What Rob said. A terrific actor, my wife and I were fortunate enough to see him on Broadway 4 years ago.

RIP.

On a side note, and I'll admit this is a bit morbid, but I continually find myself amazed at the number of obituaries I hear of via this forum before anywhere else.

Even weirder example of modern information dynamics: I learned about it from a FB post by Grace Potter!

It's a strange world.

Much too young to leave this world. Sadly and surprisingly, I've only watched one Sopranos episode ever. Thinking I might begin the first season very soon.

I'd never have thought that Gandolfini would be gone just six short years after the series that made his legacy closed on a sudden and unexpected note.

James Gandolfini, despite his portrayal of a notorious New Jersey stereotype, was always a wonderful advocate for the state I've called home for 40 years.

Watch and soak it in. There isn't a better dramatic performance or more of an indelible character that I can think of in any medium, ever.

Interesting GQ story about Gandolfini and Chase, which illustrates some of the troubles the big man apparently had with the fame the role brought him:

This tracks with much of what goes on in his appearance on Inside the Actors Studio. This was clearly a guy who had a hard time with psychological repercussions of his method. The way that he approached his craft clearly took a toll on him.

You had me beat by one episode. Never had HBO and always balked at buying the season DVD's. Seems like a good time to stop procrastinating so watched the first five episodes this afternoon.

I'm not really sure why I didn't watch past the pilot episode. I remember watching it with my wife and we both thought it was just ok. Now as I look back, I certainly didn't give it its just due. I have a free weekend away from the wife and kids, so I plan to watch a handful of episodes this weekend.

The first time i saw him post Sopranos was on some HBO movie about Military Prison.

I was shocked that he talked like your ordinary American. I guess he was so good in the role as Tony Soprano, I always thought he'd have that stereotypical Italian-American type of voice like on Sopranos.

Thanks for linking that. Hadn't seen it before. Definitely hinted at some dark times.

Have now watched two episodes. Suffice to say, I'm hooked. I'll watch for enjoyment, my love for gangster movies, and in tribute to James Gandolfini.

Been waiting and waiting for all the seasons to come out on Blu-Ray but most of the seasons are only available on DVD.

Maybe there's more HD content on HBO Go, now that it's available on Apple TV ...
