Not exactly new but I've been listening to a lot of older Black Keys. Just fantastic stuff.

On a side note I actually really enjoy the new Heaven and Hell. I'm sure others will say it's weak but I like it a lot.

I bought the REM Reckoning Reissue. The remaster is excellent. Amazing how 'muddy' the original sounded. The live bonus cd is great. Probably REM at their best imo.

Brando70 wrote:Dinosaur Jr., Farm. I think they are better now then they were in their 80s-90s heyday. The last album was one of the better comeback albums I've heard, but this new one is stronger and more consistent. J Mascis's guitar playing is incredible without being showy.

I'm late on the rowboat for this one, but Brando is right: This is a great album. This is what a guitar album should sound like, not that crap passed off by Chickensh*t, er, Chickenfoot.

Mascis' voice still grates me a bit, but that annoyance lasts about as long as it takes for him to rip into another great chord, riff or solo, which happens about every four seconds on this record!

Take care,
PK

Didn't do much for me on my first two listens. Disappointing IMO. Overall bland and boring to me. Hopefully I can find a hidden gem in it.
I'm with you, Spooky. Sounded more like a collection of studio outtakes rather than a proper album.

A download-and-delete job for me.

It's hard to believe, but at age 70, Ian Hunter has done it again. His new record, "Man Overboard," is excellent, coming on the heels of last year's fine effort, "Shrunken Heads."

Great, straightforward rock with typically sardonic lyrics from Hunter. A very good listen.

Take care,

I enjoy playing 'Treat Me Like Your Mother' in Rock Band quite a bit, but then again, I'm amused by most songs where they show the drummer facing the camera and singing. (White's part) :) The other RB songs are pretty meh.

The new Fiery Furnaces' record is blowing me away. Still quirky and interesting like their earlier stuff, but more accessible. A cool, cool listen.

This one really has surprised me.

Alert for all the cool post-rock kids - new Tortoise CD 'Beacons of Ancestorship'. Another on-form release from the Chicagoans, ideal to mellow along with, sat in the back garden.

Three albums that I am playing a lot of this month:

Japandroids, Post-Nothing. One guitar, one drum kit, two dudes, and a big, fat whallop of emotional garage rock. Eight songs, all about girls on some level, that don't overstay their welcome. This is the kind of music that keeps me feeling young.

Ladyhawke, Ladyhawke. More 80s music from someone born in the 80s, but chock full of catchy melodies and a craft many 80s bands lacked. Derivative? Yes, but so are hamburgers, and this is like an In-N-Out burger, tasty and classic. Worth it for "My Delirium" and "Back of a Van."

Andrew Bird, Noble Beast. Folky and soulful like M. Ward, but with more complex arrangements like Sufjan Stevens, without Stevens's occasional whimsy for the sake of whimsy flourishes. It's a few songs too long, but the really good stuff like "Anonanimal" grabbed me on the first listen.

I've always been a sucker for Collective Soul's stuff and am enjoying their new one after downloading it from ITunes. If you liked their past stuff, you'll like this one as well.

Pitchfork has an interesting article/essay on the 'Social History of the MP3'. Good stuff:

Im coming onboard a year after you... Discovered C&C last week on the NHL 09 soundtrack along with Avenged Sevenfold.

I kept wondering who the f*** was playing the songs that were getting burned into my brain and I finally took a couple of minutes out of my very busy gaming and movie schedule to find out.

Better late than never. Hell, I just discovered Led Zeppelin last month :P

man, just watched kings of leon on conan (singing that "somebody" song). can someone explain why these guys haven't been outed as total d***** nozzles, yet? I know I'm an indie snob, but come on. most bands that take more time in 'hair, wardrobe, and make-up' than most chicks, get laughed off the radar, yet they keep rolling (look for a "remix album" out in time for xmas - not joking).

I know. It makes me uncomfortable to watch them now. SUCKS big time too because 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' is one of my all time favorite albums. Really did not expect them to go that direction.

Why do they have to be 'outed' ? It's plain to the discerning music fan that they have been wank from their very first breath :)

I've never gotten into them, either. The lead singer reminds me of a cross between Steve Perry of Journey and Bono at his most annoying "I'm the rock Jesus" phase around "The Unforgettable Fire"-"The Joshua Tree" era. Not a good thing, in my songbook.

Take care,
PK

I like the Unforgettable Fire, least Eno and Lanois tried to make them interesting. That's the only U2 I can listen to apart from Achtung Baby, and Zooropa, the rest just makes me nauseous, or bored :)

Still, Kings of Leon have one thing going for them....they aren't the Arctic Monkeys, one of the finest arguments for non-elective sterilization ever devised.

Personally, I think KOL rock, regardless of how they look. Does anybody who's bagging on 'em even have any of their 4 albums? Doesn't get much better than Aha, IMO, or any of their other 3 albums as far as I'm concerned. Slow Night, So Long rocks harder than anything U2 or most other "pretend" rock bands have ever done.

Eno and Lanois made them pretentious as hell on that album, in my opinion. And it only got worse on "The Joshua Tree."

Agree with you on "Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa." Hell, I was one of the nine people who didn't mind "Pop," either.

I have all their albums (well, only paid for the 1st one) Anyway, they've got worse & worse. 'Only by the Night' is hilarious in that everyone in the world knows they get loads of p***y, so why so they have to write an entire album about how much tail they're getting? I was pimping KOL bigtime after Ah Ha to my friends, now I take so much crap for that, it's not funny.

The Followill Brothers are becoming the new Gene Simmons & Paul Stanley for the college crowd. Let's just hope Caleb keeps his tongue in his mouth in between "Sex on Fire" lyrics. (i just threw up a little in my mouth typing that)

I watched a doc on FUSE (some wacky music channel) on the making of Joshua Tree, and I found it fascinating. The amount of work Edge put into that record gave me a new appreciation of it. That whole open & build in Where the Streets Have No Name still sounds as cool as the first time I heard it.

My favorite U2 album (of sorts) is the Under a Blood Red Sky-live. I was probably in 7th grade when I heard it, & it blew my mind. It was the first U2 "cassette" I ever bought.
