worthwhile to go from vista to windows 7 (yes/no?) and...
fellas,
trust the advice from this site, instead of random internet
1) is it worth bothering to go from Vista (with all updates) to Windows 7? My pc needs are basic. On a somewhat related note, this new pc is capable of running pc games which never tried in the past (Mafia 1, No One Lives Forever, etc). Would Vista generally be better for past titles. Or is this subject basically hit & miss/trial and error?
2) bloatware. Any tips to dump/eliminate? Or simply go to control panel and uninstall. By dumping each unneeded program, one by one? Prefer to remove all programs from the HD which don't need, to improve performance
3) trying to locate the setting for amount of info displayed on screen at one time (the 100%, 125%, 150% setting). Not been able to locate it (unless Windows Vista changed this to DPI scaling), however DPI scaling seems like something different. Anyway, the default setting for info/script/graphics on screen when internet browsing is way too tiny. To remedy this, been selecting view tab in Firefox tab, and manually clicking zoom a few times for each site i navigate. This 'remedy' or lowering screen resolution, is the only solution have found. Prefer not to lower screen resolution. Don't know where the 100%/125%/150% page setting went to (which Windows XP featured)
4) with the complete AVG software and all windows updates, are 'anti-malware/spyware' bytes also necessary? If yes, any particular link i need to check? After visiting OS, this shut down my former notebook 2 times.
apologize for this post, if this info was already covered. Thank you

In Windows Vista and Windows 7 if you click on the desktop then hold down the CTRL key and then scroll with the mouse wheel you can change the size of the desktop icons.vinny-b wrote:then it looks like windows 7, it is. Thanks
regarding how large websites are displayed on the monitor. Finally discovered this can be changed by holding down control and hitting the + key. Amazing what a little perseverance can do
: )

edit: If you plan to use your computer for the basics buy the Windows 7 Premium Upgrade Edition.
have Vista Ultimate on this pc.Rodster wrote:If you plan to use your computer for the basics buy the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Edition.
based on the info have checked, it looks like Windows 7 Ultimate is the one i am "suppose" to purchase. However, don't want to pay the $200
this being a new pc, would it be practical to install Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade (instead of Ultimate)? In other words, the only data i put on this hard drive is AVG. As long as AVG and all necessary laptop drivers will carry over after installing Windows 7, i would be good

Upgrading one OS doesn't require you match it, i.e. Vista Ultimate for 7 Ultimate. The only three features Ultimate gets you is:vinny-b wrote:have Vista Ultimate on this pc.Rodster wrote:If you plan to use your computer for the basics buy the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Edition.

1) Bit Locker "Data Encryption"
2) Disk Imaging and Backup
3) Language Packs
Some of those are also on Windows 7 Pro. That's why Windows 7 Premium Upgrade is probably the better all around choice for you. You can snag a copy for around a $100 on Newegg.com or Amazon. Or if your daring like me you can legally build a Windows 7 disc for free and buy a key from ebay for like $20 bones hoping MS doesn't shut it down.

this pc is 32 bit Vista. If RAM is bumped from 2gb to 4gb, can i install Windows 7 at 64 bit?

Use a 64 bit OS if:vinny-b wrote: this pc is 32 bit Vista. If RAM is bumped from 2gb to 4gb, can i install Windows 7 at 64 bit?
a) You're running a dual core CPU that takes advantage of Virtualization Technology.
b) If you have 4GB of ram or more.
To check what type of CPU you have you can run CPUID.
