Fletch and Teal:

thanks for the fine impressions.

far as being able to decipher between 'Lie' and 'Doubt'. From the gameplay i viewed, it stated one difference between the 2 is, as the detective you cannot select 'Lie' unless you have the clue/proof to back it up.

it appears a projection had made (a cross between Heavy Rain and Mafia 2) may be on target.

personally, not setting high expectations at this point. From the gameplay i viewed, the camera view looks like Read Dead Redemption. Translation: very beautiful graphics which don't feel up close & organic, because the camera is set too far back. To be honest, i know you fellas have to get tired of me on this topic. The camera/view is important to me in 3d vidgames. If the view was the same as TeamBondi's 'The Getaway' (an underrated tite) or GTA IV it would be perfect. However, from the gameplay footage it looks identical to RDR. And similar to RDR, the camera only zooms in, in gunfights.

expect will like this title. However, the in-game graphics may be lost on me, due to the above

Vinny:
The camera isn't set as far back in LA:N as it is in RDR. In fact, it's quite a bit closer.

Just delivered. I have to say that my initial impressions are that the shipping package just sort of sits there waiting for me to open it. Not very engaging. :)

$59.99 - $10x2 ($20 off) in promotional credits from two separate LA Noire cancellations and a $15 promotional credit towards my next purchase. So to recap $59.99 -$20 -$15 = $24.99 8)

Got some questions guys. Are there street signs in the game? I heard there wasn't. Also, can you actually ride Angels Flight? It's at Hill and 3rd. Can you enter buildings, such as the Bradbury (3rth and Broadway), the Grand Central Market (also around 3rd and Broadway, right next to the Million Dollar Theater), the Los Angels Theater (7th and Broadway)?

Well I just found $30 worth of coupons to Best Buy. Hmm maybe I will give this a shot.

Is this a game you could play with someone else watching? I mean could I play this game with the wife?

To the person who said they wanted to turn off the sound/rumble "clue" effects, I would suggest against it. It isn't a cheap gimmick like using guess pitch in The Show if you ask me. Sometimes you won't even know what you can and can't pick up. For example, you will see beer bottles and other objects laying around in the game. Some of them you can pick up (it will rumble) while others you can not. It would be extremely frustrating to walk around trying to pick up and inspect everything.

Teal is right, though. This is not a game where you have to start from scratch and find the clues yourself. It's linear in the sense that the game gives you everything you need after you do a little digging. You could find 6 items and ask a witness 6 things. Even if all 6 are wrong (they may be guilty but you believe them all 6 times), you will still end up busting them if that's how the case is supposed to end. Your ranking at the end will suffer, as will your lack of XP gained. One thing to really remember is the fact you're a cop. I was driving wildly on my way to a crime scene and ended up hitting a pedestrian. I think we're all so used to GTA which has zero penalties for killing people. If you hit a civilian you will lose a lot of points at the final results screen. You are also penalized for damage that you do to your car, as well as city property. Hit a few telephone poles during a mission and that's several hundred $$$.

You could play it with someone watching, but they may get bored of it pretty quickly. It's not like Uncharted 2 which was constant action. Driving to a crime scene is enjoyable for the player, but it would most likely bore someone who was watching it to tears. There is quite a bit of driving in this game, which should not be a shock to anyone used to a GTA or Mafia game.

After a few missions, I have to say it's definitely deliberately paced. But I am prepared to forgive a lot...I mean a lot of gameplay flaws in light of the staggering awesomeness of the game world. The design of the environment is simply unprecedented in terms of period detail and context. I could stop and look at virtually any street corner for 10 minutes just dumbstruck by the advertisements, architecture etc. Then again, I'm the kind of nerd who pauses "Boardwalk Empire" to admire the details in the background. :)

It's really like being inside a Walter Mosely novel, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

Im very early into it also but I too am digging the style in a big way.

