Re: New Steam Machine
PC ppl - so they're describing this as a console version of a pc. how will that work? can we just download games off steam, install them, and play them like we do on ps5/xbx? or is it not that simple?
Also, are the specs mentioned in the article equivelant of a high powered gaming PC or is it more like a PS5/XBX or something in between the two?
too bad they don't mention a price.

Re: New Steam Machine
The price to power ratio is always the million dollar question, but from what I gather the general processing power level of this PC will be comparable to a PS5. And yes, they are shooting for a streamlined experience where you can turn on the device, browse the Steam store with a controller, buy a game and launch it without ever seeing a traditional computer desktop. This is how the Steam Deck already functions, and the OS here will be the same. (You can also pretty much do anything a PC does by going into desktop mode, but the setup complexity can mushroom from there depending on what you're trying to do)Lancer wrote: Wed Nov 12, 2025 2:54 pm PC ppl - so they're describing this as a console version of a pc. how will that work? can we just download games off steam, install them, and play them like we do on ps5/xbx? or is it not that simple?

Of this new stuff unveiled, I will probably buy a Steam controller to use with the 'couch pc' I already have. The VR headset is a maybe for me, and the Steam Machine PC is probably a no because I already have a 'couch pc' that will be more powerful than this PC.

everyone is saying they have upstaged the next xbox. we'll have to wait and see what the new xbox is going to be similar to this.Naples39 wrote: Wed Nov 12, 2025 3:52 pmThe price to power ratio is always the million dollar question, but from what I gather the general processing power level of this PC will be comparable to a PS5. so if this is as powerful as ps5, does that mean it will play all PC games that ppl play on high end gaming pc's? or does that mean some pc games won't be on this system?
the video also said their new controller will never encounter stick drift.
-added- this looks great but the only thing for me missing is sports titles. Two of my fav titles MLB THE SHOW and CFB are still not on PC. If they do get on PC, then next gen maybe this is the way to go.
Re: New Steam Machine
Basically it will play every PC game, but it won't be powerful enough to run the most demanding new games at high res (more than 1080) and high frame rates (higher than 60) the way hard core PC gamers like to do. Of course, neither can the PS5.
As you pointed out, some sports games don't come to PC so you'll be out of luck there, but the real achilles heel of this product is that it runs on Linux, not Windows. For most uses this doesn't matter (and actually gives a performance boost by removing unnecessary Windows bloat), but it does matter for online games, because some online games have anti-cheat software embedded that only works on Windows PCs. You won't be able to play those games online on this Steam PC.

Re: New Steam Machine
Sure sounds like it's going to cost north of $700. No thanks. Linus from Tech Tips said it should be $500 based on the specs and the Steam people in the room got real quiet.
