The presentation is much improved with the menus much easier to navigate than the last couple of years. The CL and Master league are better too, albeit not a big jump on the latter mode but with all the scouting and finances at your display, it's still the best SP mode IMO. I do see players reacting better to other players position too and as Toon suggested the AI reacts well, although I prefer the overall fluidity of Fifa better.

Keepers can be really good but I've seen also a few funny moments that makes you say, ugh?

Become a Legend is still here, an improvement overall for Konami, especially on the visual side.

A lot of things piss me off, like the poor refereeing, but it does definitely bring back some of the old PES magic that was gone on next-gen. I haven't had any desire to fire up FIFA since the PES release.

Anyone else out there with the US version that might be interested in a tournament/league?

I think the poor refereeing is cool. It adds realism. They even miss some pretty obvious calls on out of bounds plays. Overall I am still having a blast with PES.

I have not seen a slider for game speed. You must have really had a problem with past PES games because this game plays slow compared to every past PES game. The developers mentioned in interviews that 2010 is the slowest PES ever. I am finding the game speed to be really good. With the more realistic space given by the defenders, the slower pace allows for really good plays to be set up.
Yep...PES10 is much slower than FIFA....almost unbearably slow for me. With that being said though I think i'm digging PES10 more than I am FIFA. The last few editions of PES have played about 10 times as fast..

I picked this up last night after playing the demo numerous times....wow what a sweet game....was up until 2am. I kept playing both demos of PES and FIFA trying to figure out what game to get. In my mind....I knew that I found the PES demo to be more fun but I kept thinking about the licensing with FIFA because I really would have liked to have the official EPL and MLS. However in the end it came down to gameplay and ball physics and the full version does not disappoint. Oh and right off the bat...I just had to try and create the new AC St. Louis soccer team thats slated to begin play in 2010 in the newly formed NASL league which will hopefully be sanctioned as the 2nd division here in the states. Not to bad considering it's my first attempt.

I got this for christmas from my parents, you know, because I'm still 12. The master league is so much improved I can't believe it. they're doing things they should have done years ago (start in 1st div, include div 2 in cup, allow for customizing league in ML, simulation).

I don't have as much time to play as I used to and stuff like this allows me to get deeper into a ML. '09 frustrated me making me slog thru 2nd division.

I'm a little surprised none of the masters of this series haven't posted more on it here.

blub,

I am fed up with single player Fifa (not so much because of gameplay but because of the broken manager mode) so will finally be picking up PES/WE. Do you recommend getting it on PS3 or Xbox 360?

EDIT:
Just thinking how times have changed - just a few years ago I would have had not only both the PS3 and 360 versions but would have also imported the Japanese version too. Still, some of the more positive comments have me hopeful.

I hated the PES 2010 demo, I last enjoyed the series when PES 5 was current and the only reason I got the full game was that I had some spare store credit, nothing else to buy and a desperate hope that the full game might be at least tolerable.

I can't stop playing the bloody thing. I just lost 4 on the spin in my first Master League season, including defeats to Man City and Chelsea in which I cheered every time I touched the ball, and still came away smiling. PES handles the goalmouth scrambles at both ends better than FIFA, and scoring feels like an achievement again, just like it used to. As in times of old, it pulls from within me an involuntary "GET IN!" whenever Castolo accidentally hits the target.

Even the peculiar stuff, like the goal I scored against Everton that saw the ball deflect off Yobo and take a touch off Jagielka's outstretched boot that nutmegged his own goalie Howard, doesn't make me curse. I've no idea if it's bugged to hell, if the AI are simpletons or what. All I know is that it's fun, and that's enough.

I am with you Simo. This game has something that keeps me coming for more, not to mention the master league mode. The faces on some dudes are just outstanding and I love playing the matches on the vertical camera. However I do find that after the patch I get my ass handed by the CPU on Professional level, as I can hardly get three passes together without the other guys breathing on my neck. The pace is quicker than Fifa, wished there was an option for that, but overall I've been digging it this year.

