If you haven't already done so you HAVE to watch the skill stick tutorial. I didn't realize you can move your poke check around if you hold RB and move the RS. Man I'm such a noob:)

Naples39 wrote:I think the biggest problem for our team in the games I've played are that we don't react to the positioning of our teammates very well. IE, the puck goes to the offensive corner, 2 or 3 forwards go for it, or all 5 defenders attempt to block the pass to the slot and get beat by one pass. I think we need to spread out on offense and D, and then react to our teammates or talk more so we don't constantly have 2 players doing the same thing and leaving huge gaps in our positioning as a result.

I also think the dump and chase might work okay for us because most teams' forwards release very quickly (even on good teams), so if we can cause a turnover down low you almost always get a clean look at goal before the forwards come back and help on defense.
Dump and chase maybe the best option for us right now. Like G7 was mentioning , we tend to overcarry the puck in the offensive zone but we don't have the proper support when we lose the puck. Maybe we are overtrying at times.

I know personally I want to cover the RW or LW guy when I see them out of position, instead of just focusing in my own zone and play. Also, we are just getting killed in faceoffs, (I was just plain lousy last night) and that means controlling the puck. You can't control the game without the puck. Yes, it was laggy at times, but I don't buy that excuse alone. It's too bad that the game doens't offer you that option to switch in the middle of the game when one is struggling. I'd like to seew that in 2010.

I may want to change to the original classic controls, and see if that changes a bit things.

Yes, the D does seem to overcommit as well, but that's because we are behind the score most of the times and everyone wants to pinch in, to get that equalizer, to contribute. But in order to do that, we have to remind ourselves of our positions, our roles.

It was just that type of night yesterday, when we were up in the score, we had online issues and had to forfeit, why wasn't like that when we were getting wiped? Also on that game where we had eight goals against, we had a human goalie and the Frenchies didn't. If there's any consolation. :(

Let's hope we can do better in the future, but like 34 was saying last night, hey let's not feel too sorry for each other, we are all trying to contribute in a different way, we just have to execute and play more like a Team and we'll be OK.

Here is a taste if what I think.

We don't pass enough. Like FIFA, this game really rewards quick passing due to its mechanics. One-twos are golden, but everyone seems to want to stick handle a lot once they get it.

We don't get the puck deep nearly enough. Defending teams tend to crash into the slot and we reward them for it. I like to try to wrap the puck around the boards, so that opposite fwd should stay wide and on the boards to receive it.

On D we do get drawn into the corners way too much. Let them have it there, with maybe one guy going in, but we have to concentrate on passing lanes and the prime shooting spots rather than chasing the puck around.

Always head man the puck when in the neutral zone, but don't be afraid to cycle it back into our zone and use the Dmen to reset. Maybe one day well find the balls to hold it behind our own net and try an actual breakout with passing.

I guess the biggest things for me are that we need to pass quicker and more often and try more give and goes, and we must try more to get the puck deep behind the goal line as much as we can. The best way to take advantage of cherry pickers is to cycle it enough to take advantage of the fact that they're short in their d zone. But hey, I'm still waiting for us to actually get set up on a power play rather than rushing into the slot.

I may be on tonight after midnight, but I should be on a lot next week. I jjust love this OTP stuff!

I recognized that my game doesn't really fit well with 10pros as I always like to get the puck in front of the net while he really doesn't go to the places were I usually pass the puck to.

Just need to get used to his playing style as it is a big difference then G7's.

One thing i've noticed too much of is that we too often headman the puck in the neutral zone when our teammate is standing still at the blue. If the puck carrier has speed and open ice when crossing the center red go ahead and gain the zone and let your teammates fill in. We send ourselves off sides too often by trying to make a bad pass at the opposing blue.

Also once in the zone we MUST be sure forwards set up the triangle. If we don't have a well formed triangle at any given time then we aren't positioned well enough to A) move the puck around and B) have a backchecker in position to even up a rush the other way. If we can draw a straight line across all of our forwards in the zone then we're in bad shape.

This may sound ridiculous, but if anyone is serious enough to want to work on their game and would like some instruction, i'd be happy to run a controlled scrimmage some night to work on positioning in each zone, etc.

I don't think it is ridiculous. In fact, I think it is a testament to how far they've come that real world strategies are applicable in the game. We have definitely had stretches where our attention to fundamentals has resulted in sustained pressure or a big clear on defense. While the game is not perfect, it is pretty damn good and fun.

At the end of the day, with the size of the crowds we've had, I know people will be chomping at the bit to continue to get game action. However, a scrimmage like you suggested is not a bad idea if you can muster the interest.

Lol, you guys who were with me in the game against the A-Team, I stumbled upon them on HFBoards (in fact, HFBoards is in their team name but I hadn't noticed at game time). Turns out they are a top 10 overall as of right now (Div 1, 8th), so our win against them was fortuitous. I can't find the McLovin team in our recent results as I wanted to check out their record too.

In any case, just wanted to point out we can play high-ranked teams tough. Let's try to build off these games and get better as a team.

I'd be down to get some hockey schoolin. It'd be interesting to see how it would affect our results.

I think we've just touched on what needs to be a feature in NHL 2010: Team Practice.

We should be able to get the team together on the ice and work out plays/positioning and strategies that can be implemented in online games.

I'm a hockey god, but I'm happy to participate in the team scrimmages. ;-)

Unfortunately Saturday night we ran into a team that used a glitch to score 4 goals before I bailed (sorry about that guys but I have better things to do with my life than to sit there and play a bunch of glitchers)midway through the second period. I thought something was funny when they kept doing the same thing and hitting the post and then the shots started going in. The good news is that a human goalie would nullify the glitch. So word to the wise, don't play a game without a human goalie until this issue gets fixed, if it gets fixed.

I'd be more aggravated about it if I could replicate the glitch LOL And while all the goals seemed to beat the GK the same way, they were from different spots on the ice. I agree they were up to something, but I'll be damned if I could figure it out.

OTOH there was a noticable improvement in both play and results over the weekend. We're keeping almost every game close, allowing far, far fewer goals and generating chances. We even had a shutout last night (albeit with a CPU goalie).

All they kept doing was doing a stick move followed by a quick wrist shot. It seemed as if every time they did a stick move the goalie would commit and they'd wrist it to the opposite side. They might have been doing it from different spots on the ice (which actually scares the hell out of me since it will work anywhere) but they were doing the same thing over and over. As soon as they had a clear view of the net they'd flick the stick and then wrist it in. To make matters worse I couldn't hear any of you guys in chat. EA needs to patch this because it will ruin OTP with cpu goalies. Did you notice that in the pregame lobby as soon as they saw we didn't pick goalie that they said "Ha, we're going to kill you guys." If that was the first we saw of it then it won't be long before we keep seeing it.

Maybe this was already mentioned, but I found it cool that when I went to edit my Be a Pro player, I could select different radiuses (radiuie?) of skate blades, affecting speed, turning, etc. Also, that I could pick different sticks and blade patterns, with the game showing you what the pattern usually does (high, low, more accurate, etc.)

Myself, Rob and the rest of the DSP Hockey Goon Squad (TM) played 2 games tonight (before I bailed) - lost the first and won the second, but the highlite for me was the loss where we had NINETY HITS and TWENTY MINUTES in penalties. :)

I'm just happy I was able to connect to the games.
