The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread

I'm posting this from the 16th spot in line in front of my local Apple Store. T-minus 5 hours and the line here as grown to stretch almost out of the mall (150 people). Free food samples, water courtesy of Apple, and good company. The iPhone is an event.
Still worried about getting activated (thanks to corporate account), but I will have 2 iPhones by 7PM this evening.
Flame away Mac-haters. I'm having a great day.

I'm not a mac-hater, but you're still lame for waiting in line for a damn phone. Even me, and my ultimate phone addiction wouldn't do that. At least there are 15 people that are more lame than you. LOL.
BTW...you're only allowed 1 phone from what I've been reading. Or will you be able to get two at the Apple store? I think I was hearing the ATT stores would only sell one per person.

this guy tried to get one from a different source....

Went to Lenox Mall here in Atlanta at about 7:30...they were managing a line so that 10 people could go into the store at one time...I'm home with the 8 GB model 45 minutes later. I'm interested to see how easy/hard this whole activate/transfer your old number process works at home..I'll report back if anyone's interested in hearing first impressions, assuming I'm able to get it up and running.
I got it too.
The ATT I went to had only 20. WTF. Makes you wonder how scarce this thing will be. I'm hearing apple stores got anywhere from 250-1000. Just rumors at this point.

The online activation was a breeze...except I'm transferring a mobile number and, after sitting through a final ATT&T activation screen that said it would take "up to 6 minutes to complete" (seemed to me more like 10), the screen timed out and I got a message saying "Your Activation Requires Additional Time to Complete." Basically, a message saying I will get an email when my activation is complete. In the meantime, I'm apparently able to make an emergency call out (haven't tried it yet), but that seems to be it until the activation is complete. Been about an hour or so, so far...wonder if they're servers are getting slammed or if I just screwed something up? We'll see.
Did it on a wifi network. Need to try that out.dbdynsty25 wrote:Did it take 8 years to load the page?JRod wrote:I'm posting from my iphone.

Don't know what's going on. It seemed like mine was really quick. i had to abandon my corporate account, but activation was otherwise a breeze. This thing is so damn cool. I ended up getting 3, thanks to my wife and some helpful people in line. One for me, one for Dad, and one for Rally (though I should ebay that one
Typing is fine once you learn to trust the auto correction. The screen is amazing. So far, its more than I hoped for.

Just picked up mine as well. Unfortunately, I am waiting for the activation e-mail which could take up to 24 hours!?!?!?
Frustrating.
I am transferring my # from a Sprint account. Can't do a damn thing with the phone until the activation is complete.
Played with ones at the store for a bit though and they are AWESOME!

Thought I would post some impressions for everyone.
I'm going to do this backwards and address the problems first.
EDGE - Isn't slow all the time but really depends on the website. Just testing this out on a few sites. First I went to soccernet.com, a site I thought would take a long time. The stupid espn.go thing didn't help. It took less than a minute to load and was really quick. I then went to CNN is it was very slow. Could have been the part of the house that always had bad reception.
I think ATT have done something to the EDGE network. It's not instant but it's acceptable.
Keyboard - This will take a bit of time to get used to. Everyone will touch the buttons different. I was using the tip of my finger to press the buttons. For best results you have to aim at the middle of the key, some what like pressing down on the 360 sticks with the middle part of your thumb. Right now, I feel I can with two thumbs pretty quickly. Much faster than typing on a blackberry. (Though that's just me.)
Other stuff
Copying, pasting and test highlighting needs to be added. I don't know how they will do it in the context of the the controls but typing and email and wanting to delete a word, sentence, paragraph is a pain.
The sensor for rotating the screen can sometimes be activeted when the iphone is just leaning one way or the other.
Now for the stuff that is good. I'm not going to go over what everbody has read by now.
Quality - I think time will tell if there are problems with it, but the device just feels very well built. That's entirely subjective but apple has made a sleek looking device that feels great in the hand.
Simplicity - If there's one thing a regular cell phone does better it's opening the phone and dailing. To dial an entire number you have to 2-3 clicks away from that. But how many times do you dial your friends by remember their number. Other than that, the thing is just simple to use like any other apple/mac product.
Only time will tell. Can they upgrade the iPhone to address some of the software grumbles. Like having the keyboard switch to portrait view in emails not just browsing. Knowing apple they probably will knock out some really killer ideas through a software update.
I think most of the complaints outside of edge are things that people think are important because they should have this option or feature but the buyer never uses these features.
Like I said, the phone is a neat device, probably not 600 dollars neat but it's well built and does what everyone expects. Where you get your monies worth, at least in my opinion is Apple. I have a feeling that Jobs is not going to let ATT get lazy with this thing.
Lastly some girl in line (who was there for her BF) asked me why I wanted this thing. Here's what this device does that's important for me
Phone - everyone uses this
iPod - I got tired of having to carry a phone and a mp3/Ipod around.
Email - no problem, works just like a BB/Treo.
Browser - if you need to do serious work on the iPhone are you going to be outside or at a computer with broadband.
It just simplifies a lot of things for me. Now it's up to the network not to let the iPhone down.

