OT: Crusader Kings 2 (PC)

Post by RobVarak »

So maybe it's all the GoT I've been watching, but when I heard the Gamers with Jobs podcast guys raving a bit about this game, I had to check it out.

It's by Paradox, with all the good and bad that implies, but it's definitely as good as anything they've ever done.

It's not really a traditional strategy game in the use resources/build armies/conquer vein. It shifts the focus to basically being a dynastic simulator, where you play as a succession of rulers over many generations (hopefully...if you leave no heir the game is over).

It's much more about palace intrigue, diplomacy, religion and even role playing. In true Paradox fashion, there are countless details that make a rich and dynamic game world. Also in true Paradox fashion, the interface alternates between intuitive brilliance and clunky frustration. Totally worth it for me though.

So far I've only played about 30 years. My "starter" king, the King of Croatia finally had a son in his twilight years. The young heir was only 3 when the King died, so now I have to deal with a regency. Naturally, every landed noble great and small sees this as a chance to take advantage. My dungeons are doing brisk business.

If anyone's interested, there is a cool thread at GWJ that shows what the game can do.

This screencap really says it all about this game :)

For anyone wanting to check this out Amazon has the Steam digital download on sale for $17.99 this week. I had been considering getting this for those times when my kids are occupying the Xbox and will probably check it out with Rob's recommendation before it goes back up to full price.

There's a fantastic in-depth guide to the game mechanics available at http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/sho ... -Novapaddy

Best to play a few games before diving into that, though.

Just found this beginner's guide for new players, but haven't had time to check it out myself yet.

Had a great, great game last night where I ended up having to ally with my mortal enemies the Serbs in order to fend off a Muslim attack. So much fun.

Pardon the stupid question but how is this a Steam download? I don't see Steam mentioned at all.

I was waiting until Friday to purchase myself, but I am assuming that Amazon will send you a code to redem from Steam. I got my information from this SlickDeals thread:

http://slickdeals.net/f/3819568-Steam-2 ... -this-year

04/05/12 Crusader Kings II -55% off $17.99 http://www.amazon.com/Paradox-Int...006ULENFG/
NOTE: A Steam activated Amazon game sale.

So maybe the download is from Amazon but Steam activation is required to play?

That looks so up my alley it frightens me. I'm afraid I'd love it so much I'd wind up like the dried husk of a kid in a Korean cybercafe who died after playing Starcraft for 80 hours without sleeping, eating, or shitting.

IDK but that is a good price so I am going to buy it when I get home tonight. I was waiting for one of those big Steam sales but this will do.

Definitely a possible outcome. It has that Civ vibe where you keep setting and ignoring arbitrary stopping points. :)

I went ahead and got this you can download it from Amazon or just get the product key in the order details and activate and download from Steam which is what I did. It is going to wait though as I am knee deep in Legend of Grimlock

Bringing up this old thread. I bought this game a while back after reading some very intriguing reviews. I've tried playing through the tutorials but it's so incredibly dense and intimidating that I can't convince myself to keep playing. I've yet to start a game on my own, lol.

I REALLY want to get into this game. It seems like an Eastside Hockey Manager or OOTP but with political intrigue instead of sports. But just like those games you have to know the ins and outs of the subject matter. To make matters worse some of language in this game has been dead for centuries and has no modern equivalent.

Anyone have any tips on how to get started with this game? I've tried readings some of those wikis but it's just so much information to absorb, it's like i'm back in History class.
