Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
John,
That's the big question on the Fanatec stuff. For what it's worth, I got Need for Speed on PS4 because I thought my wheels would work with it. They don't.
Turns out that it's up to each individual game manufacturer what they want to allow on PS4, not the system itself. There's a greater chance of stuff working on PS4 than XBox One, though. But even my T500RS for PS3 didn't work on NFS, so it appears to be up to developers more than anything else.

Very excited for some pinball! See ya on the leader boards!
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I have reached this understanding as well... it's up to the game developer as to whether or not support for current-gen hardware will be built into the game. At least with the PS4, the developer has the option to do so. I don't know how much trouble it will be for developers to do this, but I don't get the impression that they would have to have a particular wheel in mind to support current-gen wheels. None of the racing games I currently play on my PS3 and XBox 360 show "Fanatec Porsche 911 GT2" as a preset option in any of the control menus. At best it comes up under "Other". With that in mind, I'm thinking all they have to do is support the present protocols that the PS3 supports for all wheels which currently work with it.TCrouch wrote:Turns out that it's up to each individual game manufacturer what they want to allow on PS4, not the system itself. If I had room for another wheel, I'd probably go the XBox One / Thrustmaster TX route as you have done. After watching that Inside Sim Racing video you linked with Shaun and Darin have a go at Forza 5 using the Thrustmaster, I could see that they were genuinely mesmerized by it! It just wouldn't be practical in my rec room setup. My Playseat Evolution cockpit already presents an awkward obstacle in the room and leaves no space for something else.
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Yeah, I'm looking forward to giving it a run tonight, but I have it set up on an XL21 wheel stand, which has been fabulous to me so far. I have 2 of them, one with my CSR Elite and the other with a T500RS--that one will be getting replaced by the TX tonight.
That's one thing I loved about the CSR Elite (and I thought the 911 did this too?) is PS3 mode basically turns it into a G25. So the game treats it as a G25, and the wheel has settings like a G25. That's what I do with my Elite with any non-supported game is put it in PS3 mode. Works for me when a game supports the Logitechs as default.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
So Mrs. Brando informed me that she wanted to get me a console for Christmas (or the promise of one if unavailable until later). I was a bit surprised by this, so I tried to figure out which one I wanted. After some Seinfeld-ian montage reflection, I came to the tentative conclusion that the PS4 would be for me. But then I read Zeppo's great impressions of the XBONE. and of course found the XBONE available in two places while the PS4 was still sold out. And I am worried about buyer's remorse.
My logic for PS4 is:
-- Naughty Dog games were by far my favorite of the last generation. All three Uncharted titles and especially The Last of Us really blew me away.
-- The Show on this generation is very appealing to me.
-- I just don't play online as much as I used to. I am still drawn a lot to narrative games.
-- Console will go on my secondary TV, so I probably will not use my console for much other than gaming.
The cons:
-- When I do play online, I love XBL.
-- I have been a very happy XBox gamer for two generations. Loved the controller, liked the interface, just all around enjoyed the last two systems.
-- Worried not as many DSP folks on PSN.
For those of you with both, any preferences at this point? If I buy this, I'm likely going to have just this console for the foreseeable future, until there's a price cut.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Seems like we're making a habit out of reposting the same question over and over lately. It's been beaten to death in this thread already. Some of us (db and myself, for the most part) have both and greatly prefer the PS4. Like you, we've been XBox guys until this generation.
I'll quit speaking for DB and just say that for myself, the XBox One interface still irritates me to no end. Sure, it's just "take the time to learn it", but much like Windows, they're forcing changes that they claim we need and want down our throats. I want it to play games, not be locked into all of this extra crap and an interface that's clunky as hell without voice commands. Some of the multi-tasking stuff is neat, but it's not $100 more neat.
For pure gaming, I don't see how anybody could say the XB1 is $100 better. The PS4 launch games look noticeably better on identical TV's running side by side than the XB1 versions, but first party or exclusive games on the XB1 look marvelous.
That being said, I traded in copies of XB1 games I had on PS4, and bought my most recent games on PS4. So to me, PS4 is a clear cut winner. But some people will say that it's me having problems with simple things, or not taking time to learn an interface, etc. In my opinion, it's just clunky and completely unfinished. It's not that I don't want to learn it, it's that it's unnecessarily cumbersome.
So if you go XB1, that's great. Enjoy it. I'm sure you will. If that's all I had, I would probably just deal with what it had myself and not think twice. But after seeing both in action for some time, there's no way I'd personally recommend it over the PS4.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
PS4 all day if I could only have one. The software is just so much faster and easy to use. Yes, it doesn't do some of the stuff the XB1 does (notably for me, Skype and the fitness apps), but those are secondary to me (and it sounds like to you). The PS4 controller is superior to the XB1 controller and more similar to the 360 in terms of build and feel in hand.Brando70 wrote:So Mrs. Brando informed me that she wanted to get me a console for Christmas (or the promise of one if unavailable until later). Pretty sure it's all been beaten to death so I don't want to sound fanboy-ish, but as someone who purchased both, I believe myself and Terry both are in the pro-PS4 camp if we could only have one. And I am not sure who else has both besides us.
Edit: terry can speak for me too, lol
Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
That's funny
One side-topic that the PS4 actually did to me...I never played my PS3 at all because I hated that freaking controller. Well, the DS4 works on the PS3 when you tether it with a cable. Hmm...so I took my old POS 6GB PS3 that I've had for years, and swapped out the HD to a 500GB one. Now I'm playing through Infamous and a lot of PS3 games again because that DS4 is so superior to the DS3 it's not even funny.
Only irritation with it is that the "PS" button doesn't work. But the "share" button is select, the options is Start, and the controls work great. Funny how fun it is to play a PS3 game with a good controller. I TRIED to play Uncharted 3 before I got the PS4, and hated it. Now that I have a controller that feels good, the sticks aren't so sloppy, etc., I can get head shots and lay waste to the levels. It's just amazing how much better the DS4 is than the DS3.

