No. A disturbing number of parents hang out and watch practice, even at the U6 level, in our organization. Yet another symptom of the epidemic of American over-parenting, in which they're made to feel insufficient as parents if they're not doting on their kids every waking second.

My oldest son asked me once why I didn't stay at lacrosse practice like many other moms and dads. I gave him the classic Allen Iverson response: "Practice? Practice? You want me to stay at practice? It's practice." :)

The only reason I stay at my youngest son's hockey practices is because I like to walk briskly around the rink to flush the crap out of my legs from my skiing, skating or boxing. Keeps the blood moving. Plus the roads usually are sh*tty during the winter, so I would have about 15 minutes at home before I needed to turn around and return to the rink.

I watch practice too, but I don't say anything. I just like being outside in the fresh air.

This was the biggest shock to me when my daughter started playing in Kindergarten. I walked her to practice and was stunned to see parents set up with their chairs etc. I was going to leave, of course. I saw a friend who had older kids and expressed my surprise. She told me half-jokingly, "You can leave, but then the rest will talk about you being 'that dad'." :)

The helicopter parenting thing is a nightmare.

Looks like the US is going to pull out a fairly comfortable win vs N Korea. It took them a half to get their act together, but they seem to be clicking now. Always feel kind of bad when we beat N Korea in anything because I know the players will have to endure 6 hours of public humiliation and possibly be sent off to a work camp, lol.

It was looking like an upset but the girls are coming thru.

As for kids playing soccer discussion, I wasn't a huge soccer player as a kid or followed the sport, but every parent told me how great a sport it was for kids.

I've put my kids in baseball, basketball, football, tennis, and soccer and Soccer is EON'S beyond any of those other youth organized sports.
Like others have stated, it's a very easy game for kids to play, keeps them active, and pretty much is inexpensive. You just pay for the membership in the league and uniforms. And from my experience, my kids have bonded more with their soccer teammates more than the other sports. It's almost like a special comradery amongst the soccer kids and parents that don't exist in other sports.

On the adult side, soccer parents and coachs for youth soccer are so much more excellent than the other sports. Most are professionals, have their day jobs, and volunteer (as myself) as coaches or other assistants. Also, like in other youth sports, you don't see many a-hole parents who live thru their kid wanting them to be the next Jordan or Montana or Jeter.

And the sport is mostly safe because of the safety precautions parents and organizers take. I may have posted this before but when I had put my son into pee-wee football, there was an incident on another team during a game where a 6 year old kid had suffered a concussion. I mean WTF IS THAT! Concussions at 6 years of age is f***ed up!

Baseball is ok, but they want you to do 4 days a week of practice / games/ volunteering here where I live (we have good weather all year round so baseball here starts in FEB and goes thru JUNE). And you have to do that POS Snack Shack - you other baseball parents know what I am talking about. :) Also, in baseball, you have some really trashy type of parents I've had in my experience that push their kids way too far. Our baseball is co-ed and we had this parent with issues force her 1st grade girl into baseball to 'meet boys'. ya, that's f***ed up. She's whoring her 7 year old out at 1st grade. Poor kid is overweight too and the dumbass mother keeps critizing her for it, plus the mom puts lipstick and makeup on the girl for every game. F, enough of that.

Basketball has been the 2nd best experience behind soccer for me. Only problem with its very short where I live, games and season length.

9 million watched the Gold Cup Final. That is more than Game 7 of the Hockey finals and roughly the same as the final round of the US Open.

That's great for Univision's ad rates, considering about 8.5 million of the total audience watched it on that ethnic network.

I watch Soccer on Univision too, and I don't know a lick of Spanish.

I don't need to know what they're saying because their telecast and announcers are so exciting, compared to the drab announcers either on abc/espn/fox.

Too bad none of the Women's World Cup games are on Univision or Telemundo. Yesterday's USA Women's commentary on ESPN was very bland.

Obviously Bettman needs to target the Latino demographic a bit more.

Damn, my DTV DVR only showed it broadcasting on the Fox Sports Soccer Channel, which I don't get.

Didn't think about Univision. Don't even know what channel that is out here.

The way ESPN hyped it, I thought they'd show it.

Univision is carried on more platforms without needing a sports pack and it is in HD on more platforms. I know friends who watched the Univision feed simply because it was in HD.

I was surprised to see Fulham playing in the First Round Qualifying for the Europa League last night and on top of that, they actually played a pretty strong squad.

Copa America kicks off tonight with Argentina v. Bolivia. I'm a little surprised that Telefutura/Univision/Galavision are the only ones in the US broadcasting this tourney. I guess Fox, GolTV, and ESPN did not feel like they could make money by showing Copa America. YouTube is actually showing the matches live, which is cool. Not having English-speaking broadcasts of this event on HDTV is a bummer. Copa America is usually very entertaining, so I'm looking forward to watching the matches even though I won't be able to understand 90% of what is being said.

ESPN wanted both the TV and Internet rights to the tournament. Traffic Sports, which owns the rights, wouldn't sell them as a package for whatever reason.

I am really looking forward to this tournament. Argentina and Brazil are the obvious favorites but there are a lot of Nations that have lost their fear when they face those two SA giants. Teams like Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador could surprise a few.

No doubt, and that's what makes this tournament all the more better, not to mention the fans are crazy at Copa America.

Well f*** me. I switched from Dish to Direct to get GOlTV for more football coverage, and come to find out half of the Copa America games are on Telefutura, and Direct doesn't have that unless you get the Spanish package. I had assumed Direct offered the three big Mexican channels in their upper packages, but Univision is the only one I get it seems like. The official online feed, YouTube has been less than smooth, so I've had to watch on "alternative" feeds. Sucks for football fans in America.

Match ends in a 1-1 draw. The Bolivians have to be happy. Unfortunate own goal for the Argentines. I was impressed with the Bolivian defense. They had a strong performance. I love the atmosphere of Copa America. Hopefully Argentina can get their act together for their next match.

Basically he was acknowledging that his team sucked air. No fluidity in the passes, a frustrated Messi that just couldn't connect with Tevez. There was no group communication, everyone seem a bit too overwhelmed by the strong defensive green corp that cut off all the circuits of skills among the Albicelestes most dangerous players.

Good news for them, it's only game 1. There's time to improve and I have full faith that they will. Bad news: Colombia is a much tougher team than Bolivia.

As I posted earlier, Brazil and Argentina just need to acknowledge that their superior skill with the rest of America has narrowed down quite a bit for the last couple of years. And it's not that they've declined with their usual 'Jogo Bonito', the rest of America has just improved that much.

They have to. Colombia is tough to beat but ultimately the more skillful side should prevail after a couple of more practices. Zanetti needs to be more visible offensively, Tevez is better suited in the middle, Lavezzi can improve too. They were a bit impatient I thought with Bolivia's well organized D and be more accurate with their short 1-2 give and go passes.

I thought Tevez looked like he's put on more than a few pounds, and it showed when they were pushing for the winner down the stretch.

O'Reilly with the goal of the WC so far. That was quite a precision strike from distance. US looking far superior to Colombia so far, as the should.
