the season starts next week or its cancelled for good. I am getting ready for the world juniors.

I saw one report that Bettman and Fehr are in the building having their own concurrent meetings.

This lockout has not been about reform, but simply over who gets a bigger piece of the pre-existing pie. I can only assume both sides finally stared into the abyss and realized how stupid it would be to lose this season.

Remember...Bettman only does what the owners want him to do. Maybe not all of the owners but the majority of the ones that really control the game.
I agree about the WJC's. To me this is the best hockey there is and I look forward to this every year. I hate the fact that guys like RNH, Huberdeau..etc are going to get roster spots...we already know what they can do and now guys like Hunter Shinkaruk that have earned that right to represent Canada in this tourney won't get to baring injury or the lockout being settled. I'd love to see Shinkaruk get that last top 6 spot because bottom 6 spot does him no good.
Will be interesting to see if politics still play a part in how the USA assembles their roster, they have been known to frown on the kids that passed up playing for the USA development team and instead went and played in the CHL. Last year they rounded up a bunch of those kids after one practice session and told them they were going home....a lot of them never even got a chance all because of politics.
