Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
As long as iOS 6 runs fine on the 4S then I'll have no need to upgrade to the 5.
The screen size bump to 4" isn't enough for me. Was hoping for it to be the 4.2 - 4.5 range.
Still, what I'm really looking for is the iPad Mini.

They are keeping the old models for the 16gb and 32gb version of the Touch. Then the new one has 32gb and 64gb. Gotta get that money ya know.sportdan30 wrote:Will most likely pick up a nano for gym workouts and walking. Very impressive.
No 16GB iTouch? That's disappointing. Gotta think the iPad Mini will be priced around $399 if the 32 GB iTouch is $299.
as fro the 16gb iPad Mini...guaranteed $299...they HAVE to since the iPad 2 is already $399.
I'd dump my iPad 3 w/ Verizon LTE and my Nexus 7 in a heartbeat, no matter the price, if the iPad Mini has a version with Verizon LTE in it however. I just prefer the smaller size.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
After being spoiled with Cowon players it would be pretty tough buying any Apple audio player. Definite buy on an iPad Mini or whatever they plan on calling it. It would be a bonus if they put the A6 chip in the smaller iPad.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
There isn't going to be any more revolution unless someone comes up with something different than a touchscreen.
Original iPhone did that when the dominant paradigm for smart phones was Treo/Blackberry with the built-in keyboards.
Now, are there even that many smart phones with hardware keyboards any more?
At this point, you're going to get incremental refinements or a collection of little improvements in the hardware design. Thinner, lighter, maybe more exotic materials or finish. The footprint is going to be dictated by the screen so it's going to be a slab of some kind (unless you can defy physics and make it fold or roll down to the shape and size of the pen and then expand into the slab, like something out of the Jetsons).
There will be new software or service features, like Siri, though beyond voice and NLP, it's hard to imagine something radically different. They could probably do something like Kinect but who's going to set their phones down and flail their arms at them to get the phones to do something?
So the new features will seem subtle (though making the design thinner and delivering a certain build quality takes a lot of engineering) instead of mind-blowing.

The iPhone 5 feels overdue, and isn't pushing any limits. Still, it takes one of the most popular phones on the market, and gives it a bigger screen, 4G, and makes it faster and lighter. It's not a total turd.
I've actually never had a smartphone and I am looking forward to getting one. (I'm mainly sticking to apple for platform and app consistency with my iPad)

What would you need the A6 for? ARe you going to buy that EA racing game they showed or games like it? Or just free games, which probably won't aim to produce "console-like" graphics.

They have this video up on the site:Naples39 wrote:The iPhone 5 feels overdue, and isn't pushing any limits. Still, it takes one of the most popular phones on the market, and gives it a bigger screen, 4G, and makes it faster and lighter. It's not a total turd.

Yeah I think people take for granted the engineering feat to make it thinner and produce a high level of fit and finish. Manufacturing tolerances seem very strict according to that video.
Rumors were that they couldn't produce the next design after the iPhone 4 in time so they shipped the iPhone 4S instead, with the same case design but upgraded internals. Not sure if this is the design they were struggling with last year but it sounds like it took them over 2 years to get the manufacturing process down, because they have to ship some insane volumes.

It took them two years to come up with the ugly design? Eeesh. Last years was probably the best looking of all the iPhones...but the addition of aluminum AND glass on the back makes this thing look cobbled together. Yes, I understand the need for the glass because of the radios, but the thing just looks like a prototype, not a finely tuned apple product.wco81 wrote:Rumors were that they couldn't produce the next design after the iPhone 4 in time so they shipped the iPhone 4S instead, with the same case design but upgraded internals. Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
This is more like the iPhone 4ss.
I don't really think there's a lot to this. I look at iPhones because they have their cameras dailed better than most cell phones.
But because I live where the fastest cell phone service is usually 1.5 years behind major cities, the LTE is pointless and iPhone 5 is pointless. In my town the (s) phones are timed perfectly here.

The ideal smartphone for me would have the size of the Galaxy 3S with the features of the iPhone 5 including all the apps and games I've purchased over the years at iTunes.

I skipped the 4s so, much like my move from iPad to iPad3, I expect this to feel like a big upgrade. I agree that this phone has features that android has had for a while and in that sense has done nothing more than "caught up". But that was always a complaint, they needed to "catch up" in terms of some features. Now they have.10spro wrote:The ideal smartphone for me would have the size of the Galaxy 3S with the features of the iPhone 5 including all the apps and games I've purchased over the years at iTunes.
Oh, and because I don't have hands like Sasquatch, the Galaxy 3s is worthless to me no matter how cool I think it is. It's impossible to comfortably use that phone with one hand (for me anyway) due to its width and this is where the new iPhone design works very well. Bigger screen, but still manageable as primarily a single handed device, which for me a phone should be, and not leaning towards a mini tablet that makes phone calls.

