Are familiar with the English or soccer?
Honest to god this is all they do. Take the piss out of their rivals and are bitter about the other teams. They'll take the piss out of their own team at any time, even if they won something big. I wish I was lying but there's millions of Daves sitting across the pond. There's no such thing as lovable losers like the Cubs fan. They are surly losers but you know what, that's what relegation or the fear of it does to you.
Now I find it hilarious but that's me.
I guess, and this is just my perspective, that this is the difference between 'supporting a franchise' and 'following a club', with a few exceptions. As far as I am concerned, all players are just transient figures who are currently in the sacred sky blue and white. They can kiss the badge all they like, but we know that we'l be there long after they have moved on.
Spot on about relegation though....there's none of this 'F**k it, let's dump the payroll again a la Pittsburgh Pirates'...if you are dropping out of the Premier League, about 9.01am next Monday the bank manager will be on the blower, and there's no number 1 draft pick to con the faithful with.
Oh, and every single club in the league, right down to the depths, is fuelled primarily by competition, envy and hate - because that's the basics of sporting contests between localities, towns and cities in the UK since the 14th century, and old style 'ba games...beating your cross-town rivals was everything.
"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
