why is everyone putting puck friction at max and ice friction at zero?
I understand the puck friction at max part......you want the puck to not slide father on the ice than in real life. But why ice friction at max? That
slows down the skates on the ice, correct? why not just lower the speed?
Am i missing something? Maybe I don't understand the difference between lowering speed and raising ice friction? I thought the default for these was pretty good???

74's updated sliders. These ain't bad but you may need to raise the Puck Retention slider up a few notches if you're like me and get irritated by all the poke checks by the cpu...............

Here are some pro settings for ESPN 2K5. All sliders start at 0 clicks (far left) and I’ll tell you how many clicks to the right you need to. A lot of considerations went into why I set things the way I have. One, I want to be able to play a fun game of hockey that should end with fair and decent stats with-out having to play marathon games and the player can move along in his franchise/season in a relatively decent time. Two, the more drastic changes you make the more you seem to effect 3-4 other sliders that seem to be tied together which can really skew game-play and stats. These settings also play well in a cpu vs human game or a human vs human game.
5 minute periods you ask? Too short perhaps? I don’t think so, reason being the added 1 minute real-time at end of each period really add to actual play time. I wanted to have a game in a decent time frame, not too short and not overly long. These should give you good shot totals and goalie save %. The added real minute at the end of each period works well with a 5 min setting. Penalties as set here are working well, you can use the right thumbstick as a defensive move but also get called on it sometimes…seems to be a good balance.
As usual, please try 3-5 games in a franchise/season before passing any judgement, I have thick skin so any negative comments do not bother me. Lately these settings have resulted in a varying scoring range with shot range of 22-30 a game. My last 4 games (playing as the Oilers) were a 2-2 tie, 3-2 win, 4-2 loss and a 3-2 OT loss.
All the settings are same regardless if computer or human, EXCEPT the offense sliders in which I gave the cpu offense 4 more clicks. They need that extra on pro setting while the human is fine at 8. I’ll still be testing out various configurations so these might change in a week or so.

Just gave them a try Grog and I like them alot. Totally eliminating the speed burst makes things alot more challenging. I lost to Anaheim with the Flyers 2-0. Shots on goal were 31-27. I'm gonna keep them for a while.

Why eliminate the speed burst entirely?
I know many people think that speed bursts are purely a digital phenomenon, but it's clear that real athletes have an "overdrive" that they can kick into during a break-away or other intense situation. The fatigue effect should be greater when someone uses the burst, in order to simulate what would happen to a real player, but I think that there should be a sprint vs. run disctinction.
Please explain if there is something specific about NHL2k5 that you feel makes the speed burst worse, as the rest of your settings seem excellent.

You aren't kidding. I did something last night to try to cut down on SOG that really screwed up the fun-factor. I think it may have been shot accuracy. I moved that down and scoring dropped way too much and I lost a lot of rebound chances as well. I think I may go Grog's route and lower goalies a tad and play slightly shorter periods and real-time last minute.GROGtheNailer wrote:the more drastic changes you make the more you seem to effect 3-4 other sliders that seem to be tied together which can really skew game-play and stats.
I like the fact that you can set your own power play length, but it appears as if the game clock and power play time are not in sync. Am I missing something? It's not a big deal, but it is slightly annoying (ie, I get a power play with 2min left in period and the period ends but I still have 30 seconds on pp).

Speed burst can skew a lot of things and cause too many odd-man breaks, becomes to much of a free-for-all, I have no tatse for it but many do and that's cool. I'm more concerned with pacing of a game which is different from an actual skate speed. These speeds aren't bad at all but again, it's a preference, some may differ. I like to leave it to player attributes and they do have acceleration built into them anyway.
I'm finding with these settings (so far) I get a good stat base, fun games, good goal variety and the cpu will compete realisticly, games aren't a marathon either.

Grog:
Your sliders kick ass. At first, I didn't like the 0 game speed. But after a few games, I see how it works and feel quite realistic. It seems the ratings of the players and teams play more into the games with your sliders.
The only changes I made were auto shot aim -- my aging reflexes just can't control skating direction and shot direction with the same joystick -- and I made the CPU and Human offense both 12. I may adjust both to 8 if the scoring or shots get too high, but right now it's perfect. But the CPU teams don't need the offensive burst when I play.
Great job, man!
Take care,
PK

Quick follow-up:
I think the penalty time needs to be adjusted. A 2:00/0:45 creates a power play that is much too long -- a two-minute minor takes a good four-plus minutes of "game" time.
I'm going to fiddle with this and probably settle with something around 2:00/1:15. The 2:00/2:00 ratio creates a PP that's way too short. But 0:45 creates a PP that's too long and gives a big shots on goal advantage to the team that gets a tilted number of PP's during a game.
I'm still struggling just a bit with game speed of 0. I'm either going to increase it to 1 or keep it at zero and decrease the puck and ice friction a couple of clicks. Passes just don't have the snap on them that you see in the NHL, but I don't want to increase the pass speed to make one-timers unrealistically effective.
I've also turned up fighting to 1 click for all periods, not just the third. I don't mind a good scrap every game, and increasing it to 1 click pretty much assures that only brawlers or big guys are going to drop the gloves. I'm not seeing Kariya against Todd Marchant or some other foolishness with the fighting slider at 1 click.
Grog, you've done a hell of a job on these sliders for your first shot. Everything feels almost "just right." A couple of minor tweaks, and I'll have pucks nirvana. But you poured a superb foundation, man.
Thanks.
Take care,
PK

Well, thanks PK. I really like to hear your thoughts on what you like and don't like. Everyone seems to have a slider set out now-a-days so I don't know why I post mine...I would like to see all the hockey fans join and post thoughts, perhaps we can really find a sweet spot.
Hehe, fighting will have to be a matter of taste because too many of my Oilers who never should fight have foughten a lot.
I'll just go and edit my settings in this thread for any changes made right now. Btw, take off auto-aim you sissy
Getting some pretty good scores right now. Get that xbox up and running Hrudey.
Ok, now you have me wondering about this. I thought that the 2nd part of the setting is in realtime IE with 2:00 / 0:45 <-- is 45 secs realtime? If not the case then I will definitely mess with that some more.I think the penalty time needs to be adjusted. A 2:00/0:45 creates a power play that is much too long -- a two-minute minor takes a good four-plus minutes of "game" time. I forgot to update that, ice friction I have at 0 now. I agree with passing, since I have puck friction high this setting can be raised a bit but there might be more 1-timers. Maybe a click?I'm either going to increase it to 1 or keep it at zero and decrease the puck and ice friction a couple of clicks. Passes just don't have the snap on them that you see in the NHL, but I don't want to increase the pass speed to make one-timers unrealistically effective
Grog's look very good - I look forward to giving them a try.
For the first time ever I'm having fun with a Sega hockey title, now that the uber goalies are gone. I don't see any reason to shell out $50 for NHL2005 this season - thanks Sega! Now if only the f***in City of Hartford would allow the Whalers uniforms to be used it would be perfect.

Yeah, Grog, the more I tweak with your base, the more I realize you caught lightning in the proverbial bottle with your first set of sliders. They're better than any of my tweaks.
Super job, man!
Take care,
PK
