Felt good to get back in the action. Jets prevail over the Pats at the eternal sunset of Gillette Stadium, 31-7, despite Brady and Co. really having the stronger day offensively. Turnovers were the difference, however, with Darrelle Revis netting two pick-sixes of impressive length and Mark Sanchez not making any bonehead mistakes.
Raiders 52, Bengals 0
In one of the most lopsided, boring games in history, the CPU Bengals go down 52-0 to the Raiders in Oakland. This comes one week after a 34-0 drubbing of the Chiefs.
Carson Palmer was horrible, and never found a way to solve the Raiders' zone defense. He started out red hot, with an opening drive that consumed more than half the first quarter as the Raiders played their traditional man/press. The Bengals drove 65 yards before Oakland switched up to multiple zone coverages, and Palmer was intercepted for the first time. They had nothing to show for the long, sustained opening drive.
After that, the Bengals never moved the ball consistently all day, finishing with a total of 156 offensive yards.
Conversely, the Raiders gained 357 yards on the day--203 rushing, marking their third straight 200-yard rushing day since changing coaches midseason.
Darren McFadden carried the ball 12 times for 110 yards and 3 TD's before leaving in the third quarter on a cart with a hip pointer. Whether he can return any time soon is anyone's guess.
Michael Bush filled in well, with 19 carries for 81 yards (4.2 avg) as the Raiders ran down the clock. Oakland led 35-0 at halftime and 48-0 after 3.
JaMarcus Russell wasn't asked to do much (which is the only way to succeed in Oakland), throwing just 14 times, completing 9 of them for 154 yards and 2 TD's. His favorite target by far was Darrius Heyward-Bey, who caught 4 passes for a whopping 114 yards and a score (28.5 avg). When it's clicking, it's clicking.
For Cincinnati, it wasn't.
Carson Palmer finished the day a woeful 13 for 24, 129 yards, with no touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
Oakland MLB Kirk Morrison was the recipient of 3 of those turnovers, as Palmer tried to use the underneath drag and crossing routes to burn the Raiders zone. Instead, Morrison burned Palmer. Repeatedly.
Oakland was 8-for-9 on third down in the contest, while Cincy was 0-for-4.
The Raiders didn't turn the ball over and won the turnover battle at +5.
The Raiders are now 6-4 and next week travel to BHOWARD's 7-2 Cowboys, which have a bone to pick with the Raiders over their coache's choice of words in the Power Rankings.
The Raiders will be ready, and are hoping to simply keep it close against the extremely talented Cowboys.

Cowboys head coach BHoward advised the team today not to look for any bulletin board material for motivation, telling the team "Our focus is on Washington, we will not look towards any other opponent besides the Redskins. Despite what any other organization may think we are self motivated and realize anything can happen on any given Sunday."

The Browns lose to the Lions on the road.
No game recap. BS is all I can say. The comeback of the AI is ridiculous as always! Kick returns, QB running for 60 yards in final seconds of the game. Forced fumbles being recovered with no effort. I could go on and on.
Hate to sound like a whiner but it gets old to have the CPU down and have the superman AI flip a switch.
Oh well, I have a lot of AI games left, so maybe I will get redemption. I am not holding my breath though!

The CPU strips like crazy when they're behind. It doesn't seem disproportionately effective, because while it does result in fumbles it also yields a lot of missed tackles.
The only zaniness I've seen from the CPU is the occassional ridiculous hot streak from mediocre QB's. Stooges like Sage Rosenfels reeling off 12 straight completions, that sort of thing.

Right, but usually that's attributed to guys being hyper-aggressive trying to "put the CPU away" or making an extra move. I tend to hold the Right Bumper like crazy and don't end up blitzing, forcing them to go 10 or 12 plays down the field to score.
They get so aggressive that the flood gates usually open--I notch 2 or 3 picks at the end of games like that typically, and just run out the clock with a vanilla, boring offense.
It's when I try to make something happen (a sack, a FF, etc) that I usually get burned.

maybe it was my fault, but when a rookie QB,who sucks, starts completing 9 or 10 passes (hadn't completed that many all game) and then with a very soft dime zone takes off and runs 60 some yards BREAKING 3 TACKLES before getting tackled at the one is bullshit!
I know you are very good at this game Terry and it shows, but there is no way crap like this should happen IMO.
I am over it though, others are losing to the CPU over some crappy stuff. Let see how my team faces adversity now. Losing to Detroit is embarassing, then again, they have 5 wins now

It happens in real life that way too, just ask the Steelers. Hell, I had the Bengals come back to win a game I was in total control of. The second time I played them it was even at half but I put them away. It's definitely frustrating when it happens but I would hardly call it comeback AI since it doesn't happen all of the time. That's just part of sports and I'm glad it's in there. I wouldn't have said the same thing right after that Bengals game but after some time has passed it's easier to view it that way.
Now you've put the pressure back on me to beat Badgun's Colts. I still think the remaining schedule favors you but we'll see what happens. At least we'll have fun with a division race down the stretch.