I'm going to preorder the new iPhone5 tomorrow. Android has become stale to me so I'm ready for a change and I've never owned an iPhone as I went from Blackberry straight to Android.

That new iPhone looks really cool. Don't see why all the hate for the new design?

I guess people were expecting something other than a candybar with a screen dominating the face?
There was disappointment about the 4S because the form factor was unchanged and it sold like crazy.

I do. It's ugly. Especially the back...looks like a prototype, not a final product to me. I think the 4/4S is fantastic looking, probably the finest phone design ever, and now they've ruined it.jLp vAkEr0 wrote:Who hates it?Rodster wrote:That new iPhone looks really cool. All of this been subjective, of course.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
There are some favorable hands on impressions, about how the materials feel and so on. Apple touted the fit and finish in the presentation but in commercials, they'll probably emphasize the display, which is the most obvious change.
I think the iPad made a lot of sales to people who saw it in person. Maybe that will be a factor with this too, though I would expect the preorders to be packed.

Way to go out on a limb. Doesn't matter what it looks like or how it performs...the iPhone guys/gals will buy it, even if there are superior products on the market. It's what they do.wco81 wrote:Maybe that will be a factor with this too, though I would expect the preorders to be packed.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
I guess when you buy every Android phone that comes out like you do, it allows you to keep ahead of the "superior phone" spectrum. Some people like to upgrade every two or three years...not every other month.dbdynsty25 wrote:Way to go out on a limb. I've had two phones in the past year. Suck it.tjung0831 wrote:I guess when you buy every Android phone that comes out like you do, it allows you to keep ahead of the "superior phone" spectrum. Some people like to upgrade every two or three years...not every other month.
Galaxy Nexus (still own it) and the Galaxy S3 (using it currently).
I can't help it that the iPhone gets less and less innovative each time it's released. They are clearly content in just adding a feature each year to get everyone to upgrade their phones. It's genius really.
Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Well the thing is, as 10S mentioned above, once you are in the iOS ecosystem it's very hard to leave. Not only do you have the library of apps you've built up over time, but you also likely have an iPad to share them with.
Just as with their home computers starting way back when, by controlling both the hardware and the operating system, they make it much much harder to abandon the hardware once you are deep into it.
With an android phone, you can switch up hardware from different manufacturers at will.
And frankly, despite the lack of features compared to the newest android phones or what not, as an iPhone user I'm certainly not suffering along here feeling like I'm stuck with the iOS despite myself or anything. Some of the newer phones have some neat stuff, but the iPhone isn't severely lacking in any way as far as how I use it.

Re: The IPhone is totally awesome oh my gawd thread
Oh no, no one is saying that iPhone is lacking...at least I'm not. There is one main thing that it IS lacking however and that is customization. The severe lack of it is what turns me off from a phone aspect. I can deal with it on my iPad because I don't check my iPad so often, and I don't need something like a widget to give me information without having to launch apps or search for it. That is the biggest reason I can't stand the iOS software on a phone. As for features on new phones...iOS gets them...just a year later usually, and then they claim they invented them. LOL...it's hilarious actually.Zeppo wrote:And frankly, despite the lack of features compared to the newest android phones or what not, as an iPhone user I'm certainly not suffering along here feeling like I'm stuck with the iOS despite myself or anything. That said, the iPhone certainly does stuff better than Android...for one, corporate email. Anytime someone asks me what phone to get that's the first thing I ask them. If they are using corporate email ANDROID SUCKS. It really is a horrible implementation and it has barely improved since it's inception, so there are definitely reasons to go with iOS from a phone standpoint...it's not like Android is perfect. Far from it.
You're totally right that people will not switch because of the investment in the ecosystem. Guys like me who buy apps on BOTH systems are definitely the minority but I just use whatever product is good for me. It is funny that the only real device I use daily that ISN'T an Apple product is the iPhone. I've got my MacBook, I've got my iPad, I've got my AppleTV, etc. I'm a die hard Google Ecosystem user though (google talk, google drive, google voice, gmail, calendars and contacts) so Android just destroys iOS for everyday use. So I guess that probably will never change.
