Hey, I agree with NHL discipline for a change! There's absolutely no excuse for a player attacking a fan, especially if it was a kid who was just clapping.

I still think that there must be more than a couple of hand claps. Don't get me wrong, Rypien crossed the line, but this innocent fellow apparently has a history of yapping in Sports events who happened to be seating at his daddy's season comfy seat. Personally, I expected a minimum of 8 games for raising the fans' heartbeat but this suspension will do.

BTW, why doesn't Minny provide a plexiglass in that area or canopy, a barrier if you will to prevent future incidents between players and fans?

I think that's standard for NHL rinks. Just a small canopy as the players walk in/out. And least I've always noticed fans reaching in for high-5's at most rinks.

The claim is he just clapped and said 'way to be a professional'. If so, I basically hear worse stuff at every single game.

The kid has every right to do that as paying fan. Rypien has no right to assault him over words. None.

The incident was a great visual, and the kid probably is a spoiled little sh*t. But the punishment fits the crime.

This bout paled compared to when Terry O'Reilly dove into the stands at MSG and beat the sh*t out of a fan in the late 70s while other Rangers' fans hit O'Reilly on the nog with a shoe. :)

The Bruins' player who tore off the fan's shoe and beat his head with it while Peter McNab held him down is none other than NHL on NBC analyst Mike Milbury. McNab is the analyst for Avalanche broadcasts on Altitude.

Goons and TV -- the perfect marriage continues. :)

The amazing thing about this 1979 brawl is that NHL President John Ziegler -- probably the only sports boss who makes Bettman appear ballsy -- suspended O'Reilly for eight games and McNab and Milbury for six each. Meanwhile, Rypien gets six games today for tugging at a kid without entering the stands.

An interesting commentary on the state of NHL punishment. Bettman probably would have suspended O'Reilly for eight seasons. :)

Im glad he gave out a suspension but....

Bettman is BY FAR the most gutless head a sport has had or will ever have....The day he is fired or retires will be a great day for true sports fans the world over.

This guy is just a piece of s***.

And the Wild fan promptly begins his campaign to sound like d*****bag;
"If you do that to someone at work, you're minimally going to be fired from your job, with other thing ensuing, obviously. This is his job, his profession. He's kind of being let off easier than your average individual in society. It's kind of like athletes are above the law a little bit, and I was hoping they wouldn't do that.

[...]

"The NHL is basically saying that if you go in and assault someone in the stands, you're going to get only a little slap on the wrist. I'm pretty sure it's an 82-game schedule. ... That would be like me assaulting someone at work and them saying, 'why don't you just take two weeks off without pay.' I don't think that's reality."

"I'm getting phone calls from Canadian radio stations, even at work," he said. "Basically even going out in public. I've gotten a lot of hate emails. I'm definitely saving all of them for records purposes."
It's also not reality for someone to get in your face and clap and taunt for messing something up in the office. Probably angling for a lawsuit.

link please? Who has said that the kid has a history of yapping at players? Not necessarily doubting you but this is the first i've heard of it. Even so, he has every right to do that. I imagine every arena has a few season seat holders around the visiting bench who make a ritual out of taunting the players. The Kings have a guy known as the Mayor of section 119. I've heard him say much nastier things than what this kid apparently said. Most of the players even joke around with him. If you can't handle that kind of stuff without losing your head you shouldn't be in professional sports.

I am away from the desk now, and I can't remember where I read that about the kid but don't misconstrue what I tried to say. If you read my post in the previous page, I stated that any professional in any sport would be committing a 'cardinal sin' if they got involved physically with any fan. And R. Rypien crossed the line. Nobody is arguing the fact that a paying fan can act like a jackass if he wants to, or throw verbal insults at his will. What I was questioning is the fact that maybe the incident goes beyond him saying "way to be a professional" or just clapping his hands as Rypien exists the ice.

If so, does that excuse #37 from reacting the any he did? NO. The league thought it was inappropriate too and suspended him for 6 games, a punishment I would have stretch it by a couple of more games. But this incident just pales in comparison to the videos posted above and the incidents not long ago in the NBA.

He's got his 15 minutes of fame in ESPN and I wouldn't be surprised if a legal lawsuit is on the way.

Vernon Maxwell only got 10 games for running into the stands and punching a fan he claimed was heckling him about his wife's miscarriage.

If you go there then you get what you deserve i dont care if hes a pro or not if you cross the line prepare for the consequences, some of these losers deserve a good pummeling.

Hey you dont have the right to just hurl insults at anyone just because you payed some money some of these people just go too far its more annoying to me then funny hiding behind 10 rows of people or some plexi glass.

It apparently took the NFL one week to change the culture of head shots with its new enforcement of the rules.

The NHL has introduced new rules to curb head shots over the last few seasons, and the culture of skull-knocking continues.

Anyone else notice that?

I'd be lying if I denied that I took a little guilty pleasure in Kovalchuk being a healthy scratch this weekend after seeing wily Lou pull so many fast ones over the years.

Even though it was against Ottawa, I think that it might still qualify as one of the seven signs.

How crazy is all this though last week didnt they play a game with only like 15 skaters ? I never new the cap worked like that and never seen or heard of such a thing, hopefully teams will be wiser with the deals down the road.