Cowboys 34, Redskins 24
Another 3 interception performance from Jason Campbell produced another loss for the Redskins as they fall to the headset-free Cowboys, 34-24. After the teams had to restart the game because of a disconnect in the 2nd quarter the first time around, the second game featured a lot more offense for the home side, and Randle El's first ever kick off return for a TD.
The Cowboys received four turnovers, one a fumble on a Campbell scramble when he tried to slide but didn't, and the Redskins produced zero. The Skins outgained the 'Boys 281 to 223, gaining 14 first downs to 8, with 90 rushing yards to 59 despite being behind for most of the game. They were also 5 for 9 on third downs, while the hosts went 2 for 7. But Washington was only in the red zone once, on the first drive of the game, while the Cowboys visited the promised land four times.
Portis was his normal self, gaining 7.7 yards per carry for only 54 yards, while Felix Jones went for 28 yds on 12 carries, a 2.3 yard per carry average. T. Choice should have been the weapon of choice out of the backfield for the Cowboys, as he went for 37 yards on only 4 carries. The two tight ends led all receivers, with Whitten gaining 59 yds on his 5 catches, while Cooley also caught 5 balls for 86 yds. Randle El caught 4 balls for 37, and Moss caught 3 for 33, but Campbell ended the day with a 49.4 passer rating thanks to 3 INTs. Romo was 10 for 17 for 3TDs and no INTs for a rating of 130.9
The game wasn't nearly as close as the final score, as the Redskins were frustrated all afternoon with poor decision making, and bad ball control. The Redskins fall to 6-4, putting their slim playoff hopes to bed, while the Cowboys improve to 8-2. Next up, the Redskins face the division leading Eagles, and the Cowboys prepare to host the newly invigorated Raiders.
Good game, Gamer. This second time around it just wasn't my game. I'm too demoralized and tired to deal with any highlights.

Dolphins drop their first against the CPU Patriots, 32-31
The Miami Dolphins, who did not have an answer for the power running game of DeAngelo Williams, the receiving of Steve Smith, and the stout run defense of the Panthers, lost their first game of the season to the CPU Panthers, 32-31.
The Panthers begun the game with a 55-yard touchdown strike to Steve Smith, who spun out of the grasp of two tacklers to run to the end zone. Miami punted on their first drive, but was fortunate to recover a fumble by the Carolina punt returner for their first score. Carolina, behind the power running game of DeAngelo Williams, drove down the field to score on a 17-yard catch and run by D. Williams. On the ensuing kickoff, Ted Ginn returned the ball 94 yards to the Carolina 6. After a Ricky Williams touchdown, Miami tied the score. On their next drive, Carolina would punt and Miami drove to the Carolina 5. However, the offense stalled and they would have to settle for a field goal to take a 17-14 lead.
Carolina tied the game at 17 with a short Kasay field goal, and Miami would next take the lead on a 62-yard Ricky Williams broken tackle scamper. Kasay next kicked a 47-yarder to make it 24-20, but Ted Ginn returned the ensuing kickoff 105 yards to take what seemed to be a solid 31-20 Miami lead. However, on the next drive DeAngelo Williams got a crucial first down breaking a tackle on 3rd and 10, and then ran for 25 yards on an all important 4th and inches. Delhomme next found Steve Smith on a 30-yard touchdown pass that went through the cornerback's hands, and the game was 31-26.
Miami attempted to run out the clock, but could only get one first down. Then, with 4th and 8 on the Carolina 44 with 1:35 remaining (and no timeouts for Carolina), Miami (knowing how difficult it had been to stop Carolina's offense so far) decided to go for it. Ted Ginn couldn't hold onto a difficult reception, and Miami turned the ball over on downs.
Carolina then marched down the field, scoring on an 18-yard pass with 55 seconds remaining to go up 32-31. This left plenty of time for Miami to get in field goal range; but an ill-advised pass to Davone Bess was picked off on the first play of the drive, and Carolina was victorious.
Jake Delhomme was 17/26 with 283 yards passing, 4 TDs and no INTs. Deangelo Williams had 23 carries for 106 yards. For the Dolphins, Ted Ginn set an NFL record with 373 kickoff return yards and a touchdown. Pennington was 12/20 with 114 yards passing, 0 TDs and 2 INTs. Ronnie Brown rushed for only 19 yards and a fumble. Miami next faces division rivals Buffalo.

