One thing that is scaring me is the goalie's A.I. On more than a couple occassions, my goalie will save a shot and then pass the puck very gingerly right out in front of the goal, not taking in to account that the opponent is skating nearby. That had lead to a goal against me which was quite frustrating.
I saw this twice last night when playing head to head against my brother. Haven't noticed it much in solo play yet.

Try putting the goal songs into the game - there is a thread over at OS on how to do it - really adds to the immersion. I've also put my own songs into the menu screens and when my team hits the ice. :)

It's concerning, no doubt. At one point, you will be tempted to get a better stick, glove, what not especially with the tougher requirements this year.

Just waiting for my flight, I was browsing thru the manual, receipts and I was just about to chunk away the 'Kane 88 Boost pack" offer sheet that came with the manual just for preordering the game. They give you a code, but after entering it on marketplace it said 'There is a problem with the offer associated with this code'.

I was curious as to what advantage I would get with my created player, but I guess I have to wait now...

As far as I can tell, you unlock equipment, which has boost slots.

Each boost slot can provide 1-5 point boosts in any given player skill. Of course those abilities must be unlocked too.

I also saw '[insert player role] boost packs,' which I guess replace distributable points earned as last year based on games played?

Just as bad as having to pay for these things is having to wear hideously ugly equipment while playing to utilize these advantages.

Last night after I left, I went in to the Edit Pro and I had 40 pts to use in each of the three areas. I had only played one random game and the private games.

It seems to be just like last year except a few differences, such as I could not fnd defensive or offensive awareness ratings. And the points are different, in that some attributes use 3 or 5 pts to go up 1, and of course once you get over 80 it gets more expensive. So the 40 pts I got kiang really more than the 15 pts you'd get last year for each level.

So I guess it's a combination of a tweaked attribute/experience growth like last year, and the addition of the equipment boosts.

How is the OTP setup this year?

Last year, EASHL games were the only ones ranked and you had to play with created players and the unique player angle.

Unranked OTP games used regular NHL player and you had the traditional overhead camera on the puck.

Are there still unranked OTP games with regular NHL players?

Are these golden boosts seen in unranked OTP games too or only the ranked EASHL games?

Yeah, I know the cards and earning boosts is still there like last year, I was just wondering if buying a boost pack for a player time is the equivalent of say getting your all-star card on day 1.

Seems to be similar to last year. Ranked games are with you BAP, but you do not need to use unique player camera angle (you definitely did not have to use the unique player angle last year either).

Unranked OTP is with real NHL players.

a few of questions:

1. Are we still limited to being part of one "club" team?

2. What game modes are these "skill" power-ups available in? Does this concern anyone for online games?

3. Where do you guys stand on this as far as a "must buy"? I loved 09 but am still not sold on $60.00 worth of improvements. Of course, good luck finding people playing otp in 09 these days.

2. Dunno, haven't played online yet, but I believe that the matching system will try to find your team a similarly ranked opponent, so eventually all of the "golden" boys should go to higher divisions while the Dragons face fellow cheapskate teams, no?

3. If you like hockey, it's a no brainer for me. I've only played a few games, but it just "feels" better to me. More weighty, pinning, passes that miss, etc etc.

If you read thru the various help menus that detail the changes within the game, i'm salivating if a lot of it is true.

GMs refusing to deal with you if you dick them around too much? Free agents not signing with you if your rep sucks? Teams looking at where they are in the standings *and how close they are to the playoffs* to determine trading?

Maybe I'm jsut a hockey geek, but all of the under the hood stuff (as long as it works that is) is enough for me to shell out the moolah for this.

I played about 6, 7 games online (community + club) and it is extremely laggy on almost every match. I even got lagged out on the last private game we played. Really frustrating, I don't even know if it is on my end or just EA's server.

I hope it gets fixed soon, because I had a lot of lag free (community) games on 09.

Actually, both the IGN and Gamespot reviews called out laggy online play for PS3 but not X360.

That's pretty bad because IIRC it's running off the EA servers and not XBL or PSN.

I hope so, although I don't really understand how that could be considering that games are peer to peer hosting (or are games hosted by EA servers?)

My understanding (unless this has changed recently) is that the EA servers host the matchup, then the game is P2P once it has started.

Frustration is building playing on All-Star. I played three games last night and failed to score a goal. I played all my games at the visitor's home arena, so perhaps there is a home advantage for the CPU. Either way, it was downright discouraging to see the CPU pass the puck tape to tape like a pinball and score goal after goal after goal. Whereas I struggle to get a pass to a team mate in front of the goal, the CPU has no problem doing so. My defenders just sit there and let them get separation, where they should aggressively be pushing them away. I even turned down the pass accuracy to 0 for the CPU and they still passed the puck with precision.

I suppose I'll drop my skill level down to Pro, but then it feels too easy to take the puck up the ice and get off a good shot. Still, I have to figure out a way to score. I haven't felt the need to dump and chase as it seems the CPU is always getting to the puck before me.

Can anyone provide some basic "Shootout" tips? I can't pull off a good basic deke with the right stick to save my life, so I am never able to score during the shootouts. Any tips for easy beginner moves that might get the light bulb to turn on for me? (The one in my head, although the one behind the goal would be nice too...)

That's what I thought, which is why it is worrisome because match making is fine (for the most part), but in game is lag city.

Play on AS and then tweak the sliders a bit. They did a really good job on slider settings and I'm sure there is one that will help your issue (forgot which one)

I lost 3-0 on AS, but I had plenty of chances I could not put away.. I just need more practice.

Here's a tip for dumping the puck.....

I find if i hold the RB down for a bit *beofre* jamming up on the RS, the puck floats a lot more in the air, therefore I have a better chance of making it into the zone to get the puck back....

If I just hit RB and the RS at the same time, it's usually a line drive that the AI easily gets to before me.

There is definitely a puck glitch in this game where nobody on the ice will touch the puck. i've seen it twice now and recorded it last night which i'll upload later. Basically everybody tries to get the puck but they can't..it's like a colision detection issue and this just isn't during board pinning...this was both teams following the puck down the ice. The best part about it though, after about a minute or so of nobody being able to touch the puck, the ref blew the whistle and Gary Thorne says "I have no clue why the whistle was blown there"

I would prefer to have Jim Hughson back for this franchise, Thorne and Clement while not bad, are getting too repetitious for my taste. I think the fact that the user has to aim better for a pass to be successful is a great addition to the game. Whether it's offline or online play, passes are not as crisp an automatic as the CPU ones. So far my litle gripe in the game.

Maybe it's a gameplay coding but those tic-tac-toe passes, tape to tape accuracy with the CPU is definitely a disadvantage when I play offline. Especially on AS. And being cornered in the blue line by a third or fourth liner is not very realistic when I have my top guys on the ice, with those sharp crisp passes, and the sliders attributes just don't seem to make a difference at this point.

It took me about 10 games to figure it out myself. :P

Anyone notice how the announcers are keying on match ups now?

If i'm the home team and the other side has their scoring line out, they comment when i put out my checkers how "it's a good move" etc.......

I love that you can choose your starting line this year, and that it appears they finally got "home team changes last" working!

I think match ups may be even more important this year with the "scare engine"......
