Raiders 23, Jets 13

The Raiders knew heading into their AFC Divisional Playoff game against the 12-4 Jets that the New York defense would give them fits all game.

The Jets didn't disappoint.

The usually-efficient Raiders could muster just 213 yards against the Jets in the contest, while holes in the coverage allowed Jets QB Mark Sanchez to do some damage with big gains through the air.

Sanchez would throw for 219 yards on the day, completing passes of 52, 33, and a handful of 14-to-19 yard completions against the Oakland secondary.

"We knew going in that they liked to throw to their backs out of the backfield, as their leading receivers were Thomas Jones and Leon Washington", Raiders SS Tyvon Branch said after the game. "We tried to take away any sort of flats game today, and it ended up biting us the few times we tried to run a zone to do so".

When the Raiders zone worked, it worked beautifully, twice snagging Sanchez passes for interceptions as a Raiders defender jumped the route as it came through his zone. Two other times Branch read a post route and jumped it, snaring a pair of picks in 1-on-1 coverage.

Branch was named player of the game, with 5 solo tackles and 2 interceptions in the contest.

"After we took away the swing passes, he seemed to really like to call a package that was a 3WR 2RB set, but they spread the field out with an empty backfield", Branch commented. "After they hit us a few times with the matchup of one of our LB's on Stuckey in the slot, we knew we had to do something about it. We just made plays when we had to".

Making plays was the story of the game for the Raiders. It started with the opening kickoff, a 100-yard return by Justin Miller through a gaping hole right up the middle. After the interception by Thomas Howard on the ensuing drive, it looked like Oakland was about to take a commanding 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter. JaMarcus Russell hit on a big play action to Zach Miller and the Raiders were in business just outside the Jets' 20.

Then Darren McFadden fumbled away the ball--the first of two fumbles on the day (both in scoring range).

The Jets used their newfound momentum to go on an efficient scoring drive, beating the cover 2 zone with a beautiful TD pass from Sanchez to Leon Washington down the sideline and a quick tie at 7 apiece.

After that, the defense for Oakland started to clamp down, forcing the Jets to make big plays to try to stay alive. The Raiders didn't do much offensively, with JaMarcus Russell completing only 4 of 9 passes for 64 yards in the first half. Jeff Garcia replaced him coming out of the halftime break and was wonderfully efficient, going 4-for-5 for 70 yards.

But this game came down to turnovers (4 Sanchez interceptions vs. 2 McFadden fumbles) and capitalizing on them. The Raiders were able to knock through all 3 of their FG attempts, while Jets kicker Jay Feely missed his only try as the first half expired.

Had the Jets been able to get any semblance of a running attack going (Thomas Jones had 9 carries for 11 yards, and Tony Richardson contributed 1 for -1), things might have been different. But once the Raiders start snaring interceptions and playing with a lead, it's a tall task to get back in front. They were able to start hitting the runs (McFadden had 16 carries for 65 yards on the day) and then the play action behind it, allowing Darrius Heyward-Bey to snare 3 passes for 94 yards behind the linebackers.

That allowed the Raiders to run into right into an AFC Championship matchup with either the Dolphins or the Titans.

***********************************************

GG Slumber. I was pretty bummed that the mics suddenly didn't work after the reboot. Not sure if you could hear me or not--I couldn't hear a thing. So many ways this game could have gone. The dropped pass near the end of the first half with your wideout behind the coverage, a misfire by JaMarcus to a wide open DHB down the sideline, another drop by the Jets, a fumble by McFadden--it seemed to be the game of "who wants to lose more".

But playing that defense is ridiculous. I was scouting the roster before the game trying to figure out a way to attack it...hmm....95 OVR Kris Jenkins in the middle--ok, no runs up the gut. Rhodes at 90's player, as well as Revis. Ok so no free plays in the passing game. Bart Scott is a wrecking ball....that pretty much left counters and hope for overpursuit or a stretch play to the outside and PA off of that. Had to play it about as close to the vest as I could, and still had 2 easy picks get dropped (one I swear I never even saw a defender hidden right behind the ref....thought it was a wide open pass lol).

But it was a good game, and look forward to future matchups next season and beyond.

In a game in which Steven Jackson was knocked out early in the second qtr and Adrian Peterson was knocked out early in the second half, the Vikings held off a desperate last minute drive to defeat the Rams 28-20.

The game, which saw four lead changes and the exchange of long TD runs by the two teams stars, surprisingly had the Rams leading 17-14 at the end of the first half. The Second half was to be a different story however. The injury to SJ seemed to suck the life out of the Ram offense as they could only muster 3 points in the 2nd half. One can only attribute this to poor coaching as the team seemed completely unprepared for the situation.

The very well coached Vikings on the other hand, didnt seem to miss a beat, as they took the lead for good in the 3rd qtr and extended it late in the 4th as the legs of Chester Taylor set up the play action passing of Tavaris Jackson who connected on 2 TD passes. Excellent playcalling had the Rams completely off balance.

