Fair enough, Greg. Also, I used to love old school Kiss, so I can appreciate your Gene Simmon/Paul Stanley comment. Under a Blood Red Sky was also my first U2 cassette (believe I was in 8th or 9th grade at the time), so I'm with you there as well.

Hope this is not too much out of line but my lad played his first real gig last Saturday.
I was so happy for them. They are all just 14 pretty damn good musicians too so heres some pics if anyone cares and a couple of songs on their my space page.
They do everything themselves and they have 4 original songs with a 5th almost complete.
Evan is the Blondey on the left.

Nice, looks like a good turnout as well.

Given the instrument lineup and the 'shapes' they are throwing, I'm guessing that they're not playing Roxy Music cover versions ?

Have to admit...news of the remix album really caught me off guard. I saw them at the Tabernacle here in Atlanta last November and there were probably 3,000 people there, the year before at the same place, probably only 2,000. Now they've got the #4 album in the land a year after release, and they're scheduled to play Phillips Arena (where the Hawks and Thrashers play) as a headliner in October. Whether I care for the "sell out" or not, it seems to be working for them.

Solid, kinda lo-fi rock.

I would highly recommend Restless Days by The Clarks. I've been listening to it for the last couple of months now and it's probably one of my top 5 albums of all time. These guys are a local Pittsburgh band that have been together for 20+ years now but don't get the national airplay being that they never signed with a big name label, they do a great live show also as I was finally able to catch them perform locally a month ago.

Official site with 4 full songs from the new album streamed on the front page: http://www.clarksonline.com/

Newest album on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0027WNROU

Some hits from their previous albums: http://www.amazon.com/Between-Now-and-T ... B000QQTU2M

Wow...I can't believe the Clarks are still around. I remember seeing them play at a bar at IUP back in the early 90s...I'll have to check the cd out. For my money though, Donnie Iris always was and will be the best thing to come out of the Burgh's music scene.

Damn, they're pretty good for being only 14. When did he start playing guitar?

Less than 3 weeks away from the new Pearl Jam album dropping...can't wait. I'll believe it when I hear it, but I've been reading good reviews for the new Kiss album that drops in October as well.

It's a shame that they're taking an all-or-nothing approach with the box sets. I could see sticking with mono up until Rubber Soul, when I think they started adding enough sonic elements to make the stereo mixes more interesting. I just wonder if the early tracks will lose some of their force in stereo and the later ones some of their subtlety in mono.

Which of their albums were originally released in stereo? I kinda figured that Rubber Soul and beyond were originally released that way but maybe I am wrong...

Stereo versions were available as early as Help (or maybe even earlier?) but I think the mono versions were the primary versions of the albums up through the White Album. The stereo mixes of everything up until them are like stereo interpretations of the original mono mixes.

I see Brando beat me to it, but this was what I typed up:

There were stereo releases right from the start; they just weren't the dominant format until later on. The reason many people hold to the mono mixes as being the "correct" ones is that up until the White Album the band and producers worked together only on the mono mix. Stereo mixes were an afterthought, and often just the engineers worked to quickly hammer it out (stories say six weeks for the mono mix of Sgt Pepper and three days for the stereo). The early stereo albums have hard separation - vocals right & music left - so they would sound right when played through a mono speaker. Engineer Geoff Emerick said they didn't even listen in the studio through anything but mono monitors until Abbey Road.

So from Please Please Me through Sgt. Pepper the mono is the "authoritative" version; one could argue either way for the White Album (I like the stereo more), and for Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let It Be it is definitely stereo.

Thanks EZ!

On another note...

Anyone hear the new Black Crowes album? I have previewed it and am interested. I was very letdown by their last effort. But this sounds like it could just be the right mix of country rock to interest me. Almost like their 'Exile'.

I almost pulled the trigger on ITunes last week but held off. If you do grab it, I'd be interested in hearing what you think.

This is what has the Beatles Hardcore so excited about the Mono Mixes:

"Since the mono and stereo mixing sessions happened at different times, there are differences between the two versions, not just in the balance of the sound but also in the actual content. Different takes were sometimes used for punching in overdubs, or an alternate vocal take might make its way into the mix. Sometimes tracks were edited differently, and would be shorter or longer, and in some cases the tape ran at a slightly different speed, changing the pitch slightly. Some of the differences are subtle, and some are not. The mono version of "Helter Skelter", to take one example, is a minute shorter, as the "false" ending fadeout is presented as the track's true ending (and it thus omits the closing scream of "I got blisters on my fingers!") The significance of these differences will depend the level of one's Beatles fandom; of course, those shelling out for the In Mono box will likely enjoy poring over the details."

Also, The Beatles were (supposedly) only "in the room" for the mono mixes. Therefore, one could argue the mono-mixes are the true vision of the band:

"for much of the Beatles' run, the band themselves considered the mono mix as the "real" version of the record and devoted more of their attention to it."

I have. It's solid. Definitely less Kid Rock and more Exile-like Stones and swamp rock in the new record than their recent releases. One exception: "I Ain't Hiding," which comes straight from the Stones' "Emotional Rescue" songbook.

I only have a couple of listens so far, so it's early for me to form an opinion. But I like what I hear so far.

Take care,
PK
