Anyone notice how the announcers are keying on match ups now?

If i'm the home team and the other side has their scoring line out, they comment when i put out my checkers how "it's a good move" etc.......

I love that you can choose your starting line this year, and that it appears they finally got "home team changes last" working!

I think match ups may be even more important this year with the "scare engine"......
Yep, I love that I can start my 2nd, 3rd, or 4th line as well as whatever defense pairing I want out there.

Changed to "auto-aim" from manual and it seems to help. I also lowered the CPU reaction speed one. I actually score a goal on All-Star last night. I also bumped up my goalie reaction slider a couple notches, as the CPU has an unfair advantage IMO of being able to pass the puck at precision speed and score in a blink of an eye. It definitely seemed to help, and I still gave up an average of three goals a game. That's better from the five goal average I was experiencing the other night.

At least it seems the sliders work!

So I entered the free 'Patrick Kane boost pack' that I received for pre-ordering the game only to find out that I actually need to update my stick, skates, etc in order to make the boost work. It would have been just nice to add the boost on my current equipment but those EA guys don't miss a beat do they?

Of course I could wait and earn the achievements the hard way, but from what I see so far in my OTP matches with randoms, it'll be a long while to catch up with their souped up equipment.

It's a great marketing ploy, but it's taking the fun out of the purist dudes like myself that like to earn things the hard way.

Definitely a love-hate relationship with the concept. It's quite rewarding to play a game and then see that I've unlocked something, only to find out that it looks ridiculous and I'd never wear it.

It is tough to compete those people who bought the boost packs, it sucks that EA is going for $$$ with these. And since so many people bought them (at least every other team I have played all bought them), it will only encourage them to do this every year.

I am playing through BAP season with rookie difficulty and all sliders in favor of human with 4 minute period and play the first 40 games (only 3rd period) so I can unlock most of these boost. Need to do 3 seasons worth of this tho.... Shouldn't take too long when I do this as each game takes about 5 minutes to play.

I guess that's one way of doing it, don't know if I have the patience nor time to do so.

I'm still not sold on this. Compared to 09, this seems to have been taken out of the oven a few minutes early.

It sucks but it's a brilliant business move. EA knows their audience, we are not their target market, we HATE their target market. Companies have been testing the micro-transaction route since the Horse Armor pack was released for Oblivion. I don't ever think a piece of DLC should translate to online play, but since you can unlock this stuff for free you can't say they have an advantage because you can get it without paying.

Personally I would never pay for this stuff, I might consider the AFL pack for Madden and that is a big maybe. But I am a sucker for DLC, I must have spent over $300 on my music games alone.

Actually, you can sim to all but the last 5 minutes of a game (for a 4 minute period, that translate to about 1+ minute of play time). You can do 40 games pretty quickly that way.

That goalie reaction slider along with the shooting power and accuracy sliders really work if you need them. I'm playing on default hardcore (penalties max) at 10 minutes and my scores were way too low, but playing with these 3 sliders a bit has made all the difference in the world. I also had to switch to assisted passing, although I coupled that with lowering my passing accuracy. It's great fun now. I'm seeing realistic power play opportunities for the first time in a long time in any hockey game...5 min majors, double minors, matching minors, etc.

Dan, are you on PS3? We should try to play some time.

I haven't seen many of the OTP regulars online playing this game. Are people disappointed with it?

I also have a confession to make. I spent $4 upgrading my character.

I unlocked a stick with 2 boost slots by getting to +20 with my EASHL character and gloves with 3 boost slots by winning a game with Montreal centennial team, and given the choice between spending tedious hours on a scheme like WillHunting to get some usable upgrades, I just said screw it and paid $4 for +5 puck control and +5 passing. No doubt this is the calculation EA is counting on most players to make. At least I did 'earn' a +5 slapshot boost by getting all A's in a EASHL game.

Would be perfect for everyone to quit playing NHL10 after I broke my morals and bought some upgrades. :?

Leebo,

I'm up for playing online sometime, definitely. I'm not real sure I'll be strong enough competition for you, but I'll give it a go. Let me know when you're generally on.