After the Vikings extended the lead to 28-20 the Rams still had 1:26 without any time outs to try and save the season. It was not to be however. The team now operating without SJ or Avery(I think he was in the locker room throwing up as the pressure was just too much for his tender soul) did manage a pair of first downs and to move the ball to the Viking 12. That is where the clock ran out on the Rams as the entire offense waited lined up and ready to spike the ball for at least 10 seconds with Marc Bulger no where to be found. The last play started with 33 seconds to go...It was bizarre and to say the least.

Apparently, the contractually obligated to EA, Marc Bulger was frozen in a cutscene as he celebrated a pass completion somewhere up the field. His future with the team is uncertain at this time.

Great game Data. Well earned victory as the stats will point out. Thats twice this season you took me down in my dome.
I enjoyed the season and Im looking forward to the next one.
Hey XXXIV, thanks for doing the write-up, yesterday got away from me. Great game once again. Have you been able to locate Bulger yet? Odd to say the least.

GREAT write up for our game Slumberland. Included some of my highlights made it enjoyable for me.

Edwards dropping that pass late summed it up for me. He will be available for someone, might as well be your Jets. I hate that asshole!

I was bored at work :P

Marc Bulger?...No one has seen him yet. Im thinking hes still stuck in that EA vortex up the field somewhere celebrating that completion.

This is a little late coming but big props to TheTruth's Atlanta Falcons.

The Eagles were poised to make a run deep into the NFC playoffs, but Michael Turner was simply too much. Hats off to you my friend.

Rob, watchout, you're facing a damn good team right now. They're playing well in all phases.

Titans squeak by the Fins

Post by tmdba37 »

Titans 35 Dolphins 31

The Titans punched their ticket for the AFC Title Game as they snuck by the Dolphins in Tuesday Night Football DSP Playoff Action.

In a wild game that saw neither team punt and only saw two drives not result in points (not counting the possessions at the end of each half). . .the Titans rode Chris Johnson into the next round as he gained 186 yards on 16 carries and found the endzone Four Times. . .

The Dolphins Offense did the best they could without all-world back Ronnie Brown--Pat Cobbs took the Brown spot and Ricky Williams stayed in his wing position in the Dolphins Wildcat and it was somewhat successful as Williams gained 69 yards on 6 carries and had three touchdowns. . .

Seen as a key match up going into the game, this epic battle really ended up hinging on the Titans Rushing Offense beating the Dolphins Run Defense. . .the Titans ended up rolling up 243 yards and Coach Jared couldn't find an adjustment for Johnson running the ball outside. . .it would haunt the Fins all the way through the 4th Quarter. . .

Another key moment of the game happened with about 3:30 left in the 2nd Quarter. . .the Dolphins decided to kick a field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 3 from the 24 and that ended up being the only scoring drive not ending with 7 points. . .and as Coach Jared figured at the time, this was the difference on the scoreboard at the end of the game.

The First half saw six scoring drives as both teams grinded it out and moved the ball well to score on each full possession. . .the highlights were a 61 yard TD for Williams to tie the game at 7-7 and Chris Johnson's counter-punch of a 59 yard run to give the Titans a 21-10 lead. . .the Dolphins would add a late Ted Ginn TD Reception to go into the half 21-17.

In the second half, the Dolphins took the opening kickoff and quickly marched down the field and took their first lead of the game at 24-21 after Ricky Williams' second TD.

The Titans would get the ball back and once again score on a 14 yard TD to Kenny Britt to make it 28-24. . .

With about four minutes left in the 4th Quarter, the Titans Defense would finally get a stop and intercept Chad Pennington (16-19, 218 Yards, 1TD) and seemingly set themselves up to close out the game. . .but after a first down the Dolphins wisely used some timeouts and forced the Titans into a 3rd and 4. . .the Titans thought they might sneak Vince Young into the game and have him get the key first down and move that much closer to finish the game out. . .disaster struck though and The Dolphins picked off Young's attempt to hit Johnson in the flat. . .this INT Return led to Williams third and final score of the game, suddenly, the Fins were up 31-28 and looking good. . .

The Titans with about 2:20 left in the quarter, picked themselves off the ground and marched back down the field getting a key 22 yard reception to Britt as well as a number of key first down runs by both LenDale White and Johnson which eventually led them back into the redzone and with less than a minute the Titans calmly ran behind their tackles and finally into the endzone as Chris Johnson scored his fourth and final TD from 4 yards out with 16 seconds left to make it a 35-31 score. . .

The Dolphins tried a couple of desperation passes to end the game, but it was not to be in Miami this time and the Titans survive this slugfest to play the Oakland Raiders later in the week. . .

