The Oil has lost seven straight games, getting outscored 27-5 during that stretch.
There's absolutely no question Edmonton is the worst team in the NHL right now. Only 17 skaters dressed, including nine rookies, due to injuries and the flu. For example, when Steve Staios and Ladislav Smid got hurt last week, the Oil had to recall Bryan Young from Wilkes-Barre -- the last available pro defenseman in its ENTIRE organization. The next step is an emergency junior call-up.
It looks more like an AHL team than an NHL team. But I'm still watching, as painful as it is!
Take care,
PK

pretty crazy only dressing 17.
At least most of the time the AHL guys try their hardest. Edmonton may lose games by the fistful, but the rookies and youngsters won't be going through the motions like veterans on a hopeless team.
Got to see the Lewiston Maineiacs of the Qubec Major Junior Hockey League. Those kids really throw themselves around! Plus they have a great alternate uniform (the regular one is good with a great logo, but the abstraction from the face of the logo to form the alt jersey makes me want to buy one):

Yep. That Petersen is one plucky player. So versatile, so hard working, does a TON of little things -- especially defensively -- that don't show up on the stat sheet.Sudz wrote:They put toby peterson back on D last week.

So true, E. I am finding enjoyment in this mess by watching the kids. It's almost like an open tryout at the NHL level for 2007-08. Training camp arrives six months early!EZSnappin wrote:At least most of the time the AHL guys try their hardest. Very cool that you went to see the QMJHL. I didn't know there was a team from Maine in that league.

The model is cute, too, and would look even better with a little cream rinse rimming her DSL's.Sudz wrote:awesome logo

Well, C. Simon got a stiff sentence and deservingly too. Out for the rest of the season and playoffs action if the NYI makes it. Banned for 25 games.
The NHLPA is a mess these days. With T. Saskin suspended with pay and former boss B. Goodenow not totally out of the woods, a soap opera is in the makings.

It just gets worse for the Oil after a 5-1 loss to the Kings. From Elias Sports Bureau:
>>>(The Oilers') six goals over the last eight games ties the fewest over an eight-game span for any NHL team over the last 50 years. Four other teams had six goals over eight games, the 1974-75 Capitals, 1976-77 Red Wings, 2001-02 Avalanche and 2002-03 Flames.<<<
The horror, the horror ...

Top UFA's available this summer. Not a good list for a team like the Oil, which needs a lot of help on the blue line:

Timonen would be my choice.Feanor wrote:The Flyers really need a top D-man to play a lot of minutes and do something about their terrible PP. Maybe Souray.
With a lot of money to spend this offseason, I think the Flyers will make some serious offers to a couple guys from this group: Drury, Briere, Datsyuk, Timonen, Rafalski, and Gomez. I hope we don't bring Forsberg back, and it doesn't look like Buffalo will be able to keep both Drury and Briere. Rumors out of Philly are that Biron loves it there, has already started contract talks with the Flyers, and is personally courting Daniel Briere. We'll see what happens.
The Flyers, still with the worst record in the league, have actually been quite enjoyable to watch lately. I really like Scottie Upshall, the winger we got from Nashville in the Forsberg deal. He has 5 goals and 4 assists in 12 games as a Flyer. The kid can fly, and he's everywhere on the ice.
Another thriller at the garage between VAN & MIN. The Wild were persistent and never panicked even though they were down 2-0 in the 1st period. Late in the game R. Luongo gave up a softy one and the game went to OT. This time the game went to MIN as the gap for 1st place in the NW division is narrowed to one point only. Man, the Wild are just annoying...
Congratulations to Mike Modano for scoring his 500th goal.
Sid the Kid had a beauty of a goal during the SO in OT as Mario makes an official announcement before the game that the Pens are staying put in PIT for at least 30 more years.

Yep, the Isles can either kiss their playoff berth or any chance of advancing past the first round if Ricky is out. Dunham is solid, but he's too old and not athletic enough to carry N.Y.nyisles16 wrote:DING DING... the "Stupid Goalie of the Year Award" goes to-------------
RICKY D!! WTF was he doing coming out of the net so far to stop a breakaway? Course he collides with the dude & gets a head injury
Way to ruin the season there bud
P.S.: Nice statement win for Pittsburgh over Buffalo. Man, the East playoff race is getting really, really exciting. Quite the contrast from the West.
Take care,

Nice column on Mario saving hockey in Pittsburgh:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2797778
Total class with his center ice announcement:
"Tonight, I'm proud to announce that your Pittsburgh Penguins will remain right here," Lemieux said. "Thank you, Pittsburgh. Have a great night."
Simple, elegant, effective -- that's Mario!
Take care,
