Meta Quest 3S

Post by JOZ »

My wife and daughter got this for me for an early Christmas present. VR wasn't on my radar at all until I just happened on a YouTube video for Real VR fishing. Then saw a video for the game Onward and I became very interested. We passed the Quest 3s in a store and I just mentioned what I had seen and they surprised me with it last week.

Here are the games I have and my impressions

Real VR Fishing- Haven't played a lot, but what I have played is very good. Scenery is photo realistic and the way you cast, reel, and fight fish is very well done. Very immersive and the fish you catch are unbelievably realistic looking.

Split Second and Tactical Assault VR- Got these two for the same price as Onward. Based on what I read these were just as good. Split Second is like a smaller VR version of Ready or Not for the PC. Tactical Assault VR is similar but a more military scale.. Both are realistic shooters that are very good. The immersion factor is off the charts. Peeking around corners and slowly opening doors with your gun in hand is like nothing else I have experienced in gaming

Golf+. I knew nothing about this game but saw it had great reviews and wanted something different. I figured it was an ok golf game with some kind of shortcuts or gimmicks. I was wrong. This game is unbelievable. You play realistic golf. Every shot. Even the putting is spot on. I am amazed that I had never heard of this given how good it is. I have played at a XGolf (Golf simulator) and I would take this over that. It has easily taken up the majority of my play time this week.

It came with Batman Arkham Shadows, First Encounters, and First Hand. The only one I have played of these is just a little bit of First Hand. It is more of an interactive experience. It looked very good and immersive.

There is also the Horizon Worlds. Which seems to be a more of a social thing. It is a bunch of different areas/games created by companies and the community. I have tried a just a few of these and while there may be a bit a fun to be had with some worlds, I don't see myself spending much time with this.

Overall I am super happy with it. The experiences you get with this thing are unlike anything else. VR has come a long way since the Samsung Gear VR I had like 8-10 years ago. Hell, the set with Golf+ is probably worth the price to me. I did go ahead and get one of the head straps with the extra battery off Amazon. It definitely runs through the battery it comes with pretty quick.

Check out Eleven Table Tennis. You can play in mixed reality as well. Feels like a real ping pong table and the physics are great.

Thrill of the fight. The new one is out, but has quite a few issues to be ironed out. The first one is single player only and is an incredible work out. I don't know how many boxers there are, but you can also play in mixed reality. Pretty wild to see a big dude in your room ready to box you!

Walkabout Mini Golf. One of the most popular VR titles out there. The developers just keep adding new courses almost monthly. Every course is themed. Really an impressive title.

If you get in to Golf +, they do sell attachments that make the experience feel even more realistic. And Top Golf is also included in this game.

Moss 1 and Moss 2 are exceptional platform games.

There's also some really cool exercise titles if that's your thing.

Download xStadium. Can sit courtside at a live NBA game. You can check the schedule for games. I believe it's only one game a week.

Big Screen is pretty damn impressive. People are always hosting rooms that include the top sporting events. It's like sitting in a movie theater with friends and just taking in the games. There's also people hosting movies, tv shows, having debates, playing karaoke, etc.

If you find yourself really enjoying the 3S, maybe consider upgrading to the 3. I'm using that one and from what I heard, it's a fairly significant upgrade in terms of visuals.

One other piece of advice. Take your time adjusting to the games. Pick out titles that have a very moderate comfort level. It's very easy to get VR sickness if you play the wrong game. It takes time to get your VR legs. And don't play too long for the first several days.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I actually tried out Eleven Table Tennis (15 minute free trial). Unbelievably good. It's crazy to me how accurate it is and gives you that feeling of real ping pong. I will definitely be getting this.

Also tried a 30 minute trial of Moss today. Beautiful game that's very well done. Again, I will probably be picking that up to at some point.

Every "must have" list I have seen has Walkabout mini golf, so I will pick that up sometime too.

I've heard good things about Thrill of the Fight. I just have to ask myself do I want to work out while playing games 😁

I do have Big screen, but haven't done much with it. I will have to try out Xstadium, even though I haven't had much interest in the NBA in years.

I'm usually OK with VR games as long as there isn't fast jerky movement. So roller coaster and flying games are out.

The good thing is that everything I have tried so far has exceeded my expectations. I'm hoping the 3S sells well at the $300 price point so the development of VR continues to grow.

Have either of you done the multiplayer golf+ with a friend? Can you talk to each other while you’re playing? If so I’m getting that immediately to play with my old golf friends from across the country as I don’t get out much anymore.

I have not done it myself, but yes you can. I believe you can play with up to 4 players and you can talk with everyone.

Need to investigate this more. Sounds awesome. Checked out a few YouTube videos and it looks like a blast.