(having problems uploading highlights still, will try and post more later)

In the Dolphins improbable 15-1 season, one of their strengths was their defense. They had the second best scoring defense in the league (behind the Jets), buoyed by the strengths of their passing defense (excellent pass rushers and a solid secondary) and inside run defense. Although some pundits had Miami #1 in the power rankings and one of the Super Bowl favorites, their coach was very, very worried. Not necessarily because of the loss of Ronnie Brown, but because their Achilles heel all season has been giving up big outside runs to teams with solid offensive lines. (See Michael Turner's 7 carries for 103 yards, or DeAngelo Williams' 20 carries for 106 yards). Miami knew that the Titans, with their 97 and 92 rated tackles and 88 rated guard would be a problem if Tennessee ran outside. And they did. Often.

Miami was unable to stop outside runs with the tackles pulling, with Miami's slow-ish linebackers not able to get to the edge, and their secondary being blocked into oblivion by Tennessee's offensive line. Chris Johnson had 186 yards and 4 touchdowns on only 16 carries.

Fortunately for the Dolphins, Tennessee couldn't stop Miami's short passing attack, and the game ended up coming down to a decision that would haunt Miami. With a 4th and 3 on the Tennessse 12 and down 14-7, Miami's coach seriously considered going for it, as he already knew this game was going to be a track meet. However, hoping to get a defensive stop at some point in the game, they decided to play conservatively and go for the field goal. This decision likely ended up being a mistake, as the possession summary shows:

TEN: 6 possessions, 5 TDs, 1 INT
MIA: 6 possessions, 4 TDs, 1 FG, 1 INT

In the fourth quarter, the game looked lost for Miami as down 28-24, Pennington (who was otherwise superb going 16-19 with 218 yards passing), he got picked off on his only deep pass of the game. Looking to run down the clock, Vontae Davis intercepted a Vince Young pass and returned it to the Tennessee 7 with 2:30 left in the game.

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

On the first play after the interception, Ricky Williams ran through the Tennessee defense for a 7 yard touchdown plunge to take a 31-28 lead with 2:20 left. However, Tennessee still had plenty of time, and all three timeouts left.

<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>

The key play on the drive was a 22 yard reception to Britt with an additional 15 yard facemask penalty. That brought Tennessee to the Miami 36 with two minutes left, giving them plenty of time to rely on their run game. And as earlier, Miami was unable to stop Tennessee's outside runs, capped off by a 4 yard Chris Johnson touchdown run with only 16 seconds remaining. Miami made it to the Tennessee 37 with time running out, but Davone Bess got sucked into a stay-inbounds tackle animations instead of being knocked out of downs, and the clock ran out.

The Dolphins are now looking to next season, hoping to get some semblance of talent in the draft. When asked if they'd be active in the trade market, the Miami GM said: "Hahahahahahaha. Who on Earth, besides Ronnie Brown, Ted Ginn, and Joey Porter, has any trade value on this team? And how on earth could I lose those players? Face it, we are a team of scrubs. Maybe we should have gone 2-14, just to get some freakin' talent here. I need a drink."

Jared,

Great game and season. . .clearly, going 15-1 in our league is a feat in itself, like we talked about last night, the upcoming 2010 Season in the AFC should be quite the Battle Royale. . .

Excellent write up. . .It's kind of scary looking at that Interception, wow, was that a bad idea. . .and I totally forgot about the 15-yard facemask on the Britt catch. . .that was pretty lucky on my part

I must admit I am still quite drained after our Epic Battle last night. . .especially since I figured it's be a grind and it became a track meet straight away.

After thinking about it some more, I really think you still made the right decision with that FG Attempt. With the information you had it really made sense, you had a great D all year and they had just schooled the Titans 28-7 a few weeks earlier, so you had every right to think that you'd get a stop. . .I certainly figured you'd probably get us at some point. . .I think the flipside of the argument is probably worth looking at. . .if I stop you on 4th and then go on to score it's then 21-7 and that might have changed the entire landscape. . .

I definitely look forward to our upcoming rematch sometime next season, that should be a blast with 12 min quarters. . .

Thanks
-Todd

It was definitely the best game I'd ever played and the best game that I have ever been a part of. . .I half joked with Jared that the next step is figuring out how to air some of these games online instead of just the highlights. . .

At the end of the season I actually recorded the game I played against Dallas. I think it would have helped me had I played him again, but alas I could not beat the dreaded Falcons and Michael Turner.

I just set it up on a tripod and uploaded it to my PC. I wasnt bad but I'd like a better solution.

There are rumors that some future interation of a Live Dashboard update or possibly the new MS console will have built in screen shot and video capture.

But in allow seriousness how hard would it be for EA to let people spectate a game?

You're one and done? Man, too many guys dropping out. How sad. :(

Actually I'm a little pissed that EA has made pass coverage so difficult, but I'm even more disappointed that I haven't figured out a way to deal with it. I wonder how much of it falls on my 70's something rated linebackers?

I'm not sure what the f*** just happened but I'm not happy. After coming back from down 14-0 in the first five minutes of the game I missed a winning field goal with 2 seconds left, sending our game to overtime. I got the kickoff and on the first play in overtime I had Chester Taylor racing down the sideline with no one in front of him when our game disco'd.

I finished out the game and won. Not sure what we do but I know that I can't play again tonight.
