That's the key with Guevara; can he keep playing like that over the long haul. He tends to fade in and out through the course of the season, and when he is in faded out mode, he is worthless, or even worse, actively destructive in the locker room. You also have to watch out for his childish baiting of the referee, and if someone can get into his head early in a match, he can end up taking himself out of the game trying to deal with his frustration.

But when he's on, he's one of the best in the league. Expect him to fade in the hot summer of the mid-season, and start to shine again as the playoffs approach. I wonder if he'll bother to learn English now that he's in a city where there surely aren't a lot of Spanish language street signs, or local news.

Thanks for the rundown Zepp - I was wondering how a guy who played like that was available for TFC to pick up. I have the impression that referee baiting is pretty endemic in Latin American soccer. Always tricky handling players with motivational problems - with Robert in the same dressing room it could get real interesting.

Still, it's a pleasure to watch someone with talent in an TFC uniform for the time being!

Best wishes,

Doug

Donovan is playing with a fire I haven't seen from him in several years. When he is motivated he is the best player in the league.

About the online game package, I've bought it 3 years running. It's only $20 for the season, so if you have any interest in catching games now and then you'll get your money's worth. The FSC broadcasts are always on TVU player as well for free.

dougb wrote: Watched Toronto FC yesterday on TV - what a difference Guevara makes in midfield!! The guy's out there and just looks head and shoulders better than 90% of the other players on both teams. It's also amazing how much of a load having him in midfield takes of their defense - hey, we can now keep the ball a bit and not hand it over immediately every time we get it. That free kick of Guevara's for his second goal was absolute class as well.

They keep playing like that and they're going to need to duct tape the stands together to keep the stadium from blowing apart.

Best wishes,

Yeah...the energy in the stadium was amazing yesterday. I also think that once Ricketts gets more comfortable with his teammates, he'll be hugely effective. And Sutton - looks great so far.

About Guevara - I think he's matured since his last stint in the MLS. Only time will tell. At least these goals and wins should keep him happy and motivated for a while.

Last night was a first: I actually enjoyed an MLS match -- Chivas vs. the Galaxy -- and was impressed with the quality of play.

I'm not trying to be a snob. I really enjoyed the match and was entertained. I plan to watch more MLS games now, especially after the Premiership season ends.

Take care,

I'll still be a snob. :D Seriously though I watched some of the Toronto game and was mildly pleased with the overall game. What I like about MLS is that Toronto being the only team currently in that league in Canada, is the exposure of the TV media so that casual fans and hardcore fans can judge for themselves.

But between Fubol Argentino, Spanish and Italian leagues and finally the EP, MLB is out of my radar for now.

I went to a Division 2 matchup here in Charlotte on Friday, they were playing Richmond. It wasn't bad and 2k actually showed up which I thought was pretty good for 2 levels below MLS.

And of course, just as it seemed like City were coming to the end of a good season, the word on the City fansites is that Sven is leaving tomorrow.

Still, it wouldn't be City if we didn't f__k it up for ourselves all the time. And that famous phrase again rings out

"TYPICAL CITY"

If a City fan fell into a bucket of tits he'd come out sucking his thumb. We're bleeding cursed. Be just our luck to have them red bastards scrape through on penalties against Barca then win the league through an offside goal in the 8th minute of Fergie Added Time.

Both Barca and ManU rested key players over the weekend in their respective leagues which backfired on them (especially the Reds). Look forward to their CL encounter tomorrow.

Couldn't give a shite about either of them - vastly overrated, adored by gloryhunters and despised by real football fans, the pair of them.

Seen games in the Nou Camp, and there's more atmosphere on the surface of the moon. The only reason there was noise at OT was because it was their little local rivals come to see them, who then proceeded to wreck their 50th plane crash anniversary and giving them a 2-1 doing.

Ideal result ?

Explosion of a 1KT nuclear device on the pitch about 8pm, wind East to SE, as I'm not really keen on getting the fallout.

I was dying when it was 1-0 Leicester after only 10 minutes. I can't figure out if Laws is a shite manager or doing the best with the resources we have, but he certainly makes things interesting. Have to win on Sunday.

Sven going pretty much confirmed now.

So much for the f**king three year plan. We'd have taken finishing 10th at the start of the season.

It appears as though our Thai fuhrer has decided that he wants 'galactico' style signings (hence Ronaldinho-type rumours) not Sven's ideas of people you've not heard of before who can actually play.

Mm, so maybe we can have a think about how many trophies Real Madrid won while following the same policy...err, not very many at all.

City - we exist so that other fans can feel superior about how pathetically their own clubs are run.

Seems remarkably stupid to fire Sven right now.

But hey, at least your star player isn't being extorted by transvestite hookers.

Same old City....."ooo, things look to be going OK, let's make a f**king pig's ear of it"

If we'd won on Saturday, we'd have been one point behind Aston Villa who've also spent shitloads, and yet the spectacularly overrated Martin O'Neill has been mentioned in some places as Manager of the Season.

Partly wonder if whether we'd reversed our halves of the season (shite first half, good second), then we wouldn't be where we are now.

Current talk is of 'Big Phil' Scolari - don't want him, he's had more clubs than Tiger Woods.

Our Thai overlord is going to have to come up with a really big name, and one who is willing to ignore the fact that challenging for a Euro place til the end of the season is no longer good enough for Man City (christ, can't believe I've just typed that..).

I'm placing snipers outside COMS with pictures of the following people..

- Sam Allardyce
- Steve McLaren
- Jose Mourinho (though putting him up against Fergie in a Manchester derby would be a proper riot)
- Peter Reid
- Phil Scolari

Your owner is going to turn into Dan Synder (owner of the Redskins). NFL fans will now what I'm talking about.

All of Chelsea's decent players were either youth players or signed by Ranieri (with the possible exception of Ballack, who was an Abramovich idea). Mourinho is a self-promoting gobshite who worked hard to make Chelsea as hated as Man U, and came close to succeeding even amongst City fans.

I'd agree with you if he hadn't of had success in Portugal. He's a good manager even if he is a headcase.

It'll be an all English affair in the ECL. Barcelona just lacked ideas as to how to penetrate that sea of Reds shirts, as they simply sat back once Scholes scored in the first half. Messi didn't have a partner to dance with, Eto'o should have been substituted much earlier, Toure was invisible, this should be the curtain call for coach Rijkaard.

City sack their manager and the scum of the earth reach the Chumps League final.

It's a f**king good job handguns are difficult to get hold of over here.

Mmm, yes because obviously Chelsea have such a good family reputation.

The Russian firms will be really gearing up for this - 2 different lots of English supporters on their turf. I reckon that the authorities are going to want to be getting all of them in and out of Moscow on the same day.

In their favour will be the fact that entry into Russia is still done via visa, so it won't be a case of just turning up in town and hoping to blag your way into the ground.

I hate both clubs and their odious glory hunting support, so am hoping for a meteor strike.

Chelsea have a family reputation because they've not been there before. At least that I can remember.