Macca, I have the PS3 version myself, I prefer this title on the PS controller.

Macca,

Pick up the PS3 version. I'm on the PS3 and greatly prefer the controller for footie. I'm like the several of the others in that I got fed up with FIFA on single player due to the rubbish Manager Mode (bugs galore) but also I enjoy the sheer unpredictability of PES as well as the much better implemented player and team individuality.

Best wishes,

Doug

it's weird. I score more on 10 than 09 when I play against the cpu by myself, yet they still seem more satisfying. in 09, I often felt I got lucky. after only a few days, I can say I definitely like the gameplay better on this version of PES (on ps3).

also, 10 games into my ML, I've already scored on 2 free kicks (one over the wall and one under). I probably can count on one hand how many I scored in 6 months of pes09. it makes fouls near the box mean something again.

Hey Squidly, what mods are you using this year? Are you using the gaming access mods again? I received an email from them about RC4 mod but I haven't followed the development of the patches this year so I don't know where to start. :?

I picked up Pro Evo 360 the other day and am enjoying it.

I only wish I had a way to get the kits and option files on my 360. I don't have the time/energy to find a download kit.

gamingaccess patch is what I use. I was an evolution patch fanboy, but the gaming access ones are so much easier to use and every bit as good. STill loving this game.

Fellas,

I love FIFA online, but am bored with the game offline. I really enjoyed the PES demo for the 360. That being said, any reason not to buy PES? Are there any technical issues I should know about, like Framerate?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

anyone have a favorite formation they are using? I'm just not getting any support in the box when I'm in my opponents third.

No reason at all not to buy it, mate. The visuals are fine and the frame rate rock solid, while the gameplay feels better than the demo did to me (didn't get along with the demo at all. Felt a bit wooden, but I'd been playing a lot of the FIFA 10 demo prior to it which might not have helped). The best way I can put it is that after a couple of poor years, PES feels like football again.

The commentary is the same reliable old crap, though. Mind, even that has a certain charm to it. It still brings a smile to my face when a clearance is greeted with, "Wonderfully tucked away!" and it becomes obvious that the fellas coding the audio heard the word 'away' and didn't bother thinking about the context of it.

Due to a misunderstanding of the game's financial side, I found myself entering the January transfer window of my first Master League season in dire need of cash. Stremer's gone. Ordaz, Minanda, Ximelez gone. Ivarov gone. Macco, Ruskin...it felt like saying goodbye to old buddies. I always used to do a Master League on Top Player, 5 star or whatever, starting out with the default team, and doing the same in PES 2010 I find myself caring about that default team like I used to in the old days. Ettori scored his first of the season in the game before the window, and I found myself saying out loud that he really deserved it after the season he'd had to date.

I got half a million for him the week after that. Broke my bloody heart, it did. Already, though, I've got players promoted from the youth ranks starting to establish their own characters. Shimizu is a plucky little attacking midfielder, Kooijstra is happy to break up attacks and pass the ball off to the more naturally gifted men around, and Zahafi is a willing worker. No end product, but he works hard.

I'm beginning to think I might need some kind of help, you know.

Edit: Squiddy, the 3-5-2 the default ML squad use works alright. With the attack/defence indicator set to the second highest position I've always got people available in the box.

Ok. I picked this up the other day (360) and have been getting a tad frustrated with a few things.

Is it me or is the defender ALWAYS faster than the ball carrier?

How does one perform subtle dribbling moves to get past defenders? I've tried about everything with no luck. On top of that it seems maintaining possession near defenders is very tough. (Fifa has the LB button that can pretty much stop you and allow a quick change of direction to avoid defenders)

What about that AI defense around their area.. it seems as if the minute I am within a few paces of the box, 3 guys close down on me.

PK's? I'm either down the middle or am missing way wide.

