I don't think he'll win. Not when there are average American voters who watched the DNC and yelled "Now say it in Swahili!" during Obama's speech.
Yeah, 6 is right...if you believe he's not just making up excuses for taking an unpopular position. Then again, it seems that when he wanted to avoid taking an unpopular stand, he voted "present" instead. So maybe it's all Diebold's fault.

That is indeed what the article says, but I think a judicious reading of the original source material is not nearly as damning as the blog entry makes it out to be.

http://74.125.95.104/search?q=cache:RL3 ... =firefox-a
September 21, 2007, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today directed the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to look for the most fiscally responsible alternative for access to the Ketchikan airport and Gravina Island instead of proceeding any further with the proposed $398 million bridge.
“Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,” said Governor Palin. “Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,” Governor Palin added. “Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.”
Just as she claimed, she is the one who officially killed the project by instructing the DoT to find alternatives rather than pursuing further Federal funding. And this was done despite the fact that Stevens and his henchmen, as well as the local residents were trying to convince her to keep the project alive.

Moreover, her first budget did not allocate any funds for the project. Essentially she saw it as a dead end from the beginning of her administration.

Now her rhetoric at the time is far less strident than it is now, but that is understandably so. I suppose that she could have literally told Washington that she was glad that they hadn't made the appropriation. But realistically speaking no governor is going to stand up in front of her constitutents and say, "Huzzah! We're not getting a $300m bit of infrastructure. Suck it, Ketchican." :D

Pro-Obama (Probama?) blogs and columnists are also trying to criticize her for being hypocritical because Alaska received more pork $ than any other state. This is not a credible criticism. She greatly reformed the method for and the number of earmarks for her state, an action which very few governors have the political will or capital to do.

Here are some more articles that demonstrate the reality of the bridge situation as well as the Palin administration's position with respect to earmarks in general. I think the latter can legitimately be described as a reform position, particularly given the polical culture of AK:

Ditto. I don't get the problem. If anything something like this will only help her as it shows she is a real person who had real jobs throughout her life. If this is the best dirt they can dig up on her, then I have no concerns about her past.

What is interesting is how the pick of Palin has almost completely killed off any interest in the DNC convention. Everyone is talking about Palin, but not so much about the convention that just ended.

Eh, I dunno. Do you really trust the future of the free world (if McCain is incapacitated at some point) with someone who used to be a typical ol' sports anchor?

Now before you bring up Reagan at least he was president of the motion picture actors union.

Or maybe i'm just being uber sensitive after all I posted that very late last night. I probably wasn't thinking too critically. I do agree that the Palin pick has completely taken the sails out of the DNC convention and any kind of bounce Obama was going to get. I'd be very interested in seeing the polling data.

How many of those does Obama have?

1. That's not the Tony Rezko I knew.
2. That's not the William Ayers I knew.
3. That's not the Jeremiah Wright I knew.
4. That's not the Michael Pfleger I knew.

Obama has a habit of throwing good friends(Wright and Pfleger) under the bus when they become a liability to his quest for The Oval Office. He must have had a more serious drug problem than has been reported.
Because only a druggie wouldn’t know what someone they hung out with for 20 years was like. Especially people that exhibited that behavior publicly for as many years. AND VIDEOTAPED IT!

CHANGE!!!

McCain also has a habit of throwing people under the bus too! When those who he's been close with for a long time become a liability he's pretty darn quick to toss them out the window. Just look at what he did to one of, if not his closest friend in Washington in Phil Gramm.

Less then 12 hours after word got out about Gramm's remarks McCain and his group literally threw Gramm so far under the bus that you couldn't find his proverbial carcass!

(btw let it be known that Gramm had a good point in a lot of areas with his statement. Sometimes politicians should stick to their "principles" as Gramm is/was McCain's mind when it comes to economic issues)

Anyone hear the story about Obama really being a muslim?

Anyone hear the story about Obama being schooled in madrasas as a child?

Those are about as accurate. He may not have known her personally, but he damn sure knew "who she was." And I don't see the issue at all.

Don't forget that before 1940 VP's used to be elected, not chosen by the top of he ticket, so you often had running mates who were totally unfamiliar with each other. Even in the modern age you often have VP's who were not personally close or even friendly with each other. Truman famously had been to the Oval Office only sparingly before being sworn in as President and new nothing at all of the substance of FDR's policies. As recently as Reagan-Bush there was outright unfriendliness between the running mates, and nobody on the GOP side of the aisle hated the Kennedy mafia more than LBJ.

One could argue that those VP's were all more experienced than Palin, but the fact selecting a VP involves extensive review of the candidates records, positions and abilities...all of which are much more important than the chemistry between the candidates or their personal relationship.

And hey, if McCain had known her for 20 years we'd all be awash in stories about how she's a crony and insider who is just a yes-man. :)

You can't be serious. Has every VP entered politics right after college? Palin graduated from college with a journalism degree, and she put it to work right after school.

In 1988, Sarah Palin was a sportscaster. In 1988, the governor of your state, who would be a strong candidate for the GOP Presidential spot if he wasn't a native Austrian, was uttering monosyllabic lines and flexing his pecs in action flicks.

Any questions?

Take care,
PK

Well, Californians currently trust their state's future to a guy who's grasp of the English language 20 years ago consisted of, "Ah'llll be bahhhck."

Yep a better example would've been Michigan's governor (I think) who's Canadian born :)

I could care less if McCain knew Palin before making the choice - although that sounds like nonsense to me. Personally, I think it was an inspired choice. And while she is 'only' a governor - and of a state with about the population of San Francisco, what does that mean? Texas, for example, is a much larger state and yet the governor has less power than other states. Personally, I disagree with a lot of her stances, but it sounds like she thinks about what she does rather than base her decisions on the party line which makes her a lot more refreshing a choice than, for example, Elizabeth Dole. Personally, I would have preferred Olympia Snow, but that would not have done anything to pull the right wing back in the fold.

I still have no idea who I am going to vote for at this point. It will be interesting to see how things go over the next few months. I think you can tell a lot about a potential president by how they run their campaign. Consider that the same people who chose the people to run the campaign will be choosing the Secretary of State, etc.
