The Campbell and Hossa contract are crap deals if you ask me, but I'd probably take them for a single cup win. They still have to pay Huet for 2 more years too. The spine of the team (minus Niemi) is staying, but Byfuglien, Sopel, Eager and Versteeg already gone, Madden and Burish one foot out the door (although does anyone really care about Burish and Eager). Kind of ugly, but is this the formula for winning the cup in the cap world?

I'm bracing myself for disappointment today as a Flyers fan anyway.

Flyers trade for Mezsaros and re-sign Coburn. Best defense in league with Pronger, Timonen, Carle, Coburn and Mezsaros? Good enough to make Leighton look good?

Gonchar to OTT biggest signing so far otherwise.

I would have preferred to get a guy like C. Armstrong who was snatched up by the Leafs, but for a third line player paying over 3 million per is a bit excessive. M. Gillis did well in getting veteran M. Malhotra instead, a good face-off man and penalty killer.

Pens bought themselves an improved defense today (Martin and Michalek) to the tune of 9 mil/yr for the next 5 years. It looks like they may have to be the first team in NHL history to play out a season with 3 centers and no wingers, but considering how bad the wingers they had last year were, they are a much improved team as of this moment.

Sens overpaid. Gonchar is aging and getting brittle. But at least it was only a three-year deal.

Still, no way Gonchar plays 80 games in any of the three years of that deal.

I like the Oil's signing of Kurtis Foster for two years at $1.8 million per year. WAY cheaper than Souray, who must be on his way out.

A rare smart move by Tambi, both in dollars and length.

I just don't get the resigning of O. Jokinen back to the Flames. A. Tanguay and Iginla did have some chemistry when they both played together but Tanguay who seems to be musical chairs every season had injury problems.
Jokinen comes cheaper than his previous overrated price but has shown no chemistry with the likes of Iggy and is known as a persona non grata in the dressing room. Don't know what the Sutters are thinking.

With PIT unable to sign one of the most coveted D-man in D. Hamhuis, there's talk that the 'Nucks will be pursuing full throttle for the the BC boy's services which would bring a big smile to me face. With K. Ballard already in, it would mean that someone has to go because Hamhuis is not going to come cheap, hmm, adios K. Bieksa?

Vancouver got him for 6 years, $27 million.
The Flyers re-signed Michael Leighton Wednesday on a two-year deal with a cap hit of $1.55 million. Yet Tampa landed Dan Ellis for a lesser hit – $1.5 million – while Atlanta invested $1.85 million on Chris Mason’s cap hit. Both are better goalies.

Again, the Flyers came up lame in net, and it could cost dearly in the playoffs next season.
I have to agree with Tim Panaccio. :(

Even the TSN guys twittered it's probably the strangest thing they have ever had to report in their careers.

And yes, it's Canada Day, aka the day they show Free Agent Frenzy on TSN2, alllllll dayyyyy longggggg...... basically 6 hours of commentators talking with the occasional signing. ;)

Well I can't say I'm pleased with the Flyers electing to resign Leighton and spend over a million on Jody Shelley. It's one thing to sign Leighton if they had no money and wanted a super cheap goalie, but given the other prices that UFA goalies came at (Ellis $1.5, Mason $1.85, Nittymaki $2), Leighton at $1.55 is hardly a bargain basement price.

The other word is Gagne has agreed to waive his no-trade clause. Injuries, age and lack of aggression the last few seasons and he's not a reliable goal scoring threat anymore. I could see the Flyers trading him for picks/prospects to free up cap space for a goalie (Turco?), or traded to LA directly for Quick/Bernier.

The other story to watch is Kovalchuk. People still tend to say LA for him, but word is the Isles offered 10 years $100million. I could see Kovalchuk having no problems cashing a massive paycheck while toiling for a mediocre team and avoiding media scrutiny. Probably got used to it ATL.

I'll miss Gagne, but I think it's time for him to go.

SI's breakdown of the big free agent signings so far. The last player is worth quoting:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/w ... ?eref=sihp
Derek Boogaard to the Rangers, four years, $6.5 million

It's no longer even worth asking how Rangers GM Glen Sather keeps his job. Clearly there are no standards of accountability in that organization. A year after the Donald Brashear debacle, Slats misfired again by giving the admittedly intimidating Boogey Man both term and dollars that sail well beyond the absurd. With so many glaring holes in his lineup -- wouldn't one of those defenders have been a better use of his cap space? -- Sather instead adds a goon who brings the team no closer to being competitive on any level. Just a joke of a signing.

Doesn't look like Kovy will end up in LA, who would have thought that this guy would still be up for grabs at this juncture of the year. If not the Isles, go back to the Russian league?

I'm not entirely convinced LA is out of it yet. This might just be posturing by Dean Lombardi to get Kovy to drop his asking price. Still, Kovy is coming off as a completely sellfish ass so far. If he actually chooses to go to NYI for the rumored 10 years at $100 mil then he's pretty much guaranteed that he will never win a cup in this league. They would never be able to afford the surrounding cast needed to be a contender with that handcuffing contract.

Add Dipietro's 4.5 cap hit for a decidedly average goaltender, plus the money they are STILL paying Yashin for the buyout. according to NHLnumbers.com he has a cap hit of 4.5 for the next 4 years. Not sure if that's how it plays out with a buyout. What a horrible organization to play for.

I've heard what Kings said, that LA aren't really out of it. Sounds more like they've made their final offer. Word is decision coming today from Kovalchuk. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

Oh, and regarding the Isles cap space, they are currently $9 million under the cap floor. Wow.

EDIT: Unconfirmed report that Kovy to Devils, 7 years $60m.

Big-time bummer. Probie's battles with Tie Domi in the 90s were EPIC. Dude had plenty of demons with coke and booze but worked hard to overcome them.

RIP.

I was very lucky the last two years to personally know Bob Probert and I'm crushed that he's passed away. He was a truly lovely and gentle man - a complete 180 from what you'd expect a former NHL enforcer to be - last time I saw him he wanted to see baby pics.
