If none of the shooters fall over and slide headfirst into the boards and get a concussion, then that counts as a successful shootout for the Flyers. They are beyond awful at them, but apparently not bad enough for for the coaching staff to actually do any work on it.

Not surprisingly, 'Nucks are not that much better at the skill competition considering the numbers of skilled guys they have. Definitely, some teams practice it more than others.

So you are a "glass is half full" kinda guy? Girioux almost did just that on his backhander when Thomas tripped him with his stick.

I ran all the numbers on the Flyers awfulness in shootouts on my blog;
http://mostlyflyers.blogspot.com/2012/0 ... otout.html

As you might have guessed, the Flyers are pretty clearly the worst team in the NHL in shootouts, this year and all time. Bryzgalov has no saves in 5 attempts against this year!

Wow, Niittymaki is great in the shootouts for other teams, and wasn't too bad when he played in Philly.

Ovechkin gets a 3 game suspension for this dirty hit. Good call.

Surprised he didn't get suspended sooner. He leaves his feet all the time. I like Ovechkin but he can be very reckless with his hits.

I thought Shanny started off very strong, but in the past month I'm starting to think he's not as consistent as I thought he would be. Based on other players' suspensions who had little to no prior history, the AO hit deserved more than 3 games. That type of hit is textbook dirty and illegal, and is the type of hit that leads to concussions. Meanwhile, I am seeing headshots quite a bit where a dude leaves his feet and leads with his shoulder or elbow, and no suspension is doled out.

3 games for OV seems fine to me. It was an unnecessarily dangerous charge, but hardly mass murder. It's only even 3 because he is a repeat offender.

Yeah, I am OK with him getting 3 too.

Yet another BOS player was suspended last week when A. Ference shoved McDonagh dangerously into the boards and got 3 games in a much more compromised situation. The thing with Ovie, he plays with an edge and he does go overboard sometimes.

So Ovechkin will be passing on the AS game since he's suspended. Bunch of crap OV. You're one of the key ambassadors for the game and you're showing your true kiddie colors to all the fans that voted for you. 'My heart is not there'. Pleeeaasssee. Not matter how he spins his excuses around his absence, it's disappointing, a weak, lousy excuse at Shanny for suspending him. Grow up.

I'll disagree with this point, although I agree with the post below this one wholeheartedly 10s. The Ference hit looked FAR worse than it actually was. I completely agree with the suspension based on Shanahan's policing of the league, but the difference is OV lined up Michalek, had time to make the decision, and launched at his head. Ference was attacking a dumped puck and tried to get an angle and ended up in a point of no return situation and made a bad decision. Unlike Ovechkin there was no intent.

Ironically, the Sharks waived Nitty today.

Teams like OTT and TPA will probably take the bait.

The blessing and curse of NHL players is on full display tonight in Ottawa during the Fantasy Player All-Star Draft. NHL players are humble, unassuming guys, who are all about team, even at a fun event like this. That also makes these guys -- and this event -- incredibly dull.

Hockey needs another Jeremy Roenick on the ice. It needs an outspoken lightning rod with talent.

For me, the AS weekend is just about the skills event on Saturday night as I don't bother with the game itself.

Didn't want to start another thread for this so figured I'd post it here with all my fellow hockey fans. Does anyone have a dvd copy of the 1980 olympic game against the Soviets? (Or know where to get one?) I checked eBay but no luck…and not sure I'd trust it if I did find it anyway.

The only thing I have is the HBO documentary about the game. Awesome. Shows a lot of footage from the game but not the entire game.

Problem is that abc chose not to televise the game live. So they just did the US TV bullshit of cutting in and out of taped fluff. When it comes to the Olympics, the US networks have always been far more interested in the chick stuff than in the actual sports.