Hi All, I will put in a big plug here for Walk About Mini Golf. You can play and talk real time with all players and it is probably one of the easiest of all the multiplayer Quest games to connect with friends. My brothers and I have been using it as a virtual hang out and it is fantastic. The physics, challenge, replayabilty is far beyond the cost. I have had three versions of VR headsets from original Oculus CV1 to the Quest 3 and it's the main game I have continued to play. The developers are fantastic and have just kept adding to the game and all the DLC is easily worth the price. When playing with friends, only one person even needs to own the DLC for everyone to be able to play. I think it just means those that don't own it can't acquire the hidden balls and custom clubs for that course. It's definitely my most played non racing game for the last few years. If anyone picks it up, I would be glad to play some games if anyone wants to try out the DLC before buying. It's also one of the few VR games I can still play for any length of time without getting motion sickness, unless I go into fly mode. :D Anyway, right now VR is really coming into it's own and has brought me back into gaming after being on break for awhile. Also, with Quest 3/3S you can now play Half-Life 2 in VR as well as many other games that have been modded to VR (Doom, Quake, etc.). I own basically all the major VR releases over the last few years, but have only been able to play them in little bits as I have developed motion sickness in my old age. But if you have any questions about any VR games, going back the last 5 years or so, I could probably give at least a "tjungin it" level review. Golf+ is also great, but I suck at real and virtual golf, and takes little more time commitment than what I have these days, but it falls into the same category as Walk About, in that the developers have continued to update it and add value beyond just the DLC, which is also great. Real VR Fishing also thumbs up for chllin'/hangout and has great development team.

PS - I have not delved into any of these in depth yet, but the mixed reality with Quest 3/3s is becoming much more than just a gimmick. Shattered, Spatial Ops, Last Stand, Home Invasion, are all pretty cool!

PPS - One big tip, don't ever pay full price for a game in the Quest store. They have a pretty cool referral and/or content creator program to where you should almost always be able to find a 10% to sometimes even 50% discount for most games, even on release day. Sometimes just takes a little searching to find a code that still works, or just have a friend here who has already purchased a game you want and can send you a referral link. Both sides then benefit. Below are some links and videos by content creators that explain it and have tried to make an easier way to link and get the discounts.

As stated above, Walkabout Mini Golf is the crown jewel and should be everyone's first VR purchase. It's that impressive of a game.

Speaking of Golf, the creators of Hot Shots Golf put out a game not too long ago called Ultimate Swing Golf. It plays very much like Hot Shots, with the caddie and everything. Definitely more arcade than Golf +. They've had some 50 percent off discounts lately for the game.

Home Invasion is indeed very cool. If you have the space, like say in a basement, you can set the boundaries and you'll have these monsters coming through the doors, windows, etc.

There's a couple pretty cool tennis games that are out there. You really do feel like you're on the tennis court. I toy around with First Person Tennis and you can practice your ground strokes or get in to a match.

Racket Club is a mix between Pickleball, Tennis, and Racquetball. Fun but a rather exhausting game.

NFL Pro Era is pretty damn cool. You assume the role of a QB. They do have all the NFL Teams. It works pretty well. It's just neat to feel like you're in a stadium on the football field.

Any pinball fans like myself? Pinball FX2 is really quite fun. Like having a virtual pinball machine in your home. And more tables are on the way according to the developers.

Other games I would recommend that are comfortable to play are Zombieland, Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Superhot, Angry Birds, Max Mustard. The list really goes on and on. There's so many titles on the store and for the most part, everything is reasonably priced.

Thanks big time for the tip and links for the discounts DChaps!!

I went ahead and got Walkabout Mini Golf, Eleven Table Tennis, and Magical Pool with a 20% discount on each.

So what's the trick to being able to run Half Life 2 or Doom in VR? I'm hoping it is an old enough game that my laptop can run it, if that is what it takes

One of the things I was looking forward to going in to VR was Skyrim VR. Unfortunately it looks like my laptop does not have enough video memory to run it. Half Life Alyx would have been nice too.

So, it is possible to use cloud-pc's and Virtual Desktop to play PCVR games like Half-Life: Alyx and Skyrim VR as long as you have fast internet/wifi. Here is a video link below that will show one way to do this. Also, there have been rumors that Meta is going to have this coming as a native subscription type option.

There is a 3S under my tree. Wife clearly got the hint with all of the YouTube golf+ videos I’ve been watching. lol.

I have to get some prescription lenses I think because I’ve heard it doesn’t work great with glasses and I’m blind as sh*t so I need something.

Anyone have any recommendations for a bigger battery pack, presumably it’ll be part of a new headset thing, but not sure what’s recommended. Already got a DeadEye VR coming for golf+ as that is the main reason I want this system. I don’t really care about much else but the gold stuff so I feel the regular 3 is probably over kill for my first device. Baby steps.

I got this headset during Cyber Monday on Amazon and it has been very good for me.

https://a.co/d/850dFIg

I got a different golf club attachment than the Deadeye, but had a heck of a time adjusting it so I quit for a bit. I kept getting huge slices and couldn't seem to dial it in. I will give it another try this week.

Everything that I have played so far has been such a good experience. I haven't even tried Batman yet, which from what I have read is the cream of the crop.

