File under: Never happening... (nor should he). What if (somehow) CLE came back to win after the blown call? Do you still give DET the win? What if that call happened in the 3rd and he perfect afterward? The drama was that it was the last out, it sucked, and it's time for replay. End of story.10spro wrote:No doubt, will he have the cajunas to do so?vinny-b wrote:word.10spro wrote:Don't know what an apology would do for Galarraga at this point as he was robbed of perfection and history in the books. I agree they need replay and umps can be arrogant asses, but Joyce just made a mistake. A huge mistake, no doubt, but those things happen. Like Gregg said, this is amplified as much because of when it happened. The mind plays tricks and I believe him when he says that, in real time, he thought the runner was safe.tmdba37 wrote:Another reason to hate all umpires. . .everywhere. . .they all suck on principle.
This call will lead to full blown replay because there just cannot be anymore blind and foolish calls like this anymore. . .it's just pointless to let these smug and haughty umps ruin games and history. . .
Yeah, it's already being talked about way more than the other two perfectos this year.Brando70 wrote: The irony is that this call will make Galarraga's "perfect" game more memorable than if he'd thrown an official one.

It actually seemed he already knew on the field that he had blowned the call.lexbur wrote:Yeah, it's already being talked about way more than the other two perfectos this year.Brando70 wrote: The irony is that this call will make Galarraga's "perfect" game more memorable than if he'd thrown an official one.
I thought Galarraga showed a lot of class not going ballistic, even in his comments after the game.
I feel bad for Joyce. He made a mistake, but he admitted it, and apologized, there was no arrogance on his part. Nobody feels worse about it than him.

There was a slight pause before he called him safe. He'll play that moment over & over in his mind. The sheer fact he didn't toss Magglio after Magglio ripped him to his face for 5 mins was pretty telling that he knew he blew it. It's odd that he wouldn't just call him out & be the ump that gave away a perfect game than risk being the ump who took it away. It was all 'heat of moment'... (telling ya what your heart meant!!)jLp vAkEr0 wrote:It actually seemed he already knew on the field that he had blowned the call.lexbur wrote:Yeah, it's already being talked about way more than the other two perfectos this year.Brando70 wrote: The irony is that this call will make Galarraga's "perfect" game more memorable than if he'd thrown an official one.

You really have to feel bad for both parties here. We can hate on umpires all we want, but you really can't say the man actually wanted this type of attention.

I probably didn't explain myself as well as I should have as I was quickly typing this inbetween periods during the Hawks-Flyers game. . .Brando70 wrote:I agree they need replay and umps can be arrogant asses, but Joyce just made a mistake. I think they should use a system similar to the NFL and let managers challenge or let a booth umpire review when needed. I'd keep balls/strikes out of review consideration but allow review of everything else. Baseball already has a bunch of stoppages, what's a few more if it helps get a call correct?
The irony is that this call will make Galarraga's "perfect" game more memorable than if he'd thrown an official one.

As a Nats fan living in Canada, I wish I could see the game on TV..... I'll have to scour the interwebs for a streaming site. But I'm definately excited by Strasburg, and even more excited and pleasently surprised by how well the Nats are playing this year.lexbur wrote:Finally, SOMETHING to make interleague play worth a damn... Strasburg's second start figures to be here in Cleveland.
Geeze, if his first two starts are against the Pirates and Tribe, he's going to think he's still in triple-A.
Impressive debut. That curve is nasty, good looking future.Gangrel wrote:Strasburg = WOW
And this is only from watching the highlights online. 101 mph fastball? a 97 mph sinker? A filthy looking curve?
14 Ks in your debut and a win will almost make him worth the 15 mil contract!
Course, now to see if it stays this way or hitters figure him out.
hitters cannot figure this type of repitoire. Well, not unless the hitter's name is Ted WilliamsGangrel wrote:Strasburg = WOW

There are quite a few sites that criticize his mechanics and how poor they are. Here's one of my favorite sites:Gangrel wrote:Ya, that's the biggie. A guy at work said he expects Stras to need Tommy John surgery in a year or two. I dunno..... seemed pretty strong to me!
It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure.
And now you know why Steve Phillips was fired as GM of the Mets and fired from ESPN,(along with his infedelity)vinny-b wrote:from my NYY site: (file under: Steve Phillips)
