Dave wrote:Thanks for reviving this thread, it motivated me to play more of this awesome game. With Spring Training around the corner, I'm ready to play some baseball. Unfortunately the Santana trade and the Twins heading into rebuilding mode takes the wind out of my sails for MLB 08 or 2k8, so I'm glad this game has an awesome expansion/fantasy draft mode.

Quick question - besides the pitcher showing obvious signs of fatigue on the mound (huffing and puffing), how do you see your pitcher's stamina during the game?
See, the Cardinals are looking like they will be horrible this year and that's actually really motivated me for MLB 2k8. :)

If you hit "+" it brings up the options menu, from there I believe you can navigate to see pitch count, fatigue, etc.. I'll check next game I play.

I've already come to the conclusion if MLB 2k8 isn't good, I could play Power Pros for my baseball gaming fix this year.

I just recently grabbed this game. I'm enjoying it.

I went to gamefaqs to read a bit of the forum there and found this:

After playing nothing but Power Pros for the past few months, I played The Show 08 for PS3 exclusively for the last week. The game definitely does a great job of simulating baseball, and the graphics and presentation can't be matched. Every game takes a long, long time to finish though, and you spend a lot of time just sitting there watching long, drawn out animations rather than actually playing the game.

Although I had a good time with The Show, when I put Power Pros back in last night I realized again just how much I love the game. While The Show is undoubtedly a great simulation of baseball, I get nowhere near the enjoyment out of it that I get from Power Pros. You aren't going to see many walks and the rosters are very outdated, but if that doesn't matter to you, the game can't be beat. I think the hit variety smokes The Show, and all the little things you see each game keep it fresh to me even after many months of play. Plus, you can play a game in literally half the time it takes to play one of The Show, which is great for me since I don't have as much time for gaming any more.

So if you want a beautiful simulation of baseball, go with The Show. If you want a fast and fun game of baseball that is all about user control and gameplay, go with Power Pros, which I think may be my favorite baseball game I have ever played.

Bill Abner stamp of approval! And as we all know, he hates almost everything! Now there is no excuse for people not to give the game a shot!

Seriously though, is anybody still playing this? I'd like to get some discussion going about settings, and also thoughts on success mode, which I haven't tried out yet. I feel like I may just end up talking to myself though.

I am still playing, but quite a bit less since The Show came out. I'll eventually pick up the pace again I'm sure.

I love the controls, especially when using the Gamecube controller. A lot better than the wiimote/nunchuck.

All I have to say though is TRY SUCCESS MODE. It seems really geeky at first, but it is one of the most addictive modes I've ever encountered. The story moves really well and you can't help but love the quirky dialogue. Definitely my favourite part of the whole game.

I can't remember what my settings are - can post later.

I still have yet to try this game, and I've had my Wii for a month! What's this $10 deal you're speaking of Zlax?

The lack of walks really hurts the game for me. Walks are such a huge part of baseball that it really takes out one of the biggest dimensions of baseball.

Well depends on the gamer. For myself, I'm a hacker at the plate. I'll swing at anything close. Helps me speed the game along as well. So walks aren't a big thing for me in baseball games.

Always tough to get an accurate strike zone when the batters don't even have knees!

That's not the point. It doesn't matter if you swing at everything at the plate or not. If this is how we look at games, if you play a game that avoids some of the issues of the game, that doesn't mean the issue doesn't exist.

Walks are a central part of baseball and are incredibly modeled pretty well in Power Pros sim engine but they are non existent in the baseball game.

the point is to have fun playing a game. That is different for each individual. Walks don't concern me.

Can you really screw up a player in success mode? There are quite a few guides posted as to how to maximize your player's attributes in success mode, but I'd rather just play through it on my own. However, I don't want it to be a total waste of time and end up with a worthless player.

Do you have any tips for training your players during the season? I've got my players set in a few groups, with most of my hitters training contact and my pitchers training top speed. Also, since I use the Pirates I have about 50,000 owner points over my payroll right now that I can spend. I see in the shop there is equipment that you can buy to use in practice, such as different bats for training contact, power, trajectory and overall batting. Are these worth purchasing, or should I just save my money for the offseason to sign better players?

I went through success mode without a guide and ended up being a pretty all around "nice guy" without much big league potential. Sure, it was dissapointing not to make it, but the experience is worth it. If anything, it just makes me want to try again. In terms of screwing a guy up - don't worry, the mode only takes a few hours. I'm starting again as a pitcher next time.

In terms of training points, I have to admit I'm too overwhelmed with them to pay much attention. I set everything to automatic, and even then, I have no idea if it's working. I guess I don't have the patience to sort through the charts, etc....But good luck to you!

Just like with this years version of the show, I cannot find a nice balance with the settings.

What difficulty and settings do you use HipE? In particular the lock-on. If I have it set to normal I can't hit a thing, but anything else I usually hit too well.

I'm a little late to the party on this one but this is one damn fine game. This is up there for GOTY as far as i'm concerned. The gameplay is phenominal...and this game is just downright fun to play. I also read rumors that they are releasing a new version of this game in July but I still pulled the trigger. For $30 it's the best baseball game i've played in quite sometime.

Yup i'm late to the party as well. I bought it like a month ago after the EA/T2 buyout rumors. I figured I better buy it before it's too late. This game is amazing once you get past the cute characters.

It has tremendous AI logic. It subs and steals and does the little things right that both MLB 08 and MLB 2K8 still have trouble with. It also has an incredible list of games modes.

I hope if they do release another one that they take full advantage of the Wii controller this time around.

A new Power Pros coming out this summer! Bit of a surprise but a good one. I wonder what real changes have been made.

They did in Japan. If you have a "special" PS2 like me, you can play it through "alternative means". The big new features are the World Baseball Classic and Citi Field/Yankee Stadium included.

It's called Jikkyō Powerful Major League I think.