I'm in the middle of Jedi Outcast now and it has been awesome. Crazy how a 20 year old decent game can become this cool just making it VR. I hope they continue modding older 3d games to VR.

I believe I got my lenses through Zenni Optical online. No problems and the lenses work great. Such a nicer experience than having to wear glasses with the headset.

Can't answer your question regarding the battery pack. I usually don't play more than 30-45 minutes at any one time.

Be sure to check out Eleven Tennis and Walkabout. Enjoy!

Forgot to mention that the Quest has a ton of free trials. They are very willing to let you try a game out for 15-20 minutes before purchase.

Definitely try out First Encounters. Should come with the headset.

Copied from Reddit...

We're seeing numerous reports across the subreddit and other communities of an issue affecting some Quest headsets with all the new users getting a Quest 2/3/3s for the Holidays. While it's not affecting all devices, there are enough cases to warrant concern, especially for new Christmas Quest owners.

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

Some headsets are encountering a critical error after updating

The error message states "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted"

Best guess the update image isn't applying right? There's no solid answer.

Not all devices are affected (some updates are completing normally) (In fact, the mod posting this setup one today)

CURRENT RISKS:

New headsets will automatically attempt to update, and cause this.

Factory resets are NOT fixing the issue and may make things worse

Some devices become completely unresponsive

RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONS:

If possible, delay turning on new Quest headsets

Hold off on updates if your Quest is working and active.

Do NOT attempt factory resets if you encounter issues (specifically with black screen)

If you see your device got stuck in this loop, contact Meta through the [Meta Quest Help Center](https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/)

For Meta's forum discussing this: [Community Forums Discussion](https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/T ... -p/1273736)

We'll update as more information becomes available. If you've successfully updated today, you're likely fine - but please share your experiences in the comments.

I'll update this as we see more updates.

Thanks Dan...will get mine through Zenni optical as well since that is basically what Meta is advertising in it's box anyway.

Haven't had any issues w/ updating my headset...so that's good.

Been having a great time with Golf+, and messed around in Walkabout but couldn't get my golf attachment to work right with it so turned it off. Will mess with that later. I got the Yoges Adjustable attachment for around $40...and while it works pretty good being a 90 degree angle, it is a bit light for me and it doesn't have a built in Golf+ setup...so I might try the DeadEyeVR Elite Mini (the regular size one is too big for my areas to play in)...since it's got more weight adjustments. BUT it's $100. So we'll see.

BTW, if anyone needs a referral, just hit me up, I can get you a code and then we both get $60 to the Quest store. I did it with my buddies referral...easy 60 bucks.

I'll check and see which golf attachment I have. Might be willing to sell it a pretty big discount. I've had some problems getting it lined up correctly, but I've only tried a few times. I don't bother to use it in Walkabout as the controller works just fine.

Would definitely be interested in the referral. How exactly does it work?

Pretty sure it has to be on a "new" headset within the last 7 days. It also has to be unattached to your account. So maybe that's the way around it, but you have to completely wipe your device and start over to get it. Luckily I found that out after only like an hour of messing w/ my new device so it wasn't a big deal to wipe and start over.

Ah, no worries. Thanks anyways. It's pretty commonplace to be able to find discount codes for pretty much any game.

Don't forget to check out xStadium. I believe it's a free download. You can sit courtside at a NBA game. Of course, the resolution could be better, but it's definitely still pretty nice.

I gotta back in to Golf +. I hop on there and play the challenge modes every now and then.

Just picked up Space Pirate Training, which I guess has been out for a few years. But it's on sale and has gotten great reviews. I'm a sucker for a sale prices on the Meta store.

Almost forgot to mention. A number of people have suggested running the Quest Games Optimizer for Golf +. Supposedly, it will really enhance the clarity in the game. It does drain the battery faster, but is worth it.

I'll check it out...I've heard about it...just haven't installed it yet. XStadium is pretty sick.

Just ordered my Zenni lenses...they are the cheapest out there it seems, but free shipping takes 7-14 business days. No biggie I guess, since I'll be traveling the next week. I'll live w/ the glasses for now.

You'll definitely appreciate the lenses. I had a PSVR2 for a short time and it was extremely uncomfortable with glasses. Quest 3 is better with glasses in comparison. The only other thing you may want to invest in is a new head strap. The majority of owners don't like the stock strap at all. I found it to be fine, but got a new one anyways, and it does feel more comfortable. Thankfully, they're not too expensive.

Yeah, I picked up a Yoges Battery one for like $20 before Xmas and it works great, tho I hate how the USB charging cable isn't integrated so I'll probably get the Kiwi Designs one that is more hidden. But yeah, def more comfortable.

Quest Game Optimizer is only $6 dollars right now. This along with Sidequest are worth the work to get installed. The Team Beef mods are great.

I adjusted all my clubs on Golf+ today for my club attachment. I had to turn all my clubs except my wedges to 100% draw and 60% pull just to keep from slicing. Also put power assistance to 100%. Definitely better now but still have a bit to work on. Not sure why I had to make such drastic changes.