Guys.. I just need a few tips / tweaks. Any help would be appreciated. I'm playing on top player and Pro difficulties.

I've always found simply cutting 90º without any special moves or button presses will get me past most defenders. Also, if you hold the turbo button but are not touching any directional controls (the L-stick or D-pad) you can let the defender get closer and closer and then he gets too close; then when you do touch the directional control, you get a nice push past him and should be clear. It's easier to do this if you are not moving; you can stop the ball and stand over it, and then hold the turbo down while standing, and when the defender makes his stab to get to the ball, you can tap the D-pad and go right past him.

Also, the timing and rhythm of turbo/ no turbo helps a lot. As with FIFA, holding the turbo button down will make it very hard to change direction or make timely touches of the ball. Moving without the turbo, or better yet, moving without the directional control, will keep the ball close so when you do touch the D-pad the next time, the touch is instant (once the ball is pushed ahead, you can let go of all directional control and the player will follow the ball and get close to it, so it's better to 'tap, tap, tap' the D-pad or L-stick rather than holding it down all the time; FIFA is the same way).

If you spaz on the LB (I think it is) or the RT (if that's not the turbo. . . ) you can get some nice stepovers that will sometimes help get your marker unbalanced, and then the nice turbo and/or change of direction will leave him in your dust, but you have to have a decent amount of space to do this, otherwise it is very easy for the ball to be tackled away.

I got this for the PS3 now that I have one because playing it with the D-pad makes all the difference in the world, and the 360 D-pads stink something awful.

I've always found it so much easier and more realistic to get by guys in the PES games than in FIFA, which seems to require use of special moves to get past defenders. In PES, it should be easy enough to do with changes of direction and timing of the turbo, and especially waiting for the defender to commit, and then making your move past him.

EDIT: Also, if you have a lot of space in front of you, the ol' double-tap of the D-pad (or L-stick) in the direction you are running while you have turbo pressed will do a 'super turbo' push of the ball ahead, way ahead, and your guy can run faster then than if he has the ball at his feet with no turbo, or even a normal turbo push of the ball. This may help you with the 'I have the ball and everyone is faster than I am' thing, maybe a little.

So, I played this a lot the last few days. Earlier, I couldn't figure out how to get the old default stiffs for the ML, but I did recently and got started. I miss the ability to steal three good players right off the bat (I really want to grab Jozy but oh well), but for what ever reason I am having way more success with these bozos than I can ever remember.

It seems some of my old dribbling tricks don't work quite the same, such as the angled 90 degree cut, but it's hard to tell really because my guys are so bad. I like the new player acquisition setup a lot and I think the other little adjustmets to the ML are great. It's a little more realistic in some ways, but it's still a game, a fun 'build the greatest ream ever!' adventure.

One weird thing that sucks is that there are only 16 Americans in my ML. None of the players who play in Germany are in, even though their fake-name counterparts are on the National team; they still aren't in the ML.

Also I am getting tons of down purple arrows all the time. It's not unusual for me to have several players starting with the down, 'i have the flu' arrows because the entire bench will have them too. What's up with that? Am I doing something I shouldn't, such as using all the training points all the time? At least once in a while I can get some starters with orange or green arrows, but it's like I have an epidic of down purple arrows going on.

Being new to the PS3 side of the story, I'm wondering if anyone knows if there are any zany option files out there with updated rosters or the EPL kits and so on that work for PS3 and how to get them. Also one of the things I love most about the ML is mixing in the classic players, but I'm never sure from year to year how to unlock them, so if anyone's come across any of that I'd love some clues.

Is there anything one can do with replays, a là EA's media stuff? Some of the goals I've scored with these stiffs have just left me stunned and yelping for joy. I'd love to have the more fluid fouls of old WE9 back as there are yet again way too few fouls overall, almost no accidental fouls, and it's just about impossible to deliberately cause a simple foul (like to push just too hard enough to get the whistle, if you get me). But outside of that, I'd say it's definitely an on year for PES.
