I played a quick free roam with randoms last night, and one dude had gotten up to a crazy level, like 50, and called in zebra donkeys for all of us. It was hilarious.

Anyone go to the movie theatre? The flick I saw was definitely the most disturbing silent film ever recorded, lol.

The effects of the various tonics? I saw that one and got a kick out of it. I wonder how many different movies they have. (I only watched one)

Yeah, the tonic flick was great. I especially loved how one guy got a cocaine tonic and started humping a telegraph pole...

So I'm not sure how we did it but we someone managed to get into Gang mode in a private room, which I thought was impossible.

If you enter via the "Gang Matches" portal in Free Roam it will try to match you up with a gang at the same point. If there is no other gang (and there seldom is), it will just include your posse.

Ok well that makes sense.

We had two posses in our free roam so I guess that is how we got the gang matches in private.

wzup partners. My first impressions were initially mixed

compare to GTA IV, everything looks far away. Objects, items, other people, etc.

this is due to the camera angle. Unlike the GTA titles, Rockstar omitted the SELECT button function (BACK button on the 360) to select different camera angles. Unfortunate, as in addition to everything feeling distant & far away, the default camera angle also makes John Marsten look tiny. It makes one feel they are controlling a StarWars action figure, instead of themselves. Uncharted 2 was very much the same. Setting the TV to zoom helps, however this also eliminates the radar map and any tutorial messages which appear on screen.

also, did not know at the time, however the game (ps3 version) was actually playing at a low resolution on my unit. However, after un-checking the 1080i/1080p boxes in the ps3 system settings, the title is now playing at the optimum high resolution. Oddly, this is the only ps3 title in which have experienced this. I don't know if this may have to do with the all the various RDR 360 vs ps3 picture comparisons on the net. Whichever the case, the difference is night/day. If you have a ps3 and dissapointed in the graphics for RDR, you need to check this setting.

the positives?

while still attempting to get used to the camera angle/'smaller' main character, in contrast riding horseback is fine. Compare to GTA IV, the travel is more enjoyable then by car. And more 'personal' as well. And the scenery :)

Rockstar have outdid themselves (and all other developers) with the animals. Props to Rockstar on this. A new standard

voice acting. The Sheriff in Amarillo. Wow. Another new standard?

the unscripted events look to be done well. In 2 cross-country travels, have experienced a few different events. Person attacked via coyotes being one (which i know everyone have viewed already :)

if popularity of the title maintains, it wouldn't suprise me to see Rockstar release DLC map material. I know they didn't with GTA IV, but RDR is different. Based on the landscape, and the look of the map etc. It is only a hunch however. If Rockstar does release DLC, i hope they will give us the extra camera angles which they left out from GTA

Nice impressions Vinny. I succumbed to the hype and picked up the game and so far am also quite impressed. Night time looks really sweet. I too have the PS3 version and am a bit disappointed in the graphics. However, I do have 1080i/1080p checked, so maybe by unchecking them it will make a little bit of a difference.

Vinny, that's a very good point about the cameras. It's been bothering me as well in the 1p game, and my story I related earlier about accidentally aiming my rifle at the fiddle player stemmed from me trying to see more in the way of details by zooming in using the weapon aim.

dan: thanks. Definitely try changing the setting.

for me, the game was definitely running at 480p before making that settings change.

derek: feel you. At times, i have done the same. A good way to get one's head blown-off

don't know why Rockstar changed this. Maybe trying to capture a certain authentic/tv movie theme? That said, why not let the player have the option

to me GTA IV controls were fine. Even better, if every game had the default control layout and camera angles of Uncharted 1, i would never complain of another vidgame

Weird...the default camera angle isn't bothering me at all...I don't even notice an issue with it. Of course now that you all mention it, I'll get home tonight and all of the sudden I will notice. Thanks dicks!

These are my single player impressions...no spoilers.

After opening up all three areas, I have to say that the blending of every type of American west scenery is pretty amazing. If you go from Tall Trees (snowy tall rockies) to the white desert in the far bottom left of mexico, Rockstar did an amazing job of putting together this world.

For as amazing job the scenery is, the story and gameplay mechanics does not life up to the environment you are put in. Rockstar has a money generating formula and basically they slapped the GTA 4 system on the old west. The problem is it doesn't quite fit in the old west. There's no need to steal a horse when you can just whistle and get one. What's the point in robbing people if it only nets you about $5 dollars. And why shot and kill everybody when it has no real point to the main story line or really has much to do with being an outlaw? It's just the developers had to put this in because it's a GTA game.

