If he really turned down an extra $4.7m in guaranteed money from the Flyers then it is really is shocking. He'll be 35 years old in a couple of weeks.

What a depressing development.

I can understand the frustration with losing your stanley cup goalie, but turco at 1.3 vs 2.75 for niemi? That's a no brainer, and frankly a steal for turco by any measure. I mean the flyers are paying more money to michael leighton!

Rumors were that turco turned down a 3 year, 6m offer from flyers last week. Can't verify, by kind of shocking decision by turco if you ask me.
In the age of salaray caps, tough decisions must be made but in this case I would have done the same thing. Especially if you're keeping the core group of Toews, Kane, Sharp, Keith and Seabrook. Good money for Niemi, but was this a one lucky shot at Lord Stanley? Not enough proof not me that he's worth almost 3 milliion especially when the Hawks were going in tandem with Huet during the regular season.

Turco is not a bad alternative at all especially with that price tag. Te thing with him, is that he wanted to be a starter no matter where he played and Philly couldn't warrant that.

Holmgren definitely screwed up by trying to get a jump on the market and signing Leighton for 1.5 on the eve of free agency. He should've waited and at least tried for some UFA goalies like Turco. It's not like other teams were going to snatch him up--he would've still been available if other UFA goalies didn't work out for the Flyers.

It would have been great to be able to keep Niemi and yes Huet is killing em but I really dont think this is as bad as the loss of lets say a Versteeg. I think they still would have won the cup last year if Turco was in the net. As long as they still have the best players of the last olympics skating for them I think all will be well.

Now if Niemi goes on to be a HoF goalie I will take that all back.

I am predicting a big time sophomore let down and will suck whatever he goes. It'll be an expensive acquisition if he ends up in the minors again.

Those crazy sharks. If ya cant beat em and all that. The Sharks still havent fixed the real problem with their team in the playoffs. Thornton was, is and always will be a gutless worm.

Giving away his captaincy is the best thing that Luongo could do for the 'Nucks this coming season. Now he can concentrate in what he should be best at.
