New York for Dinner

Post by RallyMonkey »

Ok, first I apologize for what may be a wasted thread but figured I'd see if even one of you guys could help. I'm headed to the city for the weekend with my fiance for her birthday and need a good place for dinner. I'd like to get info on more "diamonds in the rough" than the tourist traps, but great food anywhere is the most important factor. Any suggestions will be helpful.

We are staying in Times Square but don't mind taking a cab ride either.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the apology at the start should have been made directly to him, but I was hoping the info on the engagement would be cause for a slide on this one! :D

There's a million ways you can go in NY, but if you're into Food Network/Celebrity chef stuff, any of the Batali or Bobby Flay restaurants are all fantastic. In particular, I love Casa Mono (Batali), Mesa Grill (flay), or Bar American (flay). BabBo (Batali) is really great, too, but getting a reservation on this short of notice would be quite a feat. My wife went to Morimoto's place in meat packing district & the photos she brought instantly put it at the top of my "next time" list! Regardless, def get out of Times Square.

Thanks Gregg. I have a Bar American (agreed, it's great) right near my home and have been to Mesa Grill in Vegas, but never been to a Batali restaurant so I'll definitely look into those. Appreciate the help.

Back in the day, maybe, if that's your thing. But they've cleaned up Times Square, turned it into a tourist trap.

Great, thank you. That is actually one of the options on my list so good to hear a positive review.

My friend owns http://www.butterrestaurant.com/

He also owns 1Oak and is about to open up another 1Oak @ The Mirage in Vegas..

I have been to Butter a couple of times and it is really good. Monday is celebrity night.. I met quite a few when I went...

I love Babbo. Get the pasta tasting dish, one of my favorite things I have ever eaten.

Do you like dumplings? If so, make sure you go to Joe Shanghai in Chinatown. You will not regret this. Best soup dumplings, even Hong Kong stars all go there when they come to NYC (pictures of Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat are all over the restaurant).