First big smile for me was that meeting with his captain before the first interrogation... Captain Donelly is stolen directly from LA Confidential. From the accent right down to his use of "boyo" thats Captain Dudley Smith. Not a bad thing....That movie tried to capture noir and did so pretty well.

If you find yourself interested in the genre and want to check out some flicks besides L.A. C, you can also watch Chinatown( which tried to capture it in the 70s), or choose from either The Big Sleep or The Maltese Falcon which are two of Bogarts best known noir films. All four are EXCELLENT.

don't take it in a bad way, but any convo of film noirs limited to only 3 titles is like a discussion of music limited to 3 song titles. A long-time collector of classic movies/films, I find the 'best' film noirs, are often ones not recognized by the 'experts' and Hollywood.

this may be of interest to someone. A very fine 'Film Noir' site. Along with a complete listing of the films they've covered:
http://www.noiroftheweek.com/2005/01/no ... -list.html

incidentally, my personal fave film noirs:

1) They Made Me A Criminal (1939 - John Garfield)
2) Detour (1945- Tom Neal)
3) Dead Ringer (1964 - Bette Davis)
4) This Gun For Hire (1942 - Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake)
5) Across the Pacific (1942 - Humphrey Bogart)

* Split Second (1953)
* Key Largo (1948 - Humphrey Bogart)
* Dark Passage (1947 - Humphrey Bogart)
* Kiss of Death (1947 - Richard Widmark, Victor Mature)
* Born to Kill (1947 - Lawrence Tierney)
* Criss Cross (1949 - Burt Lancaster)
* DOA (1950 - Edmund O'Brien)
* The Night of the Hunter (1955- Robert Mitchum)
* Sorry, Wrong Number (1948 - Burt Lancaster, Barbara Stanwyck)
* The Sleeping City (1950 - Richard Conte)
* Tension (1949- Richard Basehart)
* The Killing (1956)
* Maltese Falcon (1941 - Humphrey Bogart)

if anyone is new to film noir, or maybe not certain what exactly it is, my #1 recommendation would be 'Detour'. The movie is simple, relatively short, and embodies every quality synonymous with black & white noir. The fact Rockstar recognized this lesser known movie on their site, was refreshing.

Not taken in a bad way at all. You are correct. Very many good titles out there and many I have yet to see. I mentioned those three because people are more likely to see them and even more importantly ...I own copies of them 8)

Plus I do LOVE The Maltese Falcon. I not only own a dvd and the blu ray but I read the Hammett novel before I ever saw the movie.

...and to show how much I do love a good( probably bad this time) segue. I like to collect stuff and I have a 70's French rerelease poster for TMF..

BTW...Awesome you collect old movies and a great link...It is book marked. :)

Edit: BTW #2 That is a great list you have and I will be checking a few of the films on it very soon.

That poster is all kinds of awesome. One of the best times I've ever had in a theater was when a local old movie house had a 2x feature of Big Sleep and Falcon. Nothing like seeing those old beauties on a giant screen.

thanks, brother.

yes. Maltese Falcon is an excellent movie. It is kewl you took the time to read the book. You know, you may wish to check 'Across the Pacific' (if you haven't). In a way it pays homage to MF. As it reunites Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet. It was released the year after MF. Don't expect it to be better then Maltese Falcon, tho. It is the least perfect film in my personal top 5.

happy you liked the link. Haven't discovered a better Noir site on the net. He really covers/reviews alot of unknown film noir gems, along with the popular ones as well.

Got the game, played it for about a half an hour and it is definitely some good stuff. I simply don't have the time to play consistently right now with work and coaching my high school guys in the playoffs. In about 2 weeks I plan on getting back in the swing on the old consoles. Looking forward to getting into the game.

The facial motion stuff is awesome. You can really see emotion, etc. I can see it showing up in more games very quickly. Can you imagine NBA2K12, The Show 12, NHL 12, etc. with this stuff? It would be sweet.

It'll be awhile. You'll probably see it in GTA V before any other game.
