All the videos you see posted are of the cool plays, no one is showing you videos of all the wonky plays. I've see guys after bump into each other and fall to the ground. I've seen guys go down because the engine thinks that foot should trip me up. Granted the ratio is like 70-80
% cool plays to head scratchers.
It's cool tech but some people are blowing it way out of proportion. Anyone who is going to give an honest opinion of this game is going to tell you it's innovative, it's cool but it still feels like early technology.
I liken it to the first High Heat game on the PC, you knew the basis was there for something very special but it needed more time in the oven. That is how I feel about BB, it's really cool and can be fun but if I was told this could be my only football game this year I would say no.
If this was your only football game you wouldn't have the choice to say no. I don't even know what that statement is meant to prove. Madden was our only football game and it was that or nothing. Well I guess the competition was NCAA in a way.
As for seeing the wonky stuff, there's a lot of videos out there showing the wonky stuff. I saw a vid where the OL got in the way of the QB, the QB jumped to get out of the way and then got spun around by the OL, resulting in a sack/tackle. Wonky yes, realistic...yes and no. Crazy stuff happens in football but that's never really conveyed in Madden. Crazy stuff in Madden, happens as a glitch and one side (hum or CPU) gets cheated.
And there are more full half videos on you tube showing off the game. I see the wonkiness once in a while...and it's not every play or every video. If it doesn't happen too often to ruin the game then it will add a bit of excitement and freshness to every game. Something that would never happen in Madden.
One other thing, in this youtube era, would we see vid after vid of stupid AI stuff. The OS boards are full of cynical gamers that have nothing better to do than to break down demos, vids and screen shots. If the gameplay was that bad, there would be an outcry. As it stands, the problems are ints, camera, special teams and AI difficulty. I just think if things were that bad with BB, there would be more people saying stay away.
As for "cool tech", cool tech is the promo vids of BB a year ago. Cool tech is tackle alley. Making a game that gets physics mostly right and provides a foundation for future years, is more than cool tech.
What is it that we get out of Madden that's so rewarding. Realistic gameplay...not really. Realistic franchise mode...not really. Some sort of sense that each time you play a game it's engrossing and makes you want more...not really. Madden is like generic beer, you'll drink it if that's the only thing you have and it will get you drunk if you drink enough of it but you certainly don't enjoy it. Madden gets the job done...but no one really loves Madden. It's not like NHL, NFL 2k5, The Show, the games that people love because they are fun, engrossing and realistic.
As a foundation to build upon, it sure seems they have a solid foundation to add things like fighting for extra yards.
Maybe BB will fail in the end. Success of BB is needed to keep pressure Madden but also to give us choices. And if BB succeeds could you imagine what hockey and other sports would look like with this engine?