Anything over 20 seconds is WAAAAY too long for a browser. Go to soccernet on your PC...it'll take a good 3-4 seconds to load...and with Verizon's EVDO (and Sprint's), it'll take 10-12 seconds. That's how fast it Should be. Less than a minute was really quick? Huh? That's HORRIBLE.JRod wrote:It took less than a minute to load and was really quick.
Unfortunately, it never really has a chance in the business world because of that. Had they at least used 3G, you could get some people to adopt it...but now, the network is gonna cripple that thing.JRod wrote:Now it's up to the network not to let the iPhone down.
Did I f'n time it? No. It was like 30-40 seconds.
I'm not going to pull out a stopwatch to check out the speeds. It would be fantastic while I was on a road trip to surf the net. That's ideal. It's not there yet. It would be ideal while your are at the mall or something to check prices or whatever you need to do while you aren't at home.
I would suspect given the chance that using the internet to surf on a 2-3 inch screen is not something many people want to do in extended periods. You do it to kill time at coffee houses, airports, etc. In this instances wi-fi might be available.
At other times when you need to surf, it's probably to get one peice of information and move on. In those cases even EDGE fits the bill. Is it ideal no, will it suffice yes.
I would rather have about 24 hours of battery life than have 5 minutes of surfing on 3G to leave me with 4 hours of battery life. 3G will get there and some will ATTs 3G reach.
Look it's not that bad. It's not super fantastic but I've only used broadband for the past few years so ya this isn't fast.
For non-business use, it works just fine. Now wi-fi is downright sublime.

Surfing and scrolling around with a d-pad on my Nokia is painful. Still usable though.
That is one thing the iPhone looked good at in the commercials, much smoother scrolling around and zooming in and out.
Speaking of checking prices at the store, I found an open hotspot by a SonyStyle store at the mall. They had Websense running though to block out any sites having to do with shopping. So no Amazon, no Bestbuy.com, etc.
But a lot of other Sony competitors like Panasonic and Microsoft you could access.

Actually, I'm not even that hard up to surf on the phone's actual screen...I'm more interested in the tethering to a laptop on the road so that you can achieve DSL speeds via the phone on the big screen. You simply cannot do that with Edge.JRod wrote:I would suspect given the chance that using the internet to surf on a 2-3 inch screen is not something many people want to do in extended periods. The market of people that do this is so small that they are non-factors in the iPhone market.dbdynsty25 wrote:Actually, I'm not even that hard up to surf on the phone's actual screen...I'm more interested in the tethering to a laptop on the road so that you can achieve DSL speeds via the phone on the big screen. After some time with this, this is a personal phone. Not a business phone. I don't surf websites or need broadband when I'm away. If I was to go on a business trip and need to surf the web, I would have my laptop that's already wireless and find a hotspot. Tethering is mostly something for business people and the techie.
How often do those people actually tether their PDA to their laptop? And how many people actually do this. It's not a huge amount of poeple.
iPhone is exactly what I expected.

Hey DB here is a sight you might actually enjoy. It's basically porn for smart phone techies. (Not actual porn!)

Way over my head but it is the most in-depth review of the iPhone and while I think comparing features of the phone is a little apples and oranges it is a very good, and comprehensive review.