Never even thought about doing that. Guess I shouldn't have sold my PS3. Ah well. I played through all of those games already, even with the sh*tty controller. That's how good Sony's exclusives are. Can't wait for the next gen versions.TCrouch wrote:That's funny![]()

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Brando,
It's true that the ratio among DSP'ers online with Xbox beats the heck out of us that were on the PS3. If you don't care about the Kinect and all media integration that comes with it and you want to just game, the choice is clear: Go with Sony. I had an ecological history with games like Fifa, Madden, Ghosts and BF4 and therefore it was a no brainer to upgrade those games with Xbox for the extra $10 dollars. Playing online with the PS4 is much improved and don't forget that you will also have to pay for its online features. If you like free games, subscribing to Plus is a great deal for the titles that they are throwing away. The Vita is also a great companion.
I own both consoles too, and when it comes to gaming, the Xbone is a great machine too. But as I previously stated, I am NOT a graphics whore nor do I care that the PS4 is a slightly more powerful machine. Go with your instincts. Do you game online as much as before? There's $100 difference even though it's a gift from the Mrs. Not to mention the title games that you mentioned from Naughty Dog and MLB. The controller is much improved over the DS3 where you can really feel the triggers now and sits very comfortably in your hands.
Based on your pros and cons, I think that the PS4 will suit your needs more.

As a very happy Xbox One owner...
I'll also recommend a PS4. Unless you really want a racing sim early to play (like me), I don't think the One is worth the extra $100.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Just echoing what has been said. Some would say I've been overly pro Xbox but if I had to get rid of one it would be the XB1 at this point. I might be crazy but I could see that changing, there is much more room for advanced and cool stuff with the XB1 but for now I play my PS4 roughly 95% of the time. I only use the XB1 for Skype and fitness. To be fair the only game I own is Dead Rising 3 and that is just not catching my attention.
However I still have not played a single game online with the PS4, hell I have 2 people on my friends list.

I've added a lot of OS'ers to my friends list recently. There's a pretty lengthy thread and I've found the majority of them are great guys.

I work in the software biz, so seeing where the xb1 goes is fascinating to me. I get the ps4 has better specs, but I've yet to play Forza, NBA 2k or (yes) Peggie and wonder if I'm getting screwed on "teraflops". Just not a thing I care about.

Brando,
Ask for GTX 780 and then get a new gaming PC. Steam + Big Picture mode destroys both of these machines.

PC fanboy stupidity aside (though I'm only half joking) , sounds like you want a PS4. You have our blessing, son.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
I'm gonna weigh in here and reiterate what most of the reviewers are saying. I truly think it all comes down to the following two things:
- Exclusive Games
- What your friends/community is playing on
I think the controller has now become a moot point with the DS4 being awesome and the XB1 controller staying awesome.
I tend to think that the XB1 has the games advantage out of the gate with Forza, DR3, Ryse, Powerstar Golf and Peggle. Those appeal more to me than any PS4 exclusive - and XB1 exclusives will continue to appeal more to me down the road with games like Titanfall, Project Spark, Sunset Overdrive, Halo, etc... I also am not worried one bit about the graphical difference in the cross-platform launch titles. For some they're significant, for others they are barely distinguishable and most probably don't care. I also believe that we will see cross-platform games get closer in graphics rather than further apart as dev's gain more experience with the XB1 (I know others here disagree with that). The added "gimmicky" media features and Kinect stuff is just icing on the cake with the XB1 for my needs and I am really enjoying them.
That said - It appears that here at DSP we are going to be fairly evenly split between the two consoles so when I see people post that they want a simple gaming machine for a dedicated game TV and LOVE games like MLB: The Show and Uncharted, I think it's absolutely a no brainer to go with the PS4.

