No it doesn't, but maybe now we will learn from our mistakes and elect a president based on things like intellect, reasoning and the important issues and not on things like "stance on abortion" or because they go to church.
All I can do at this point is cast my vote for my next President, wait for Jan09 and hope we don't suffer irreparable damage in the middle east in the interim. At least I care about what is going on, rather than most of the people I see everyday who don't even know who or what we are fighting for anymore.

Indeed. People with intellect, reason and a grasp of the important issues have better things to do than waste their time collecting lobbyist favors as politicians; They're out making boatloads of money...thank Jah!

No anything substantive they have to say will be ignored or dismissed as elitist or boring or wonkish.

Instead, it's the guy you'd like to have a beer with, the one whom most common folk can identify with, even though every one of the candidates are nothing like common folk in socioeconomic terms.

How would Buffett or Gates or even someone like Paulson fare if they ran?

Or James Simons, the most well-compensated hedge-fund manager who was a mathematics professor and a code-breaker during WWII, do in the public eye?

I like the guy that says "I can't put a black in there.......but I'm not racist"

Just shows we still have a long way to go in this country. This just shows why we have to invest more in education.

The Democratic nominee isn't going to win among this demographic in the general.

I think Clinton lost in '96 and Hilary told Bill he didn't owe "those people" anything since they didn't support him.

Democrats have won states like PA by winning the cities and other "blue" counties like college towns by a big enough margin to overcome the big deficits in the more sparsely-populated rural "red" counties.

If Clinton became the nominee, she'd lose the very same rural counties in the general which she's winning in the primaries.

This can't be right. I am always being told Democrates aren't racist :?

I find it funny that when a mostly white state doesn't vote for the black guy it's racist. Now flip the script to a state that has a large black population and they are voting for Obama at a rate of two-and three-to one and nothing is said. The fact that some blacks will vote for Obama just because he's black is just as disturbing as the comment the guy from WV made.

This election has brought out the best and worse in my race. We have a very long way to go in this country on the issue of race. Believe me it's not a white's only problem. Some of my folks practice a double standard that is so blatantly racist it's mindnumbing.

I also find it funny that when things don't go Democrates way, they stereotype a whole state and all it's people over the comments of a few idiots. Isn't that what they say the Republicans do?

God it's good to be a Libertarian. Bob Barr has just won my vote.

While I agree it's just as bad that blacks vote for Obama "just because" he's black, I understand it. It's the FIRST TIME they have had a black person with a real chance of winning and they choose to support someone of their own race. After the way Bush treated the victims of hurricane Katrina, can you really blame them? People always gravitate towards people of their own race, so does that in itself make them racist? People choose a candidate for many other stupid reasons that don't make sense. The only thing we should be concerned about is what this candidate plans on doing while he/she is in office and how they feel on the real issues.

The color of someone's skin should never be a factor in the election of a world leader...no matter how you slice it, it's nuts to base your decisions, in any way, on something so damn superficial. Anyone who's doing this for or against is completely out of the loop politically, and is doing an E! or National Inquirer form of voting, and we could wind up really screwed here...

Of course, I think we're screwed no matter who gets the nod...

Funny...it sure seems to when they're white, but not at all when they're black. The double standard has been so obvious, and yet somehow certain groups get a pass...

If you understand it,why are you calling for people to be educated on race? Do you just mean for white folks? I wasn't aware there were no white victims of Katrina? That's interesting.

Frankly yes. And again I go back to your comment about education. In your mind, does this only apply to whites? Issues and values are what should matter in an election. Bush is white like you, do you support him? Condi Rice is black yet she gets called a sellout all the time by blacks. Hell any black politician that has a R behind their name is called some of the most vile and racist names you can think of by other blacks. They need to be called on the carpet for this kind of ignorant behavior, not given a pass because they belong to a certain party.

Have these white voters ever voted for a non-white politician?

As for black voters, there's no doubt some are motivated to vote for a candidate simply because he's black.

But there's a good chance they've voted for white presidential candidates in the past as well, since there hasn't been any other black candidates than Jesse Jackson.

Please stop "nit-picking" my posts. You obviously have a agenda with me,
evidenced by your recent crude and offensive pm's. Everyone knows the majority of the Katrina victims were black. Of course there were white victims as well. Once again, you missed my point.

What's your point? Enlighten me. Was your comments directed at whites only? Or just southern whites? This is a forum and as a member I respond to posts I agree and don't agree with. You need to grow a pair or stop posting if you don't like my questions.

As far as the PM goes. It was a quick and simple response to yours calling me insensitive because I could careless about a horse.

Jack,

No one has an agenda. Jackdog will pick on anyone's posts if he disagrees with them...it's not about an agenda against you. Trust me...he's done it to my posts, I've done it to his, and you don't hear us complaining. If he makes a comment you disagree with, focus only on responding to the substance of his post, not on whether he wasn't nice to you in a PM.

And I agree with Jackdog...if you're going to make OT posts that people don't agree with, be prepared to defend them and not complain about agendas. My patience is growing thin, and if the forum "turbulence" continues, I'll have to take action.

My point was I "understood" why some blacks may vote for Obama "just because" he's black. I wasn't agreeing with it, I was just saying I understood it. All other things being equal, people will pick whoever they have something in common with. It's just the way it is. If you are interviewing for a job and you have the same exact qualifications as your opponent, but you and your boss both belong to the same church, most likely he will pick you.

My comments weren't specifically directed at whites or southern whites. They were directed at anyone who is ignorant enough to judge someone solely on the color of their skin.

I hate getting involved in these threads but i'll just add something.

It is completely different to vote for someone because they are similar to you, for a black person to vote for the first black candidate to have a legitimate shot at becoming president, then it is to specifically NOT vote for someone just because they are different than you. Everyone's got some racist tendencies, but some people are just flat out racist.

A lot of the black voters who are supporting Obama have voted many times for white candidates, including for Bill Clinton. I doubt the guy who said he didn't want to put a black in the white house has ever considered voting for a black guy before, in any election. Of course I don't know that for sure, it's just wild guess.

That being said, the mere fact that Obama has made it this far shows that the crazy card carrying racists are few and far between. There's still plenty of racism, among all people, but not as much pure hatred.
"Be tolerant of those who describe a sporting moment as their best ever. We do not lack imagination, nor have we had sad and barren lives; it is just that real life is paler, duller, and contains less potential for unexpected delirium." -Nick Hornby