Rockstar were the right people to make the scenery but the wrong people to make the story. It's essentially GTA 4: Old West. Which isn't bad but when you really get going, you almost wish for more Old West and less GTA4. In going through the story, I'm not done yet, but I wanted more stuff in old western movies like bank robberies, calvery, indians, mines, gold, shoot-out in towns, cattle things like that.

There's a game out there that would capture the scenery like Red Dead but mix in the openness of a what you could do in the old west.

Now the story isn't bad but when you get near to the end, you want more old west stuff to do. I wish Rockstar spent more time creating more lands and things to do in those lands. Hunting is fun and there should be more activities like that, such as gold digging, cattle rustling, etc.

For me, the RDR environment is probably one of the most impressive things I've seen in gaming. But it needed more than GTA 4 to show it off. Sadly, RDR didn't do anything revolutionary, when you think about, outside of redoing the old west. The gameplay is far too close to GTA 4, which leaves me wanting more old west.

Maybe because the year is 1910 and $5 is really more like $110 today? Just throwing that out there.

It's some really good s***, I suppose...

I have no qualms whatsoever with the 'formula' of RDR/GTA. In fact, it feels better to me in RDR than it ever did in GTA-less 'by the numbers' and more a feeling of better integration. I'm not stealing a cab just to do a cab minigame, or an ambulance, or a firetruck, just to play some silly minigame. Horseshoes feel completely a part of the world, and an understandable diversion. As does hunting, poker, blackjack, and, yes, even Five Finger Fillet.

I love the camera pulled back a bit, because you get more of the real star of the show-the vistas. Good grief, they are breathtaking at times. The sense of scale is off the charts. I mean, really, how much more imagination is required to create such a beautiful, natural world vs. a replica of NYC? No grids, no set placement, just wide open spaces. I love it.

I love the way the story has played out thus far. Love the quirkiness of some of the characters. The marshall is a favorite of many so far, and I agree. Some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. The lip synching is superb, as is much of the facial expression.

I'm not terribly far into the story, as I've been totally sucked into MP, but I love every minute of what I've done so far. I'm being a complete good guy this play through; I might try to be a total black hat the next time, but I never have much luck with that-it's just not comfortable for me. Which brings up another point: I'm glad that I can FINALLY be a stand up guy in a Rockstar game. I don't have to be a drug dealing moron working for a damned syndicate or mob family. That appeals to me.

So I have nothing but good things to say about this game. The overall package is too good for me to nitpick little things...

both yourself and Teal will prolly be very interested in 'LA Noire' in the future (if you're not already, that is). However that's a tale of another game/another day

JRod: thanks for posting the takes, brother

not trying to nitpick this point. However, far as the money factor. It was my hope that money in RDR would indeed be difficult to come by.

for instance, i liked the beginning parts of GTA IV when you have no paper. It forces one to actually live out the type of existence attempted to be portrayed in the game.

unfortunately, 3-Leaf Clover (aka Bank Robbery mission) completely ends this state of being. At which point money in the game resembles that of Germany post-WWI - useless. What is the point in missions rewarding the player cash or taking part in various criminal activiities outside the main story, if the money has no value and there is nothing to buy?

I'm def trying to be a good guy! It's a first for a rockstar game. That said, I've my dark side is starting to show now I that I have lasso... I like how I can go into multiplayer to really wreak some havoc. I do look forward to re-starting & being a total ass the 2nd time through.

edit: anyone kill a bear yet? I had one trapped between some rocks & put about 10 shots into it & nothing happened.

Killed lots of bears--once with a knife

No idea what you were doing, maybe it was bugged. They only take one solid shot to the head to drop.

Maybe it was the "stuck in some rocks" thing that was doing it.

So I finally got a chance to play a bit of the game today, and I am very impressed. It's very good so far, even though I am struggling to steer my horse very well. It's about what I expected, which is to say an excellent game with great visuals and fun gameplay, lots of character, and a real sense of a massive and open world. There came a point pretty early on where I was downright confused as to what to do - hunt animals? take a bounty? do a mission? Just wander around and explore, looking for hidden secrets or passer-by missions? That was a wonderful moment, as odd as that may seem. It feels to me so far, and I'm barely starting out, that there is no end to what there is to do. Sure the various challenges, like hunting or whatever, have an end, but right now that end feels so, so far away.

I can't wait to get in some MP with you guys. Maybe Monday or Tuesday I'll be able to do so.