1. Escaping from the update, installation and other related headaches of PC gaming is among the most liberating things one can do with one's gaming time. Do not waste bits on the internet telling me "how much better it is now," either. I've been gaming on PC's since forever and I've heard that song and dance for at least 20 years.
Gaming PC's are like dating a girl you've been told is crazy. You're sure everyone exaggerated the trouble and it'll be different this time. First few dates are great and you're convinced you've entered a brave, new world with the girl. 8 months later you can't find drivers that will let you run her at optimal resolutions and you already get envious of the guy down the hall who's running his girlfriend at 60FPS... or something like that. Congrats, you're back in the girlfriend market.
2. Many of us game on our primary TV's in a living space shared with other non-geek humans. I'd be more likely to display a plaster cast of Jimmy Page's pecker as coffee table decor than put a gaming PC with 43 cooling fans in my family room.
3. By all means, go PC and play with upwards of 4 other people here at DSP.
What I'm saying is it's definitely apples-and-oranges.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
Yeah, I have a PS4 and I've never thought about "teraflops" or anything like that. But I have thought about how nice it is to plug in headphones into the controller and not bother my wife while I'm playing. How it fits nicely on a small stand next to my bedroom TV. I have thought about how convenient it was to throw it and a power cord in a small bag and take it along with us to grandma's house and how easy it was to move down to the family room to hook up to a TV for a party we held this weekend. I've thought about how great it is to play remotely on Vita. I have thought about how I was able to purchase a PS4 and a Vita for only $69 more than a Xbone and that's even before the rumored bundles that drop that cost even further.greggsand wrote:I work in the software biz, so seeing where the xb1 goes is fascinating to me. I have an Xbone ready to hook up on December 25th and I'm looking forward to it but the limitations are when that puppy gets setup in the basement in the man cave it's not going anywhere. It's too big and bulky to move around with the power brick and with Kinect and when I get it setup for TV and hooked up to the receiver it's going to become a permanent fixture of one of many rooms in the house. It's the only place I will be able to play it. I'm not going to be able to play Xbone games in bed or on a couch in another part of the house or even remotely on the porch, deck, or at the kitchen table. I'm not going to be able to play Xbone games if someone else wants to watch something on that TV. Xbox One is going to control my "living room" but in the day when I'm watching just as much entertainment on my Ipad or streaming in the Den on my PC while I'm working from home I'm just not sure how important that is going to be. I'm just rarely in one room for very long. But as an Xbone owner and a gamer I certainly want Microsoft to continue to try to be innovative...but the thought of the entire family being entertained in one room seems old fashioned to me.

Great points! If my family situation was different I could see the XB1 not being as appealing to me. Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
It's a good point on the exclusive games, for sure. I haven't played Killzone nearly enough to go "wow, this is the best EVARRRR", and Knack is a good time with my kids, but it's not a system seller.
Forza is a world-beater, and DR3 is an excellent diversion for short spans of time. Ryse is one of the best looking games I've ever seen (said that before, I know), so the XB1 has those showcase pieces that the PS4 seems to be missing, other than NBA2K14.
That's sort of why I ended up having to get both, because I know for damned sure I'd be freaking out whenever Last of Us or the next Uncharted or Infamous hits the PS4. Sony has some excellent exclusives, and some would argue the best in the biz. I mentioned that to my wife recently--the only reason I had a PS3 before was for the exclusives. And damn near every time I'd finish one, I'd just go "man, their exclusives are freaking incredible". They've really set the bar high on the exclusive titles.
They just didn't have any with launch, which allows the XB1 to jump way out front on the exclusive launch titles.

Re: XBox One AND PS4 Discussion
This is a GREAT point that hasn't been made here. Is MS banking on a strategy that families still gather around their television like it's the pot-belly stove in the Wilder's cabin in "Little House in the Prairie?"Leebo33 wrote:Xbox One is going to control my "living room" but in the day when I'm watching just as much entertainment on my Ipad or streaming in the Den on my PC while I'm working from home I'm just not sure how important that is going to be. I'm just rarely in one room for very long. But as an Xbone owner and a gamer I certainly want Microsoft to continue to try to be innovative...but the thought of the entire family being entertained in one room seems old fashioned to me.
My kids only watch TV for live sports. They consume all other video content on their iPad, iPod or phone. I watch a lot of streaming and downloaded video on my laptop.
The days in which the TV is the epicenter of family entertainment are coming to a rapid end.

No, no...tell us how you really feel...RobVarak wrote: I'd be more likely to display a plaster cast of Jimmy Page's pecker as coffee table decor than put a gaming PC with 43 cooling fans in my family room.
