So bummed about this. Transcended his Ray Charles-disciple early days to become one of music's great interpreters.
It's interesting because despite his singular style, he was able to wring out nuances in a song that made you sit up and say, "That's what the songwriter was after!" Sometimes he did so more effectively than the songwriter's version itself.
He also had an absolutely unerring ear for a great song and didn't care where it came from. His early career has gotten him justifiably enshrined in the classic rock pantheon. In his completely off the radar late career he often overcame the overly-slick production of his records to deliver stunning versions of songs by Prince, John Hiatt, REM, INXS and other unexpected sources. He was brilliant.
The way he transforms this song by moving from Stipe's haunting, hymnal approach to a passionate, fiery sermon. That's a gift right there.
