It certainly does make any slope look cheap, doesn't it? I guess it's supposed to guide the skiiers better but it's just ugly. I went back to the last winter Olympics skiing highlights and I realized that Torino had the same thing.Spooky wrote:Was wondering the same thing last night. I'm sure it's for visibility. If it starts snowing, they don't want the guys that could see to have a big advantage. This way, everyone can see it, even if there is snow falling at the time of their run and the visibility goes down a bit.10spro wrote:It certainly does make any slope look cheap, doesn't it? Yeah, I love the snowboard cross event too, it's just like SSX!pk500 wrote:Agree. I love boardercross. You want to keep the Olympics relevant you need to stay with the times. All the snow boarding events are worthwhile in my opinion.
To me, one of the the most memorable events from Torino was when that American chick showboated herself right out of a gold medal right before the finish line.
She must have been thinking of what Brazell always said, "Tricks equal boost, boost equals speed!"
I guess today's the day she tries to redeem herself, four years later. I bet she races a little more conservatively this time around.
Definitely visibility, but less the snow itself than the flat light when the sky is overcast. The flat light make it difficult for skiiers to pick out the rolls and bumps on the course and the marking help to define those a little better. At 140 km/h running over a roll or bump that takes the skiiers by surprise can really throw them off and could even result in some pretty bad crashes. The CBC commentators were remarking on the advantage that some of the later skiiers in the first group had with the improved visibility after the sun came out.dbdynsty25 wrote:I'm sure it's for visibility. I think it's a very interesting sport, too.
That's one of the beauties of the Olympics: It features interesting sports that you rarely see on TV at any other time. A nice antidote to the steady diet of baseball, hockey, football, baseball, golf and racing you see 24/7 on American TV.

Heard on the radio that they're getting the best ratings since Lillehammer, whenever that was.
So expect more of the same, including the next summer games.
NBC is said to pay more for TV rights than the rest of the world combined -- kind of like US paying more for pharmaceuticals. So they're going to use a lot of filler during the 2 weeks.
Well you know ESPN and ABC will be smarter about featuring the best games for the WC.

Bode Miller was actually mentioning that his run was slightly different because it was overcast compared to earlier runs in the sun.dougb wrote:Definitely visibility, but less the snow itself than the flat light when the sky is overcast. If there's one Sport I just won't mind watching... it's curling. Seriously. And there's plenty of coverage here every winter but I just can dig it. I rather watch woman's hockey despite the blow outs and this is something that the IOC should seriously consider in future Olympics. Other than the awesome USA-Canada rivalry (the Russians are close), there should be a mercy rule for some nations. Game 1 the other night between Canada and Slovakia:Zlax45 wrote:I am loving the curling...I am not kidding!
Canada 18 - Slovakia 0
Mind you, there are some pretty good looking ladies throwing the rock around in this Olympics, that I might just change my mind.
'94. My College classmate, luger Cammy Myler carried the US flag for those opening ceremonies. I always got a little nervous watching her go down the track, but good lord I never thought she could have been killed. I'm still pretty stunned by that poor Georgian athlete.wco81 wrote:Heard on the radio that they're getting the best ratings since Lillehammer, whenever that was.
Im not going to bet but if anyone was interested here are the odds to win hockey gold. At least one set anyway.

I'd just like to give a BIG f*** you to NBC for showing f***in women's curling on CNBC instead of the Canada/Norway hockey game. After the curling match finally ended they went to a full commercial break, came back and did a one-minute women's curling postgame, then did another full commercial break, then finally started showing the hockey game with 2 f***in minutes left in the period. Thanks a lot NBC you bunch of f***in assholes.
Except they were showing it from about 12' to go in the 1st (after the Womens Hockey USA v. Russia game was done) on MSNBC until 8pm EST when Olberman's show came on.toonarmy wrote:I'd just like to give a BIG f*** you to NBC for showing f***in women's curling on CNBC instead of the Canada/Norway hockey game. But other than that, I agree with you! And I really enjoyed the curling as I was cooking dinner, even though the USA Women pissed it away.
They werent showing womens curling. They were showing US womens curling...I know the US women probably dont have any chance to win the gold but this isnt about that. This is about US viewers and what NBC thinks they would rather watch.toonarmy wrote:I'd just like to give a BIG f*** you to NBC for showing f***in women's curling on CNBC instead of the Canada/Norway hockey game. By showing what they did it is very apparent that NBC thinks we are the assholes.
EDIT:My apologies to the women curlers. They do have some shot at 16-1.

I turned it over to MSNBC several times and never saw it. I guess I was in meltdown mode by the time it came on MSNBC.Zeppo wrote:Except they were showing it from about 12' to go in the 1st (after the Womens Hockey USA v. The little darlings at NBC could have flashed a message on the CNBC screen a few times to the poor saps sitting there waiting and learning how curling is scored.toonarmy wrote:I turned it over to MSNBC several times and never saw it.
