This is a GREAT point that hasn't been made here. Is MS banking on a strategy that families still gather around their television like it's the pot-belly stove in the Wilder's cabin in "Little House in the Prairie?"

My kids only watch TV for live sports. They consume all other video content on their iPad, iPod or phone. I watch a lot of streaming and downloaded video on my laptop.

The days in which the TV is the epicenter of family entertainment are coming to a rapid end.

Not in this house. It's not so old fashioned as you might think. I don't let my kids tether their brains to a portable screen, and we watch tv together on a regular basis. They have their iWhatevers and all that, but there's a time and a place for that.

I think they know that. Seriously - have you seen most of their marketing for the XB1? The stuff I see is typically younger, single people using it as a convenient one stop shop for things like watching sports and Skyping, playing a game and then jumping quickly to Netflix, etc.

Even in my situation where we definitely don't have "family time" around the TV, the XB1 is a great and useful addition to my main setup. I have given many examples of how (up to this point at least) it's enhanced my experience. Even if you never plug a live TV into it, the integration of the apps and games and home screen with voice commands of Kinect and camera features for Skype are quite useful for a lot of people that use their console to consume different types of media.

I watch about 5 hours of live TV a week if that. But the convenience for me of playing a game and then just saying "Xbox go to NBC" to cheek in on the SNF game is awesome. Or watching a Netflix show with my wife and when she gets up to do whatever it is that wives do - I can say "Xbox Pause" without scrabbling for the remote, and then say "Go to Forza Motorsport 5" play a quick race, say "Xbox go to Netflix...play" and resume right where we left off is very neat as well. Or getting a Skype call when the TV is on and just saying "Xbox Answer".

Of course all these things can be done via a remote, but it's either the new car smell that has pulled me in or it's truly just easy and fast and neat. I think this stuff would appeal to a pretty large market. I am picturing a lot of successful research done around 25-35 year old males who have not settled down yet, no kids, apartment is becoming a bit more adult with a decent TV and an entertainment center, not caring about headphones or throwing the console in a bag to bring to grandmas house, Skype a lot with their GF or buddies who are now scattered throughout the country after getting jobs, use a lot of Hulu and Netflix, already have a decent crew of online gamers from their XB360 days, comfortable with and interested in emerging tech, etc, etc... This is on top of the 35-40 something married foggies like me who loved their 360 and are interested in the XB1's capabilities.

Maybe research has been done, but I'm not sure about successful. Microsoft has missed the mark recently more times than not with disappointing results with Windows 8, Surface, Windows Phone, Xbox One initial policies, etc. Is a $500 non-upgradeable immobile machine that is supposed to last 7-10 years and is twice the size of a VCR the answer? Maybe it is...I bought one. :)

Good points again. I guess I meant "successful research" as in internal success - i.e. MS felt confident in their findings. Successful results is another thing.

I'd take the Windows Phone and the Surface over anything on the market, so that's an opinion. And I, for one, was fine with the original policies of the XB1. Most of the resistance was white noise more than informed anything. The results of the sales may be disappointing, but the quality of the aforementioned stuff is anything but.

They're swinging for the fences hoping to at least double the number of 360 units shipped.

But they believe they can't do that with a game-centric product. So they looked at integrating TV some how. Not a bad bet. Despite declining ratings people still talk a lot about TV. Hell you get TV discussions in a lot of podcasts which are about something else.

I think they were hoping for a disruptive model but what they ended up with is kind of an overlay over cable TV. Meanwhile, cable TV lost subscribers this year. Not sure if cutting the cord is accelerating or people just got fed up with paying a lot for TV.

Maybe in the next generation, if there is one, they will be able to integrate IPTV or some new model for delivery of video programming.

Kinda cool if you were planning on purchasing something from PSN:

Get $10 free if you plug in $50 from PayPal.

