Thompson drives can eat the peanuts from my shizzle.

Post by Slumberland »

My second Xbox, a refurbished unit that's also a Thompson, has crapped out on me after a mere four months. Tech support says I'm still under warranty, miraculously, which I'm sure is bullcrap but they are probably instructed to say that when a customer utters the magic word, "Thompson". So, back to the factory, with a note attached imploring them to send it back with a Pioneer or a Samsung. The worst part is, it froze as I was attempting to save my ESPN Baseball season, which then corrupted the file. I was in August in my franchise, having played 80% of the games.

Trust me, they won't put another Thomson drive in it. They are well aware of the problem. You will more than likely get a Samsung drive which will play anything you put in it...cds, cd-r, dvd, dvd-r.

System came back today with a Philips installed. Hopefully it'll stand the test of time. Xbox support was very helpful, I must say.

I'm glad they took care of you, Seth... But honestly, they should've quit producing and refurbishing Xboxes with the Thompson drive as soon as the problems were reported...

I agree 100%!

Someone once made the case on a board somewhere that the vast majority of Xbox owners have the Thompson drive, and the Thompson problem is overblown, simply because there's such a large pool to draw from. I wonder.

Mod it.

You can install the games on a bigger HD and play tem directly from it and only use the original disk if you wanna play on XBL.

So naturally, you'll never have that problem again.

Losing my data is exactly why I bought a memory card. Occasionally I save my important data for backup purposes... damn modern day electronics....

I have a Thompson drive and bought my XBox near when MS released it, and I haven't had a single problem.

It's hit and miss-- like buying a car.

Buying a refurbished unit is not a good idea, I don't think. It increases your chances of getting a lemon.
