Anyone lower hit power and have it be effective vs players falling down all over the place?

Lowered hitting power -1 for both human and CPU and put the attribute slider back to default, much better!

That might be it, I don't play on hardcore, I use the one right before it.

Sorry, the default on hardcore is 2 after all. So if you are the normal level, I assume it starts at 3, which probably explains it.

I've tried power on 3 before, and while it gets up the hit numbers on the stat sheet, some of checks are a tad over powered for my liking.....

Yeah, two seems about perfect to me. It's funny how you can run the goalies over this year and there is no after whistle play. Penalties are random too, you never get calls when you get sent to the ice on the way to the goal with the puck.

Mizz, are you playing on All Star, or Pro? I'm playing on AS, but I'm finding that the CPU goalies have become almost impossible to beat with all the tuners.......

I don't know how many times I've been robbed by desparation saves on rebounds, and this is with the reaction speed down to 2!

AS defaults, tuner 1.07. I do have the AI strategy for human at halfway like it is for the CPU. I like to just concentrate on the game without worrying about lines or my strategy.

I scored 5 goals in my last game.

Do you have the penalty sliders at the default too?

So, I tried AS defaults again, except for goalie cover at the max, and of course I now score 6 goals in a game. :P

With default penalty sliders, I took like 6 penalties, and only had one PP, so I will have to see how that pans out.

Also, fully manual passing is tricky..........

I crank up the penalty slider all the way and leave the other ones at default. I use 8 minute periods and see about 4 total penalties each game. Had one game where I only gave up 12 SOG and then the very next game I give up 38. 8O

Would anyone be willing to give me some puck control tips in this game? I simply don't understand it. i don't get puck control at all in this game at all. I don't think I'm that bad a player otherwise. I have a decent shot, play decent lanes, and pass pretty well if I do say so myself. But every (and I mean EVERY) human player I play (and the computer) can both steal and guard the puck better than I can, and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

You know when you are on defense and you just take the puck away from your opponent?

WELL, I DON'T! I don't know how to do that! I don't think I've ONCE had a pure steal, and I don't know why. if I poke check, the puck comes loose, and it's a race to who gets it. Stick lift? Same thing. Just bump into the guy? Nothing. I get shrugged off.

For a while I thought it may just be the Devils' ratings, because the players are not that good compared to most other teams. But no, I've been the penguins in another league and I see the same thing, so there is something obviously going on that I just don't get. I've tapped the buttons, I've held the buttons. I've used left stick, right stick, skated slow and skated fast, but if I have the puck I'm going to lose it, and if you have it you are going to keep it.

I understand if you are playing in the league against me you may not want to help. :) Understood. But for anyone else, PLEASE give me some pointers, because at this point I feel like the only guy not a member in some super secret steal the puck club, or more often, just plain stupid.

I've even googled this, and you know what, I've found a couple of other posts on various forums asking the same question. You know what? THEY NEVER GET ANSWERED.

It's weird. To whom do I pay the membership dues...

On defense, spamming the poke check button sometimes works. Also, cheat to the puck carriers forehand side, and be preemptive. Hit the button early, and guess a bit about where you think the puck will go. If you guess wrong it's no big deal and if you get it right it can turn the play.

As for tips about puck carrying, I've got nothing on that because I'm terrible at it.

Body checks work but you must hit the R-stick to make it an official game-sanctioned body check, not just skate into the guy with no R-stick push. It can be very hard in the open ice to body check but it's definitely doable. Hitting the R-stick earlier than you think you should will probably help.

I never stick lift. I guess I'm afraid of getting the slash call or the high stick call. I poke check like a nervous dog with canine Tourette's though. But I almost never get breakaways. Also I feel weird trying to give you advice because my sense is that you (and Naples and G7) are a major cut above in terms of skill. Also I wish you'd join us in OTP.

Oh. OH!

Okay, this could be it. Definitely blame it on me being thick. I HAD read the 'spam the poke' advice before, but I interpreted it as 'try the poke check often when compared to other tactics' rather than 'press the poke button rapid fire.' Sometimes I find myself limiting my tactics in video games because I play the way I *think* a game should work, rather than the way it *does* work. Need to work on that.

I'll give this a shot, because I've never attacked the button like that. Thanks, guys!

I'll second Naples' advice, but to clarify MY interpretation, it's not necessarily rapid fire, but multiple timely attempts especially while back skating with LT held down. There is definitely a pace to it but, for me at least, it's not just stab away, but DO be a little stab happy if you are on the puck carriers forehand.

Likewise when you are carrying, it's all about getting your body between the defender and the puck. Techniques include RS stick handling to keep it at distance, pulling up or wheeling inside the blue line to guard the puck... Zeppo pointed out the effect that LB can have, although my preference is to hold down A in similar situations.

Oh, and I second Zeppo's call for you to join us in OTP especially since you've resolved your headset issue. You've certainly got the skills and it's all about fun anyhow. Nights where we get enough guys we do Versus play anyhow.

II find these matches addictive, personally. :-)

Re: NHL 13

I may fool around with it more in offline and non-league play. Slamming it rapidly didn't do much for me in my one game since, but -and no disrespect for Zeppo on his good win- I was spending more time trying to figure out the poke check than playing to win the game. It may just be a skill thing that I don't get. Then again, I'm not using LT much when poking, as I'm on auto-skate backwards and I thought LT was mostly just backwards skate on defense, vision control on offense.

Thanks for all the advice, guys!

On a slightly tweaked AS level, I'm dead last. Going to have a good draft pick I'd imagine. :)

What are you tweaking MIzz? I was using Orion's sliders from OS< but I find that at a gamespeed of 2, player just seem to be in mud and take forever to get up to speed.

I've not been able to find a set that I like long term and stick with.