Thanks for all of the really helpful input, everyone. It is tough because I think both systems have a lot to offer. I am going to stick with my initial instincts and get a PS4. The XB1 integration stuff sounds very cool, but that's not going to be as useful to me if I'm on my other TV instead of my home theater one. Plus I know for a fact that I will play The Show a ton and that will help if the console libraries are still a little bare in the next few months.

The PC question is still there, too, but that's probably a little out of the price range at this point. I looked into building my own rig but I'm just not that handy, nor do I want to be bothered, to be honest.

Now I just have to find a PS4!

Honestly, at this moment, I'm not sure there's a really compelling game on the PS4.

Especially if you've played games released in the last year for the PS3 or 360.

My 6 and 10-year-old daughters are completely smitten with Zoo Tycoon. The animal interaction is pretty cool and they look amazing. The little one plays on sandbox, but the older one is totally engaged by the management stuff as well. Getting way more out of this one than I expected.

My 11-year old couldn't give a crap about Zoo Tycoon.

My 45-year old wife, on the other hand, is addicted. I have to give up Forza time so she can feed some freaking antelopes.

1. Escaping from the update, installation and other related headaches of PC gaming is among the most liberating things one can do with one's gaming time. Do not waste bits on the internet telling me "how much better it is now," either. I've been gaming on PC's since forever and I've heard that song and dance for at least 20 years.

Gaming PC's are like dating a girl you've been told is crazy. You're sure everyone exaggerated the trouble and it'll be different this time. First few dates are great and you're convinced you've entered a brave, new world with the girl. 8 months later you can't find drivers that will let you run her at optimal resolutions and you already get envious of the guy down the hall who's running his girlfriend at 60FPS... or something like that. Congrats, you're back in the girlfriend market.

2. Many of us game on our primary TV's in a living space shared with other non-geek humans. I'd be more likely to display a plaster cast of Jimmy Page's pecker as coffee table decor than put a gaming PC with 43 cooling fans in my family room.

3. By all means, go PC and play with upwards of 4 other people here at DSP.

Hey, if this thing saves me even one trip to the real zoo, I'm all for it. Hate zoos. They combine three of my least favorite things: aimless walking, animals and other people. You think I've got a problem with PC's? Don't get me started on the freaking zoo! :)

Nice, Macca. :)

To be accurate that doll would need a crease on its forehead from beating it on the desk over the course of a lifetime of freeing up RAM, creating boot discs, editing autoexec.bat files, upgrading video cards, updating drivers, downloading optimized settings, figuring out inscrutable system specs, suffering through BSoD, and reading page after endless page of forums promising fixes for all of the above.

OMG...now I know why we feel the same way. I still freely play and upgrade my PC, but there's a ton to be said for consoles.

Autoexec.bat and HIMEM.SYS, baby! I need more memory to run that US Navy Seals on my 386 SX and 2MB of RAM!

Juggling those files and boot disks killed me. Thanks for the blast from the past, holy crap.

Feb. - Theirf, Raymand Legend, Lego Movie Game
March - Infamous and Drive Vluc

Yep, I hit up Gamestop this past weekend because I already have all of the current games available on both consoles. I asked when the next wave of releases was, he said there wasn't anything worthwhile until Feb/Mar.

At least I have time to play all of the ones that I collected in the past month!

I bought a 386 SX to play the original Wing Commander. My first "PC" after years going from a Timex Sinclair 1000, TRS-80 Color Computer, TI-99 4A, Commodore 64, Atari 1040 ST, and finally the Amiga. Then I took a few years off gaming to DJ before seeing Wing Commander and that Packard Bell 386 SX and coming back to computer gaming.

I have experienced everything Rob mentions and even though I have a high end gaming PC I only use it for Blizzard titles and a few games I bought on Steam sales. No matter how much better gaming on a PC has gotten there are still the occasional driver issues, crashes, stutters, and what not. I always to prefer to play on a console when I can.

To stay on topic, even though I am loving my XB1 I will be forced to buy a PS4 if the Diablo III expansion stays exclusive to PS4 and PC. Come on Blizzard, announce it for XB1 as well.