Naples, I have so many games that I haven't digged in yet and knowing that I will see the same boys eventually in OTP, I sort of have this game in the 'not priority' list. :) Let's see, 'Shift' is still under wraps, haven't touch my "Madden" franchise for a awhile, my daughter wants 'The Beatles' and played a bit of Halo ODST yesterday.

But coming back to Hockey, I am having a better time actually with the 2K's franchise product so far, maybe it's because of better AI, the smooth skating, variety of scores, etc.

Just about to leave for out of town again, ( that doesn't help) and I think like you, I'll eventually upgrade my stick and skates to take advantage of my 'Kane boost pack" code that I received. Willhunting's idea is great if you don't want to spend any more $$$ with EA.

Let me know if you see any quick difference to your old equipment after the upgrade.

So what's the general consensus on this game, as far as single player goes? It's hard for me to get a feel from reading the comments. Is it better than 09 or about the same? It doesn't sound like its a big step up.

From commentary, to graphics, to gameplay you won't see that much difference to 09. Do enjoy the battles along the board, the fighting is different and overall it plays a fine game of Hockey. Personally, because I played so much 09, it sort of feels like I've seen this movie already, and that's not bad at all, especially if you haven't played 09. For the reasons I mentioned to Naples above, I find 2K's game more of a novelty, and enjoying the franchise mode. Online is still fun, just tired of seeing so many golden skates and flashy helmets though.

I think 10 is an upgrade over 09 if you know what to look for. It won't hit you over the head, but there's things going on under the hood that weren't there before, like the intimidation, scrub players play like scrubs usually, board play, and smarter AI.

Last year I never ever had a 2 on 1 chance, in one of my first games of 10 I did because my player was smart enough to.

The game hopefully gets a patch tho, as on default the goalies stop any wrist shot unless it's a screen or rebound, and I think some of the teamstyles should change, as the wild aren't supposed to be a trap team this year, etc......

All in all I like it.

One thing I wish more EA Sports games did was include "Season Mode". I wish they brought that back to Madden and Live as well. I've never been a franchise person and when I first started playing Madden on the original Playstation was following my favorite team during the year with season mode.

I checked NHL 2K10 and couldn't find a season mode.

Anyone finding the CPU goalie on All Star to be better then your guys?

I have reaction time down and screen effect up for both, but at equal levels. I'm thinkin I may put my goalie back on the defaults....

I'm averaging 2 goals a game and the AI is scoring 4 or more on my goalie!

Yes, which is why I think on Pro it plays a more even game..

Same thing happened for me. I ended up evening the odds by turning the sliders a little more in favor of my goalie and I've had great results so far.

I have to say, the addition of the board pinning has taken this game to another stratosphere for me. I would hardly call this a minor upgrade or NHL 09.5. The board pinning has turned this into even more of a hockey game. Dump-and-chase is now a legitimate strategy where in the past it was pretty stupid. Initiating a scrum along the boards while you have the puck is an effective way of maintaining control of the puck in the offensive zone.

The only thing I'm not digging is the fact that the cpu zips the puck around too much at times. I've lowered cpu passing accuracy and it seems to have helped a little but there's still major room for improvement.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

Are folks using manual passing, or gone back to the standard stuff?

I'm trying to become proficient at manual, but I think it costs me scoring chances at times, as passes back to the point, etc miss their mark more often then they probably should.

We play on poker nights (usually tuesday or wednesday called by Zeppo), or occasionally have impromptu sessions if enough people happen to be online (usually 9pm to midnight eastern time).

Interesting.....

When I have the penalty slider set to the max (the general one, not for the AI or your teammates) my simmed games have tons of PPs.

When I turn it off, there are none.

I wouldn't have thought sliders had an impact on simmed games?????

I guess I will have to set it to a certain level for sims, and then max it out for an actual game i play.

I love this game.. bought 2k10 because I'm a hockey guy, but I'm going trade that back in towards Operation Flashpoint since I doubt I'll ever feel the need to put NHL 10 down to play some games of 2k10.

Beat SJ 6-5 and then lost to Toronto 1-0. Such a fun game to play!