Kerry Collins hit tight end Bo Scaife for a 6-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left to give the Tennessee Titans a 31-28 come-from-behind win against the Houston Texans.
In a wild game, Houston and Tennessee traded the lead several times. The Texans opened with a long drive lasting nearly six minutes and ending with Andre Johnson pulling in a Matt Schaub pass for a 6-yard touchdown. The Titans answered quickly on the following drive when Chris Johnson faked out three defenders en route to a 54-yard touchdown run. Johnson gave the Houston defense trouble all game as he racked up 107 yards on the ground and 45 through the air.
In the second quarter, the Titans capitalized on a Texans turnover when Owen Daniels fumbled the ball. Chris Johnson would score again on a 1-yard run, making the game 14-7 in favor of the Titans. But the Texans mounted another long touchdown drive, capping it with a one-yard plunge by fullback Vontae Leach to tie it at 14-14. However, the Titans drove quickly and managed to set up a field goal to take a 17-14 lead into the half.
Receiving the ball, Tennessee owned the third quarter, moving on a 14-play, 56-yard drive that took all eight minutes, punching it in on a 1-yard run by Lendale White.
Despite staring at a 24-14 deficit, the Texans rallied and moved the ball on a quick 1:15 drive, with running back Ryan Moats (filling in for the injured Steve Slaton) scoring on a 5-yard run to make it 24-21.
On the ensuing Titans possession, disaster struck for Tennessee:

Collins floated a pass over his intended receiver and into the arms of safety Eugene Wilson, who took the ball 50 yards for a touchdown and a 28-24 Texans lead with 4:07 to play.
Collins would make amends, though, as he again moved the Titans down the field, along with the help of quarterback Vince Young. After converting a 4th and 2 at their own 32, Tennessee mixed runs and passes, eating up yards and time as the pushed toward the Houston endzone. Finally, the Texans defense held, putting the Titans in a 4th and 12 at the Houston 36. But Collins would not be denied:

The veteran quarterback beat the Houston blitz and found receiver Nate Washington for a 22-yard gain. On third and goal from the six, he then found Scaife for the go-ahead score:

Houston had two timeouts left, but the comeback ended quickly when Tennessee picked off a Matt Schaub pass.
The win keeps Tennessee in the lead over Jacksonville in the AFC South.

Good game Zeppo.
Big game for rookie DeAngelo Smith with a fumble recovery and an INT returned for a touchdown. The concern for the Boys coming into the game was how they would hold up without RB Marion Barber. While Jones and Choice weren't outstanding, they did just enough. The story of the game was the contrast of the two qb's, with Campbell turning over the ball 4 times with the 3 int's and losing the aforementioned fumble, while Romo played mistake free football stepping up his game in the absence of Barber, with a 130.9 passing rating and three td's to 3 different receivers. Boys score 24 points in the 2nd quarter to take control of the game.
Here are a few highights:

The conference leading Cowboys (8-2 overall, 7-1 vs NFC) go for their fifth win in a row against the rejuvenated Raiders.

I had my eyes on the skins/boys game for obvious reasons. Looks like the Cowboys are the class of the division but the Giants are right there.
After the 7-0 start I've (Eagles) have dropped 3 straight. Tonight robvarak's Bears rallied in the second half to beat me with a last second FG. Once again the Eagles were victimized with poor special teams play as Devin Hester returned a 98yd kickoff.
The reeling Eagles face the desperate Redskins. A loss for either team would be devastating for their playoff chances.

