Why can't the BBC put Croft on TV instead of Legard? I'm listening to the race on 5 Live and it's a slam dunk. The 5 Live crew calls a much, much better race with the exception of Brundle.
edit: I would like to mention what a great job Anthony Davidson has done as well. He could be the next Brundle. He definitely has a career commenting on races.
Two possible reasons for it. It's widely rumoured that somebody on BBC's TV team has a problem with Crofty that put the Beeb off having them in the same broadcast, though I don't know who or why. It's also apparent from his work on GP2 for ITV in 2008 that he's not, or wasn't at that time, a particularly good TV commentator. Then again, neither is Jonathan Legard, and there was a 5 year gap between his last 5 Live commentary and his first BBC TV effort. The best man for the job is Ben Edwards, who as far as I know wasn't even considered for the position, which is about par for the course where the BBC are concerned.
There are far worse than Legard (Eurosport and Motors TV in particular mine a rich seam of rubbish, though some of them - I'm looking particularly at you, Carlton Kirby - are strangely enjoyable all the same), but his habit of delaying a Brundle contribution until it's no longer relevant grates, as does his over-reliance on stock phrases. Play a drinking game next time you hear him call a qualifying session - say a shot of Jagermeister every time you hear one of the following:
- Battle has been joined!
- He's on a charge...
- Driving for the line
- Can he do anything about it?
- Is it gonna be enough?
You'll be pissed as a newt by the middle of Q2.