The Bears played a quintessential Lovie Smith game to eek out a fortunate victory over the visiting Eagles. Despite dominating possession at a 2:1 clip, the Eagles saw the Bears special teams and opportunistic defense deliver the day for their home fans. It was certainly more luck than anything else that saw the Bears improve to 8-2.
The Eagles made their intent known early with the first of several methodical and relentless drives and capping it with a 15-yd TD run by Brian Westbrook.
<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>
The Bears moved the ball well on their opening possession but were only able to come away with a FG after being stopped on the 6yd line with a fine defensive stand by the Eagles.
The Eagles unleashed another of their steamroller drives on their very next drive, with Westbrook finding paydirt again this time from 8yds out.
The Bears looked to answer and were fortunate to convert a 3rd and long when Jay Cutler was able to complete a pass across the middle to Devin Hester despite being hit as he threw. Hester put on the jets and went 63yds for the Bears first TD. The score came very much against the run of play.
<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>
The Bears defense got up off the mat on the ensuing drive, with Nathan Vasher picking off an errant McNabb throw. DeSean Jackson made a huge play, saving 4 points by running down Vasher, as the Bears would have to close out the half with only a FG.
<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>
The Eagles were back to their time-sapping ways in the 3rd quarter with LeSean McCoy capping yet another epic drive with bruising 27-yd TD run. Special teams again saved the Bears bacon when Hester returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for his league-leading 6th return TD of the season.
Amazingly for a game which had seen only two punts prior to this point, neither team would score for nearly the remainder of the game. The Eagles continued to grind out drives, but the Bears finally managed to force a punt or two. The Bears faced a huge decision with a 4th and short on their own 44-yd line and just under 6 minutes remaining. Given the Eagles ability to chew up clock, it may have been wise to go for it, but the Bears elected to punt the ball.
Philadelphia nearly made the Bears pay for their timidity, but the game came down to a crucial play. The Eagles led 21-20 with 3:30 left and faced a 3rd and 2. They went to Westbrook, their bread and butter, but Mark Anderson burst through the line and stuffed the Eagles star for a one-yard loss.
<embed src="http://cdn.www.easports.com/static/110. ... player.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="height=360&width=640&file=http://cdn.content.easports.com/media2/ ... ="></embed>
The Bears took the ball and never gave it back. Mixing medium-ranged passes and some effective Matt Forte runs, the Bears were able to get the ball to the Eagles goal line. The home team essentially ran out the clock inside the 5, and Robbie Gould kicked the game winning field goal with seconds remaining. Westbrook was the game MVP with 64-yds on 12 attempts and 2 TDs. Forte paced the limited but efficient Bears attack, gaining 104yds on 15 carries. McNabb was a ridiculously efficient 15/18, albeit for just 179 yards on the Neil O'Donnell plan. Cutler followed the Ken Stabler model and went just 6/11, but did garner 139yds on those 6 completions.
Both teams face tough games against divisional rivals next week, with the Eagles facing off against the Redskins and the Bears travelling to the rollerdome to face the Vikings.
Great, great game eman. I was so incredibly lucky. If anything your relentlessness was your undoing, as it was hard for you to score more than once per quarter with those long drives. Not to mentiont he fluke Hester reception and the KO return. I'm afraid that my luck will balance out should we meet again. Good luck down the road.

Definitely, that was a 12 rounder full of offense and long drives galore. . .Brando70 wrote:Todd, awesome game tonight. That was really a lot of fun.
The good thing for you though is if the trend holds true into season 2. . .you should win the next game 35-31. . .

Thanks for the excellent send up. . .definitely another classic from the AFC South!

In Minneapolis, the lead story would be:
Vikings Trounce Seahawks, Peterson Hurt
The Vikings raced to a quick 21-0 lead on Seattle in Minneapolis with Tarvaris Jackson leading the offense. Unfortunately, Adrian Peterson was injured in the game (twice, actually). He came back from a bruised sternum in the 2nd quarter and then suffered a torn labrum a few plays later. He's out for two weeks, meaning that the Vikings will be short-handed for a crucial game against Chicago this week.
That said, I'm going to be out of town this weekend Rob. Are you available for the Vikes/Bears tomorrow night at about 10pm central? Let me know.

Same here! Having the replays really adds to the experience. I had such a good time with the game with eman. He's a great player, and a good sport since I was very late getting to the game.Brando70 wrote:Sounds like there were some incredible games this week. I really enjoy reading the recaps and seeing highlights.
Loved that block during the Randle El return.
That 3rd and short play was serious nail-biting time, and the kind of thing that makes the game and this franchise so much fun.

Curse Mark Anderson!
Seriously, that was a great game. I had a good time until the final 4 seconds.
Andy Reid has his team working overtime on special teams coverage and 3rd down defense this week. "We cant afford to let Randle El do to us what Devin Hester did". Donovan McNabb has been instructed to avoid throwing out routes for the remainder of the season.
The Redskins will face an angry Eagles bunch this week. The loser will likely be out of the playoff race given the records of the other NFC East teams. Time to rally the troops.
